Technically, when installing a fitgirl rip, it is doing an extraction only, just with some extra UI elements and other features like installing dependencies.

[–] RiQuY@lemmy.zip 24 points 1 month ago (4 children)

With the added complexity that it can fail for reasons I don't comprehed. If it was just extracting that wouldn't fail under any circumstances.

The lovecraftian installer

"Would you like to wake from its slumber the ancient daemon once known by the name of DirectX 9? (recommended)"

[–] DdCno1@beehaw.org 10 points 1 month ago

The only times it has failed on me was because either the storage device or RAM were faulty. It's definitely worth it to check both for errors every once in a while, as financially devastating as it is to replace either.

[–] CyberTerry@leminal.space 1 points 1 month ago

It's your RAM bro

[–] KuraiWolfGaming@pawb.social 1 points 1 month ago

Never had a fitgirl install fail. Make sure your download was complete and not corrupted or missing required files. And make sure you have enough RAM not including swap. Some of these games use pretty heavy compression that uses a whole lot of RAM. And it seems swap sometimes causes the decompression to fail. Not sure why though.

why does it require admin rights to run, then? right at startup, and if you try to run it with a tool that fakes admin rights, it will crash (unlike other installers it can successfully make run)

[–] Sonotsugipaa@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

They need admin privileges to write to directories such as C:/Program Files, if I had to guess - I didn't need privileges when installing Halo: Combatevolved Butworse on Linux

[–] WhyJiffie@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

but I always installed them on my other drive where it did not need such privileges. it works on linux because here everything runs as admin (in the wine world, it's not admin in the linux world)

[–] Sonotsugipaa@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's not that Wine runs things as an administrator, Wine emulates the Windows virtual filesystem by creating and using a directory in your home (by default), which means you own the entire thing;

with Windows, if you have a separate drive and *you* create a folder in it, even if you call it "Program Files", it's going to let you access it freely because it's yours.
However, the existing Program Files folder in your OS drive (C: by default, idk if you can change its volume letter) is owned by... I have no idea, actually, but it's a system account, not yours.

The last paragraph may be inaccurate, I was much less tech literate when I was still daily-driving Windows.

yes, it is that

Wine emulates the Windows virtual filesystem by creating and using a directory in your home (by default), which means you own the entire thing;

I was always installing fitgirl games to my other drive, where I owned the entire thing. I know because I remember I set the ownership.

However, the existing Program Files folder in your OS drive (C: by default, idk if you can change its volume letter) is owned by... I have no idea, actually, but it's a system account, not yours.

The last paragraph may be inaccurate, I was much less

I have never installed fitgirl games there.

[–] Sonotsugipaa@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'll trust you on the Windows side of things, but you ought to explain how Wine is running things with admin privileges

[–] katze@lemmy.4d2.org 4 points 1 month ago

You are misunderstanding him. Wine has not implemented any UAC dialogue like windows; when the application requests it, it just gets "elevated" as if the user had pressed that UAC button under windows; but Wine does this automatically, as there is no need for something like that.

As stated in comment 50, applications requiring unelevated privileges can be run directly, without the need for "runas" or any similar manual intervention.

I wish every game was like that AND the game saves were always in the directory.

I want to download, play, backup after I’m done without needing to manage all the save locations.

[–] katze@lemmy.4d2.org 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That can easily accomplished by running each game in its own WINEPREFIX.

[–] notSys@lemmy.cafe 4 points 1 month ago

Wait. This is genious! Why haven't I thought of it?

[–] RheumatoidArthritis@mander.xyz 11 points 1 month ago

Explanation of the last panel?

[–] AceSLS@ani.social 4 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Lol, where is "download from steam, hit play"?

[–] ooli3@sopuli.xyz 54 points 1 month ago (4 children)

it would have a few step more: go to work, work for 5 h, get your minimum wage 60$, enter you credit card info, pay steam

[–] stringere@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Hahahahhaha $12 minimum wage, you're a riot.

[–] winkerjadams@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Can't tell if you're joking or not. US federal minimum is still $7.25 but places like California and Connecticut have higher minimums in the $16+

[–] ooli3@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

plus they are other country than US, each with different minimum wage. I ballparked it.

the point being: whatever you buy, you sacrificied a lot of time for it (some more than other, obviously)

[–] stringere@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago

My state voted for and passed a minimum wage raise, which would continue incrementally for the next few years, and paid sick time ballot initiative. The state legislature repealed the sick leave and removed the minimum wage increases from the future. Yay democracy. Cunts.

[–] tene@leminal.space 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

unless you know who this guy is and what he is talking about: SLSsteam

[–] notSys@lemmy.cafe 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

How to use SLS steam for piracy? It doesn't look like a piracy tool

[–] tene@leminal.space 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

try looking for Midrags/SFF and Deadboy666/h3adcr-b

[–] notSys@lemmy.cafe 1 points 1 month ago

I've already done my research, thanks.

[–] AceSLS@ani.social 4 points 1 month ago

Who said you have to pay? 🤣

[–] MrScottyTay@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago

All the other ones would need that too for buying the hardware you're playing on

[–] tene@leminal.space 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

username checks out, keep up the good work 🏴‍☠️

[–] AceSLS@ani.social 3 points 1 month ago

Will do, thank you :)

[–] WhyJiffie@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

denuvo won't run on operating systems that don't try to fuck you over, and makes the game slower on windows

[–] jonathan@piefed.social 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)
[–] p03locke@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 1 month ago

I wouldn't pollute my Linux OS with that shit.
