If not decentralized, it's a no go...

[–] qaz@lemmy.world 2 points 36 minutes ago* (last edited 33 minutes ago)

The site looks vibe coded. It's possible they just bought the trademark, quickly set up a site and hope to capitalize on the reputation of former Twitter.
The $20 and $40 early access certainly makes it seem like it. Even if that isn't the case, time has shown that centralized social media has flaws so idealists will just stay with Mastodon while the people that want a large user base and easy of use will just use BlueSky instead. IMO there is no market aside from a possible gofundme-invention type exit scam.

[–] Mwa@thelemmy.club 3 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

Finally Twitter's name and logo isn't a ripoff of the X Windowing System(maybe)

[–] kamen@lemmy.world 7 points 10 hours ago

Paid early access? I think I'll pass...

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 1 points 8 hours ago

I still call elon's BBS twitter (on purpose).

[–] lookitsjustin@lemmy.ca 25 points 20 hours ago

If nothing else we know this project will piss off Elon and that's always a plus.

[–] percent@infosec.pub 16 points 20 hours ago

Ah yes, just what the world needs: another Twitter.

[–] Gsus4@mander.xyz 11 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

hahaha, this is the first thing I though after the idiot changed the iconic name to nothing, go twitter! (no, I'm not joining bluebird, but I like the trust threshold idea)

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 51 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Yeah i'il keep using mastodon and bluesky, also, they already have investors so it's dead at birth for me

[–] 7101334@lemmy.world 64 points 1 day ago (5 children)

Bluesky is also owned by a corporation and, like Twitter, could sell to a fascist billionaire whenever they find it profitable to do so.

X vs Bluesky is a great microcosm of American team-sports politics. Mastodon is something actually new.

[–] Regrettable_incident@lemmy.world 9 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

Yeah but ppl are on bluesky

[–] mEEGal@lemmy.world 9 points 21 hours ago

who needs people when you can talk to leftist nerds ?

[–] fyzzlefry@retrolemmy.com 3 points 17 hours ago

Have you met people?

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 10 points 1 day ago (6 children)

Yeah that's true but perfect is the enemy of good, Mastodon isn't gaining much traction so my hope is that at least we can get a federated protocol, whatever it is

[–] 7101334@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (5 children)

Perfect is the enemy of good, but so is the desire for convenience.

Mastodon gains less traction because it doesn't have an advertising budget, unlike Bluesky. Because Bluesky is owned by a corporation.

Is Bluesky federated? I thought it wasn't. Tumblr also said they were going to, but then just... didn't.

[–] LodeMike@lemmy.today 4 points 23 hours ago

Bluesky is federated if you have $10,000,000

also, they already have investors so it’s dead at birth for me

Launching with the immediate intent for profit screams either a scam (Especially with Musk being kind to give up the name, massive red flag).

Twitter was awful before Musk bought it. Hard pass.

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 31 points 1 day ago (4 children)

And I'm going to keep dead naming X as Twitter until Musk stops dead naming his daughter. I never used the site in the first place, but that's besides the point.

[–] PhoenixDog@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

And I’m going to keep dead naming X as Twitter until Musk stops dead naming his daughter.

I'll dead name Twitter long after Musk stops dead naming his daughter, or he himself is dead. X is a stupid fucking name.

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

We both know Musk is never going to stop dead naming his daughter, so same difference.

[–] AliOski@feddit.nl 1 points 17 hours ago

ngl, who cares? I've never seen somebody going rabid over calling it Twitter.

Yeah. "Lets try centralized algorithmic corporate social media again."

Im sure this attempt will end up just as wholesome.

[–] Scrollone@feddit.it 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Also, with a website that's clearly designed by AI.

What could go wrong

  • Cash grab on an old name and hoping people pony up the $20 to join it.
  • Not using ActivityPub or ATProto.

Yeah, it's already DOA.

If anyone is serious about creating a new centralised social network these days, they have already lost.

[–] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 2 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

and the sign up doesn't even work, just 404s

[–] crakila@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago

Oh lol. It must have been because their firebase tokens were exposed and people were able to get around the waitlist/payment and sign up for an account.

Take a look: https://x.com/Patrosi73/status/2093079851393524087 (I would link to Xcancel/Nitter... but space karen decided to wig out)

Imo reviving Twitter as paid ai slop is just making a mockery of it.

[–] brsrklf@jlai.lu 1 points 11 hours ago

Twitter deserves the mockery. And this attempt too.

[–] datavoid@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 day ago

Imo twitter was always a joke

So, I'm just checking..

  1. It is not open source?
  2. It uses AI to "Fact-Check"?
  3. It costs 20$ to join, and possibly more later?

Well, they have chosen interesting path those people behind this thing.

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 31 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This will never amount to more than a cash grab.

Yeah. Not falling for that.

[–] N0t_5ure@lemmy.world 362 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Lol. It'd be hilarious if this succeeded. It was so dumb of Musk to change the name.

[–] BewareOfIdiot@nord.pub 1 points 10 hours ago

Why? You don't find it convenient to say "X, formerly Twitter"? I think it just rolls off the tongue! /s

[–] muusemuuse@sh.itjust.works 199 points 1 day ago (25 children)

Most of what musk does is dumb.

I hope this takes off and people start using "tweet" and "twitter" again and it makes "x" completely irrelevant like his Hitler salute should have

Edit: it cost $20 to join?! I'm out

[–] Ganbat@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 17 hours ago

it cost $20 to join?! I'm out

Yep, I can't spend the money now, which is probably true for a lot of people, and I'm definitely gonna forget this is a thing by the time it's free or I have the money, which is probably true for a lot of people.
