Moneris Machines (piefed.ca)
submitted 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) by dudesss@piefed.ca to c/buycanadian@lemmy.ca

Now that Moneris sold to USA, which sells machines you use to pay via Debit, how do you plan on paying in-store?

Are you guys planning on using cash? How do you hell do you manage so much cash? Card is just so much easier. Especially when its comes to cents.

Cash isn't that hard.

People have been using cash for a helluva lot longer that they have been using cards.

And having some cash on me has been very handy when the card machines are down (which has happened a few times a year at one store or another)

I used to get paid in cash, paid rent in cash, and made major purchases with cash. The whole point of having a bank account is so that you don't need to carry all your cash. Now that money is digital banks are just value extractors.

Like that one national outage couple years back.

Like the server failure at my grocery store last month.

And like the communications cable cut at my local gas station a few months before.

It happens far more often than you might think.

How the hell do you manage so much cash?

With an elegant weapon from a more civilized age.

FANNY pack.

Depends on what you consider a fanny I guess.

Guess what fanny means in the UK

I have a wallet, it contains around 38 bills atm. Yes i occasionally use cash, it's great when network problems occur. What are people going to do in a disaster, natural or otherwise? Maybe you live in a country where it's best the man doesn't know who you are or what you are purchasing? Cash is useful.

38 bills?!? I'd be so scared of losing my wallet.

Easy. Cash comes with its own buil-in savings account called "change". It's what's left over after you pay. Put it into a jar when you get home. Instant savings account.

It's just like those debit machines that ask you to round up your purchase, but instead of "donating" to a charity you probably dont care about, you donate to your own pocket.

After some time, take the jar to the bank to exchange for paper bills and get more cash.

Big merchants like the oligopolists I have no qualms using credit card.

Small shops I very frequently offer to pay in cash. I have a conventional wallet where my bills are and a buttoned pouch on the inside for the coins.

I avoid having too many coins by doing mental math. If the total is 47.05 and I have 2.05 in change, I'll pay 52.05 to get a fiver in change.
