Ugh, my work mandated doing an "AI training" course too that everyone needs to do until October 31st. Luckily I'm leaving the company at the end of September so I can just ignore the deadline.
The worst part about these sorts of training courses, in my experience, they don't even teach anything. Its just a bunch of buzzward jargon trying to sell you on the topic.
Opinions on AI aside, I don't need to be pitched on using AI, (or many other topics) as training. Give me actual training. "Do X, see what happened? Now try Y, see how its different, these are why they are different/better/worse than Z, these are ways you would use X, Y, or Z."
That's why there is the *does anybody have a question" part of the training. It'll be especial fun when you start asking about the legal liability for AI output.
"Ooh, sorry, my religious beliefs prohibit me from using AI models as they have been made using stolen intellectual property, and I am not able to participate in theft."

I'm required to use AI at work, so I skip training and have claude burn tokens on a summary of the transcript which I won't read. Sometimes job requirements handle each other.
You are doing it wrong, you need to get Claude to summarise the summary until you get down to one sentence, peak efficiency
Now I want to try dking this.
"Summarize this in 500 words or less" -> "Whats the Cliffnotes 100 word version of this." -> "Whats the quick bullet point version of this." -> "Whats a good single word to summarise this bullet point."

As a student, I feel this so hard. My school canceled every Master's-level class section with less than 15 students and now I'm stuck in 3 16-week AI/ML-centric classes. I suppose I'll at least be well prepared to sit through useless mandatory trainings once I enter the workforce, if I can find a job. I'd say I'm more than ready to graduate so I can be rid of this AI bullshit but I think I really just want to move somewhere remote and become a hermit.

I know right?? I actually feel cheated because I was promised something the school failed to offer to me. They had me write a review of the program this past semester and I was not particularly kind.
At least learning resources for my actual areas of interest are generally freely available to learn on my own time... and an MS looks good on a resume...
I'm actually considering work in the public sector at this point so I can have a work/life balance and actual benefits. Used to be the private sector had better long-term career prospects, but tbh I'd rather take the pay cut and escape the corporate dehumanization.
The FOSS community has been a great outlet for my actual interests because I can use what I know to help people instead of feeding into the technocratic slop machine. It's also been helpful in finding areas where I'd enjoy specializing.

You'd think so, but they're SO much more boring than that. I've now taken the "how to not write your password on a sticky note" training yearly since 2002.
I tell coworkers "They don't make us take ladder training because they don't think we can climb a ladder, they make us take ladder training so if we fall off a ladder, a lawyer can ask if we were following the ladder training."
Don't write your password down. Don't use a password safe. Your password can't have any words in it, it must be 16 characters with half of them non alphanumeric. And stop forgetting your passwords
Don't forget the "stop forgetting your passwords" is accompanies by "password must be changed every 90 days" and "passwords cannot be similar to previously used passwords."
I made myself a password generator where you input how long the password needs to be, + other requirements (length, number, special characters (there's an input box for which ones are allowed) then it subtracts the number / special character from the total required length, chooses a random combo of 3-7 letter words that will make exactly the required length, then adds back in a random number and special character and capitalizes one of the words. Probably not as safe as a completely random password but waaay easier to remember. Would probably be way better even from someone who knows how to actually code because I know juuust enough to vibe code something small like this for personal use the only programming language I actually know is turtle so I understand the basic logic but not like. Syntax or anything.
That advice was actually relevant in 2002. Now it's a more secure method.
I was just told today that ai usage is a factor in hiring and promotion. They didn't say the AI usage had to be smart.
My boss, to his credit, reportedly said something like "well, if someone is already good at python they might not need as much AI to do a task than someone who isn't". I don't think management cared.
Before I got laid off, I was told by my manager of the company I was contracted to that people higher than him were wondering why I hadn't installed the copilot extension in vscode; he strongly recommended I do so. So I did install it. I then proceeded to immediately set the ignored file types to "*" (which, for those who might not know, is shorthand for "everything".) I didn't hear anything about it afterwards.
Feeling this - I've been unwillingly tapped because I'm "knowledgeable" about AI after I did a presentation a while ago that was literally about the downsides of it...

We use Copilot to make memes that we share on Teams. What else are we gonna do with it? It's useless for anything remotely productive.
Copilot is useless. I've yet to take less time explaining what I want from it than it would take to do it myself. Very big, one off repetitive tasks -you know, the exact type you want to quickly automate- are never properly understood or executed, and smaller ones need so much refinement that it's not worth the time. Productivity gain < 0
I am ignoring the "required" ai training notices until the absolute end. Which could be sooner than we think!
