OK I'm confused. Please tell me the USA are NOT claiming it as their territory?

... erm, actually please tell me are the US claiming the Strait of Hormuz as their territory or not?

edit: cheesus. Thanks for clarifying. I just can't take this unperson's direct quotes anymore.

He's been talking about it for a week or so and eventually posted an image of a map declaring the Strait of Hormuz a “new U.S. territory” on Tuesday...

Trump has already said it.

Everything is American territory. We claim our own land, to an infinite height and depth at all angles. So, the universe.

Lot of territory. Explains the pentagon's budget

[–] Abyssian@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Oh, God no. That's almost all just embezzlement. Getting mocked repeatedly by Iran and not being able to do anything about it other than bluster and blow up innocent kids in school sort of points out how little of the US "war" budget goes to actual expenses.

Yeah, thats why I up voted you instead of screaming that you're a bigot and should die or something like Lemmy folk do when they get sad.

We live in harsh times, people are at their limit and lashing out. I try to be understanding about stuff like that. But it does happen more than I'd like.

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

haha, I've had that happen when I've missed something stupid he's said…

Being a territory doesn't give birthright citizenship though....

So even if the US were able to just claim it as a territory, that wouldn't mean anything for citizenship. The Constitution only applies to incorporated territories. The only incorporated US territory is the uninhabited Palmyra Atoll. PR, The US Virgin Islands, Guam, etc are all unincorporated territories. The Constitution doesn't apply to them.

The US territories that do have citizenship at birth are done so under federal law passed by Congress, not the 14th amendment. For example, people born in American Samoa are NOT US citizens. They are non-citizen US nationals. People born in PR, Guam, and the US Virgin Islands are citizens due to federal statutes passed.
