Smart idea, look how happy he is.

What do you get the dictator who already has an evil glowing orb?

[–] Fredselfish@sh.itjust.works 24 points 1 month ago (2 children)
[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 46 points 1 month ago (1 children)

yes. I don't think the egypt foreign minister is the one in the Trump photo though

[–] LocalAreaMan@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago

That's his boss. General Sisi was Mubarak's second. He led a coup against the first democratically elected President and murdered him in jail. Egypt receives almost as much military aid as Israel, all to suppress their own people as an extension of the Israel occupation.

A good glowing orb. And then a neutral glowing orb.

[–] Monument@piefed.world 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I got mine at IKEA!

I put a multicolor led bulb in the orb. It’s pretty neat looking.

This would be funnier if Egypt was a democracy and not a horrifying dictatorship

[–] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 50 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Wait, when'd they become a dictatorship??

Edit: 2013?? How am I so far behind the times on this one?

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 28 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Mubarak had been dominating the county since the 1980s. The 2011 to 2013 period was a brief period of not-dictatorship

[–] snowydroopz@lemmy.world 31 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (12 children)

I'm an Egyptian, and 2011-13 was 110% a dictatorship. We've always been under one, just different people in different ways

"I'm gonna make SO many slaves build this!"

[–] nialv7@lemmy.world 51 points 1 month ago (10 children)

Pyramids weren't built by slaves

[–] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 83 points 1 month ago (5 children)

While its been scientifically proven that it was indeed aliens, I don't think anyone knows for certain that they weren't alien slaves.

[–] Slab_Bulkhead@lemmy.world 19 points 1 month ago (1 children)

*alien prisoners with jobs

[–] fonix232@fedia.io 29 points 1 month ago

And not the Trump way

[–] OttoVonNoob@lemmy.ca 37 points 1 month ago

Later that night he sat on the floor, in a onezy in front of his fireplace while his family, glowed in the enjoyment there young president had putting it together, until he fell asleep and his son carried him to bed.

But seriously love this

[–] LocalAreaMan@lemmy.world 29 points 1 month ago

Not when it's a despotic regime.

The elected President was murdered in jail by this stooge's boss.

[–] HotsauceHurricane@lemmy.world 27 points 1 month ago

Right. But there are no good people in these positions:

Abdelatty is not only foreign minister but also chairs Egypt’s Supreme Standing Committee for Human Rights. At Egypt’s UN human-rights review in January 2025, he portrayed Egypt as having made major progress and did not acknowledge abuses. Human Rights Watch contrasted this with documented arbitrary detention of peaceful critics, torture, enforced disappearance, serious prison abuses and unfair mass trials and executions. Calling this record major progress while omitting those abuses can reasonably be characterized as whitewashing the government's conduct.

There is also a longer history. When Abdelatty was Foreign Ministry spokesman in 2013–2015, during the crackdown after Mohamed Morsi's removal, he publicly denied that authorities were conducting a political crackdown, saying there were "no exceptional measures" against political groups. He also defended Egypt against international criticism over the prosecution of Al Jazeera journalists and rejected European criticism of those trials. Those statements came during a period when journalists, opposition figures and protesters were being arrested in large numbers.
