I’m just surprised he could afford the airfare.

A community for discussing events around the World
Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF OCTOBER 19 2025
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

Luckily the vector mosquitos can't survive in Europe's climate long term... yet.
Malaria used to be in the entire roman empire. It has a big proem in Spain until they fixed the problem of stagnant water.
So europe has had the climate for a loooong time. The swamps are the real problem
A Frankfurt Airport worker has died of malaria after a rare outbreak led to six employees contracting the serious infection spread by mosquitoes. The Robert Koch Institute - a German federal government agency and research institute for disease control and public health - said malaria in Germany almost exclusively affects long-haul travellers who were infected in malaria-endemic areas, and that malaria transmitted within a German airport is rare. "The lack of a travel history can lead to a delayed diagnosis. A delayed diagnosis increases the risk of a severe course of the diseases," the institute said. The last case of airport malaria was in 2023 also at Frankfurt Airport, it added.
6 workers getting infected from one plane seems pretty remarkable. Does that mean multiple mosquitos were on it, or just one that bit them all? I suppose they or it could have travelled in the hold, assuming that remains pressurised for the flight.
Pretty sure most mosquitoes bite once, then lay eggs. Must have been multiple.
No, they bite multiple times, which is how the malaria parasite (plasmodium) gets transmitted from infected people. Their life cycle involves several weeks in a mosquito, so it's possible to get sick, get treated, recover, and be reinfected by descendants of the parasites you had.
My bad I didn't think about the transmission. I somehow silently assumed they'd bite, lay eggs, bite again, lay more eggs.
That's the default cycle but they will bite note than once if they don't get enough.
So where is this mosquito now? Deported? Still in Germany?
Hope that person's family is compensated. That's awful.
I cant wait until we eradicate mosquitoes from this planet. All they do is make life worse for everyone.
Some whiny bitch is going to come along and say "OH but they are vital to the ecosystem is some parts of the world" fuck you and anyone that thinks this. They are not vital to shit.
We have the technology, we can do it.
Actually, I think the main issue is the getting rid of them part. There's billions of them, they're small and they reproduce fast.
There are lots of species of mosquito, and yes, they are essential to the ecosystem. But very few species actually bite humans. Some studies have argued that not a lot would happen if you eliminated just those species.
Wr ave already eliminated them from smaller areas. We know how to do it, someone. Just needs to do it world wide. If I had the money I'd start doing it already. Wouldn't ask permission.
Then, you look at how we did that, and realise that you probably don't want to do that again.
You mean by releasing genetically modified mosquitoes to get them to mate with the native population and producing sterile offspring and killing them all within one generation? No im definitely down with them doing that again. All over the world.
No, we did it by dropping tons and tons of DDT all over the place.
Yah, i do remember something about that dumb ass way. We have done it the other way more recently. Remember it back in university.
The new way is not as efficient unfortunately. But it's way way less destructive.
You got my vote!
It's also not true. Plenty of environmental impact studies have been done showing that eradicating the specific species of mosquito responsible wouldn't make a difference. Other species of insects would fill the gap
you dont understand eco systems mister.
Fuck yourself, thanks :)
I cant wait until we eradicate mosquitoes from this planet
Mosquitoes are integral parts of all ecosystems they live in, those would collapse if they somehow disappeared overnight.
