Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

EDIT: She's a holocaust denier, which I didn't know. Guess she is a nazi after all!

Here's the link (from Political views of J. K. Rowling):

She is very much a TERF, an acephobe, kinda racist (just look at her character names), and therefore quite a horrible person; ~~but, while it wouldn't surprise me if she was, she is not a nazi.~~

[–] QueenHawlSera@piefed.social 45 points 2 days ago (23 children)

She is however a holocaust denier

[–] nickiwest@lemmy.world 19 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Source?

I have seen zero credible sources for this specific claim of Holocaust denial. The closest I've found is that she argued that trans people weren't the first group targeted by the Nazis. (Not denying that they were targeted. Just disputing that they were first.) That's not the same as "Holocaust denial."

I already know she's a bad person who uses her celebrity to spread hate and spends her time and money trying to further oppress some of the most marginalized people in the world. We can dislike her for those very real reasons without spreading false stories about her.

[–] arudesalad@piefed.ca 8 points 2 days ago

She didn't argue that trans people weren't the first group targeted, she argured that trans people weren't targeted at all/it doesn't matter that they were (however you want to read into the tweet linked in the article).

jk rowling is definitely the type of person who will argue the holocaust didn't exist with george takei, who was literally in concentration camps during ww2.

[–] SalmiakDragon@feddit.nu 10 points 2 days ago

I'm not following the logic here. I mean, he was in American concentration camps - not sure how that's relevant to claims about what the Nazis did. I know he's right, but it's not like he was there or anything.

[–] TheRealKuni@piefed.social 14 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Okay but, let’s be fair, not knowing the Nazis burned books on trans healthcare and research is not the same as denying the holocaust.

I’m not saying she hasn’t denied the holocaust. I’m just saying this isn’t an example of that.

[–] tutter@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

Shes denying part of the holocaust. Whether that be from ignorance or otherwise idk and idc. Denying part of the holocaust is definitionally holocaust denial. Thats litterally the defining trait of the word

There's also a difference between not knowing something and implying that something is a lie (and sending that implication out to her millions of Twitter followers).

I don't see anything about holocaust denial in your link. There's a 2018 article discussing parallels between her work and the real holocaust but it doesn't claim she's a denier. I don't really care for Rowling but I also don't like misinformation. If there is some evidence can you please share it?

Imagine being so blinded by bigotry that you think that transgender people, of all the fucking groups, were the one group that nazis were totally cool with.

[–] uniquethrowagay@feddit.org 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I think she just doesn't believe trans identity is a real thing and that it wasn't yet "invented" in the 1930s.
Not knowing what the fuck they're talking about is kind of a staple of transphobes.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

In her defense for some reason there just aren't many records of us in 1940s Germany /s

In case anyone's unaware, that famous photo of nazis burning books, yeah those are records of trans people among other texts on queer sexology

[–] lemdeggity@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Thanks for the source although I think that's quite specific. It seems mostly about her being ignorant and doubling down on her war against trans people rather than a blanket denial of the holocaust which the term "holocaust denier" conjures

Your article frames it this way:

While Rowling has not denied the Holocaust itself happened, she is accused of engaging in a form of Holocaust denial for questioning the persecution of trans people under the Nazi regime, a fact which has been well documented

I'm not denying she's a cunt but I think it's important to be precise with these sorts of allegations.

[–] Estiar@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 days ago

I think that's a pretty accurate assessment. I personally haven't seen any evidence that she's anti-Semitic and that is the center of Holocaust denialism. I don't think her claims aren't driven by conspiracy theories. She just has a million Yes Men who encourage her anti-trans positions and it just feels right to her

Acephobe??? I was unaware. Good to know I'm hated double.

[–] hopesfall@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Honestly, calling everyone a nazi just feeds into the right's narrative of "oh they call everyone a nazi, ignore them".

I'm not defending anyone, especially not J.K. Rowling, but this isn't helping our cause, quite the contrary actually.

[–] tazeycrazy@feddit.uk 1 points 1 day ago

It's a bit like Kleenex and velcro. They lose there trademark the more people that get groups with Naziism. Unfortunately no one is protecting the nazi brand.

I get the joke, but You can get from anything to Hitler 4 clicks. Every article has a country > history > WW2 > Hitler.

[–] skisnow@lemmy.ca 42 points 2 days ago

Nah, that's irrelevant. OP didn't get to Naziism via some broad category like that, they got there directly through JKR

[–] Rothe@piefed.social 39 points 2 days ago

But not 3 clicks.

Anything (Jay Z song) > Jay Z > Kanye West > Nazism

[–] TherapyGary@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Lmao I thought you were guessing/joking until I checked

Wow, I didn't know about either, Wikipedia speedruns or JKR's Holocaust denialism. Thanks, OP.

[–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 17 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I wasn't aware other countries played 5 clicks to Hitler as well.

[–] Manalith@midwest.social 6 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Not sure where you're at but I do this frequently. Also do an IMDb pick an actor and a movie and see how quickly you can get that movie by navigating cast lists and credits I.e Will Smith > Ad Astra

Will Smith > Men in Black > Tommy Lee Jones > Ad Astra. That's a simple one, but you get the idea.

Isn't this just a twist on "degrees of Kevin Bacon"?
