Don’t loan your friend money.

Give it to them and never expect it back.

That old saying about loaning a friend money means you’ll probably lose the money and the friend both is pretty true.

So don't part with money, got it!

[–] kolmaskommentoija@sopuli.xyz 20 points 1 week ago

This one, indeed. Never loan an amount of money, you are not wiling to give away, in that situation.

Wouldn't the answer be "for what?" I'll help a friend out with medical payments or car stuff if they can't commute no problem - if they're asking me for cash for something dumb, I'm probably not friends with them in the first place.

[–] LastYearsIrritant@sopuli.xyz 17 points 1 week ago (2 children)

My best friend? Gets the cash no questions asked.

If I needed additional follow ups, then he's not really my best friend.

2k though? That's not a small chunk of change. That would wipe out a lot of people's savings. In the example it's nuking half your savings. What if your car blows up tomorrow and the dishwasher breaks?

[–] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I can only answer for myself, but in that case then we're going to figure something out. It would be a shitty situation, but not one that can't be overcome with the power of friendship!

(Which sounds like a joke but nah really that's how that would work out)

[–] howrar@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

That's the point of having savings. You could just as easily ask yourself what you would do if you spent 2k on car repairs and suddenly your friend urgently needs financial assistance the next day. If you need to spend that money, then you spend it. If you can't, then you deal with the consequences.

Those sound like American problems.

I have solid savings, don’t need a car, and can wash dishes just fine.

[–] then_three_more@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

I'll not a yank.

... You know there are places other than the US, right? It seems like a really unhealthy mindset to assume everything you can't personally relate to must therefore automatically be about America.

[–] outerspace@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago

This is something a friend would say

[–] frank@sopuli.xyz 10 points 1 week ago

I definitely called a friend once while traveling abroad when ALL my shit got stolen and was like "yo, I need money" and after some story telling for identity verification he just sent me a grand (which went a long way in S(?)E Asia).

I obviously paid him back when I got home but it fully saved my ass. What a guy

[–] sundray@lemmus.org 7 points 1 week ago

If my friend needed 2k like, tonight, I'm assuming it's ransom and that we're mobbing out.

[–] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

My bff and I don't loan cash for any purpose, as previous bad experiences have tainted trying to help people with cash. And I'm gay so no gf.

$4k and a clear conscious. Ez pz.

[–] kkj@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 week ago

What do I have? A best friend and a girl! I'm hoping she's a girlfriend and not a daughter, because I can't afford the latter.

[–] khanh@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago

this xavier mf was the OG content farm

[–] whereitsat@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

it doesn't say what the people need the money for.

if both of them need the cash to pay the IRS delinquent taxes i'd say the girlfriend takes precedence if you're in a committed relationship. if the bro needs the money for a righteous cause and the girl needs the money for consumerism, then the bro wins out.

that's a bad punchline that's against community spirit. you don't have to be a communist to help people in need, and lack of empathy/compassion should be discouraged in a healthy society. jesus fucking christ.
