Seeing as I eat both, is fine

plant-based mock-meats

Why make plants taste like meat?

[–] AnimalsDream@slrpnk.net 1 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

That's the joke dude.

But also it's for the noobs. Nonvegans will continuously conjure up every excuse possible to keep supporting cruelty, to the point that we now evidently have to make special science meats that people will also probably try to make excuses to avoid.

[–] VictoriaAScharleau@lemmy.world 1 points 40 minutes ago

no one supports cruelty

[–] percent@infosec.pub 1 points 7 hours ago

Oh. Good joke.

[–] ZILtoid1991@lemmy.world 5 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

This reminds me of a controversy among the carnivore diet community, where someone got smeared as a "vegan" for seasoning his meat, and really liking chili peppers.

[–] AnimalsDream@slrpnk.net 10 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Imagine how warped your mind has to be, to find spices and plants controversial.

[–] ZILtoid1991@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

"But look at these AI generated fat people eating chips, which is made out of potatoes, therefore it's vegan!" - many of the carnivore diet grifters

[–] titanicx@lemmy.zip 2 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

I don't think you have to find an AI picture of a fat person eating chips.

[–] ZILtoid1991@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

Because carnivore grifters are right wingers, and the right loves AI slop. The carnivore grift is not for health, but a political movement.

If you like meat so much, why do you eat plants and/or seasoning from the get to?

[–] mycodesucks@lemmy.world 14 points 22 hours ago (4 children)

Regardless of your take on the ethics of meat, this argument is nonsensical from either side.

Mixtures of things have different effects than their component parts.

It's like saying if the hot chocolate just tastes like the cocoa powder, why don't I just eat the cocoa powder?

Because the texture and nature of the water give it a property too.

For the British: the things shown in the picture are spices. You add them to food to make it have taste.

[–] danielfm123@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 day ago (2 children)

My wife add flavor at to meat, I like it just with salt.

[–] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 day ago

Why are you so obsessed with how rocks taste, just east the food

Vegetarians and vegans just hate plants more than they love animals.

It’s the mineral eaters you really need to keep your eye on.

[–] r1veRRR@feddit.org 3 points 16 hours ago

Umm, akshually, since animals eat so many plants, eating meat is the far more effective move for plant haters.

[–] AnimalsDream@slrpnk.net 10 points 1 day ago

Clearly you are making this argument in seriousness and good faith, so excuse me while I spend a couple of nights and more paragraphs than anyone will read to fully articulate my carefully crafted rebuttal.

On the opposite side, why do vegans spend so much time and energy trying to make replacements of meat products? Not protein, but vegan sausages, vegan bacon, vegan eggs, that sort of thing. They're trying to replace the very thing they gave up with something that looks and tastes like the very thing they gave up.

[–] Zwrt@lemmy.sdf.org 10 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

I am not vegan yet but if i could get the same identical culinary experience as meat minus the horrors of the animal holocaust industry. I will become vegan in a heartbeat.

I know vegans who dont hide that they do really miss meat. I imagine even those that don’t would appreciate having alternatives that turn more people away from the real thing.

[–] DarthFrodo@lemmy.world 2 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

I don't miss meat anymore because for many categories, alternatives have gotten good enough that eating them instead of real meat isn't really a sacrifice for me, just a different version and maybe a brief period of getting used to it. I'm quite content with vegan chicken stuff and burgers and sausages for example, if the product is well made. Even some cheaper ones have improved a lot. Guess I'm lucky that I never was much into steaks and cheese.

The thing I do miss is being able to go into any restaurant without worrying if they even have vegan options. This might be a big reason why people don't go vegan. But trying to eat plant-based if practical while making some exceptions would already be awesome. Even just asking for vegan options if there are none would help a lot if enough people did it.

I know vegans who dont hide that they do really miss meat. I imagine even those that don’t would appreciate having alternatives that turn more people away from the real thing.

After 10 years I'm not sure anymore if I'll eat cell culture meat, because eating real meat is just kinda strange/disgusting to me by now. But I'd be really happy if it became available for the people who do want to eat real meat.

[–] finallymadeanaccount@lemmy.world 2 points 22 hours ago

It was a serious question. Thank you for providing a serious answer.

[–] Killercat103@slrpnk.net 5 points 1 day ago

Generally the same reason people like to video games to emulate real life even if they do not want the games to be real

[–] Stolas@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Before I took up veganism, someone asked me about my feelings on it once.

And this was pretty much my response. I'm not really that attached to food in general regardless.

My answer wasn't satisfactory though, because later they complained that I needed expressively enjoy the alternatives we ate.

[–] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 4 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

It's like asking an atheist if they enjoy Christmas without the Christ stuff — I mean sometimes? Most of it isn't Christian, you've just come to associate them.

Like yes, I still enjoy salt, fat, and sweet smoky flavours even if they're not from warming body parts of dubious provenance in my kitchen? I'm quite happy to leave that part out, thanks!

[Some kind of body of Christ pun.]

[–] Stolas@lemmy.ca 2 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah basically.

I always knew that it was the flavoring I enjoyed, which came from the spices. Not judging anyone that does miss meat or other animal products, but for the most part I'm rather unbothered.

And obviously I believe in the cause, I'm not just doing it because I can.

[–] AnimalsDream@slrpnk.net 2 points 9 hours ago

To be honest meat, even the smell of it, has become very unpleasant to me these days. It all smells putrefied to me.

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's crazy how many people got hurt by a meme in shitpost community.

Good job OP!

Been making home made seitan the past couple weeks and it’s so good.

[–] AnimalsDream@slrpnk.net 1 points 23 hours ago

This is the way.

[–] TransNeko@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

remember folks. if you don't put any herbs and seasonings on your food... there is a 100% chance you are British, stupid, or more likely both. British food should be renamed "Bland shit that gets served in a dying home" (dying home = those shitty retirement homes where people go to die alone with a meal plan that makes USA public school food look like $100k plate 5 star food cooked by the best chefs in the world)

I don't even BUY meat anymore! I'm a real man! A MAN'S MAN! I find animals in the wild and I chase them until thtye die of exhaustion and I eat it RAW! I have to get shots and medication to fight off prions and parasites like every other week BUT THIS IS HOW MEN DID IT IN MEN'S DAYS! I neither rely on the big production of meat or eating "plants" like some yuppie ass hipster!

THIS IS HOW MEN SHOULD BE! WE ARE HUNTERS or something, I dunno.
