Republicans this year quietly cut millions of dollars of funding for the late and beloved Dolly Parton's children's book charity, according to multiple reports. Imagination Library, the nonprofit founded by Parton that sends free books to children across the world, faces an uncertain future in Indiana and Missouri as Republican lawmakers limit public funding, Newsweekreported Wednesday.

What is wrong with these fuckers.

[–] MehBlah@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

They are free to be so you can never be.

[–] MithranArkanere@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Have you seen the show "Happy!" before it was mysteriously cancelled due to "poor performance"? The villains' scheme in that show is likely what happened, except that the only imaginary friend in the real-life version is god.

[–] TargaryenTKE@lemmy.world 20 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Okay so after reading the article, the funds had already been taken away prior to her recent passing. The headline however makes it sound like they were vultures who didn't even wait for her body to be cold before they came in and denied millions of dollars to school children. Don't get me wrong, I'm still upset that the money is gone from a good cause, but this kind of misleading wording just keeps chipping away at whatever faith I still have in the media

[–] Squirrelknight@lemmy.world 17 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I mean, it's not like they aren't still taking it away. They praise her and her charity only to take all they can away from it while nobody's looking.

Why do the Republicans hate their own people so much?

[–] Reasonable_Guy@lemmy.world 149 points 2 days ago (3 children)

In this case, if they learn reading comprehension and critical thinking at an early age then they won't be Republicans when they're old enough to vote

[–] SGGeorwell@lemmy.world 38 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

That’s precisely it. The Gross Old Pedophiles jealously guard their imbecile supporters and cultivate their ignorance like a cash crop.

Yeah, I was republican until I was, um, 19? And that's because I grew up in a cult where the word liberal is a sin but my parents and grandparents themselves are cool. Like literally I went to a city council meeting in a town the cult controlled and the town engineer gave estimates. He explained that they were for the most traffic the proposed intersection would get, but they were going to call them finger quotes conservative estimates so they would think they were good estimates. And did that kind of sophistic bullshit all night.

You'd think that would have gotten me out of the cult, but see there was this woman.

nine years later and that, kids, is how I met your cousin!

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

not that many years, but yeah

we were at college and she had been dating my roommate's little brother. he had recently left on one of those mission trips and i had recently met her. we clicked, i asked her on a date, then i asked her name to put her number in my phone. and she and my mother share a maiden name. so we decided on a friend date where we figure out our "Bacon numbers" from each other and the stories of how our families diverged. we were at a large religish college so I'm sure this scene was being played out daily, we needed that icelandic incest app.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

dueling banjos intensifies 😁

you make me realize i need to include these anecdotes on the liner notes to my albums in that portion of my book.

[–] Alexfire@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

It's true, and sadly most people stay in the low-level, high-control systems they are indoctrinated into. The foundations are unhealthy, to not question, not be curious and want to understand the fascinating world around them, just do the same things we always did, and repeat the unhealthy dysfunctional ways. They get job, hardly make enough to pay bills, disillusioned, have a child they think will make them feel better and needed, etc. repeat.

[–] mushroommunk@lemmy.today 58 points 2 days ago

Educated people statistically vote more in line with the left, not the right. They love the poorly educated

[–] stickyprimer@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

The republicans don’t have people. They are a party of vampires and grifters riding redneck America like a pony into their own personal payday sunset.

[–] HazardousBanjo@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Because its not "their" people. Its the people they want to enslave because they view them as genetically and intellectually inferior, because they're too emotionally immature to accept the reality that the opposite is true.

[–] hoppeduponcoffee@lemmy.zip 15 points 2 days ago

An uneducated populace is easier to indoctrinate with fascist propaganda.

[–] ZombieMantis@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Every Republican alive is an affront to God.

[–] Mulligrubs@lemmy.world -2 points 1 day ago

... and every Democrat.

Remember, if you sit at the table with Nazis, you're a Nazi

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 59 points 2 days ago (1 children)

If I were a Dem candidate going against a MAGA that voted down Dolly's books, I'd mention it in every ad.

[–] tigermountain@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago (2 children)

There is a shitload more democrats could be doing to counter Trump. One of them is prebunking, and I don't see one fucking democrat doing it. It's a psychological technique where someone informs an audience beforehand about manipulative rhetorical techniques their opponent might use. It lessens the impacts of those techniques. With Trump this would be like shooting fish in a barrel. Come on fucking democrats! I'm pissed.

[–] 17jGuFCOn89iY@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

They’re controlled opposition

[–] hoppeduponcoffee@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Probably because a lot of establishment Dems are receiving handouts from AIPAC and the same corporations as their GOP “enemies.”

[–] AlecSadler@lemmy.dbzer0.com 36 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Republicans, all of them, are trash. There is no good Republican. They are the enemy of anything good and should be treated as such.

[–] DaveyRocket@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

They all bow down to someone found guilty of raping E. Jean Carroll. They’re gremlins who worship a monster: throw them all in the pit and light it.

[–] Mulligrubs@lemmy.world -2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Their tag-team partners, the Democrats, are no better.

All Democrats (30% of voters) and Republicans (30% of voters) should be deported to Somalia and Haiti. Load them up by the thousands on cruise ships, you know, make it a fancy goodbye party, don't be mean.

Then, finally, the Independents (40% of voters) can live in peace and harmony.

[–] FordBeeblebrox@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

At some point, while lighting books on fire, you’d think SOMEONE would look around and say “are we the baddies?”

Yes, say their comrades, and have fun with it. The cruelty is the point. As Dolly would say, oh bless their hearts

[–] possumparty@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

They brag about being the baddies.

[–] el_twitto@lemmy.zip 19 points 2 days ago

Fuck every goddamned republican. May they rot in hell.

[–] tonytins@pawb.social 57 points 2 days ago (2 children)

How long have they been waiting to pull that damn trigger?

[–] santa@sh.itjust.works 15 points 2 days ago

I mean. They have no spines, otherwise they would’ve done it well before.

They are a virus.

They haven't been waiting at all, they've just gotten away with doing it secretly until now

[–] ShellMonkey@piefed.socdojo.com 49 points 2 days ago

Only way that Rs think of the children is when they're trafficked in for playthings...

[–] JeeBaiChow@lemmy.world 26 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Wtf? So the flag lowering is entirely performative? Figures.

This happened like last year. It's just being brought up again because of Dolly's passing.

[–] mrmisses@lemmy.world 22 points 2 days ago

Yup it's already been cancelled in my state, got a letter a few months ago. Fuck all republicans, they are complete shit

[–] mechoman444@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago

Jeez... It is amazing how I can learn about a new low these people can reach.

It's books for children.
