Isn't "artisan" supposed to mean "made by an artisan" and not "mass produced trash"?

[–] daggermoon@piefed.world 49 points 5 days ago (4 children)

Imagine having a cult-like devotion to a brand. It's pretty fucking pathetic.

[–] zebidiah@lemmy.ca 18 points 5 days ago (1 children)

And then imagine that brand is fucking razor...

[–] Sylvartas@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 4 days ago

Hey you were 14 once. I was a sucker for their aesthetics at that age. Still think some of their stuff looks cool but it's usually too expensive. But their more affordable mice haven't really let me down yet so I might buy the next one from them again, if the current one doesn't let me down too fast

[–] JeeBaiChow@lemmy.world 25 points 5 days ago

Apple, anyone?

[–] mursejoy@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 days ago

I’ve always thought the Apple V Google or Xbox V PlayStation thing was pretty pathetic.

Always just makes me think of the South Park with console wars.

[–] TheReanuKeeves@lemmy.world 7 points 5 days ago (1 children)

The marketing term is "Brand Loyal". But in layman's terms "Fucking Idiots".

[–] daggermoon@piefed.world 6 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Brands usually make products of varying quality.

[–] TheReanuKeeves@lemmy.world 7 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Stop it, you're hurting the fanboys out there

Doggy or missionary?

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 2 points 4 days ago

Nowadays most brands are just making garbage and riding on their name selling it to morons that don't think critically about their purchases or people who buy their shit out of desperation because all the other brands are also making garbage and theirs seems like the least bad option.

I've owned two razor mice, they both had the scrollwheel break within a year. I left the cult of razer then.

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 6 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Same, although more than just the scroll wheel broke. And I think I was on three in a row breaking within a year before I gave up. It's a shame because feature-wise I like some of their stuff, but it's just impossible to buy products with this level of QC.

[–] TheReanuKeeves@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago (2 children)

I've used logitech g502s for about 10 years now and the only time I've had issues was when I accidentally knocked it off my desk. I'm not a fanboy but logitech makes some good quality stuff for relatively decent prices

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 2 points 4 days ago

I have two 602s that I've had forever. Unfortunately both are having issues with the switches failing so I'm going to have to figure out something. I replaced the one for the left mouse button in one of them but the ones I bought are so stiff that if you don't click it exactly right button just flexes, so that's annoying.

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I also switched to Logitech, to a G604 though. Six thumb buttons is perfect for me.

[–] TheReanuKeeves@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)
[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

No, not in a long time. I just find it's very nice to have, you can do actions without lifting your fingers off WASD. Or use the PC one handed in some cases and have a coffee.

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Yeah, people really sleep on the programmable keys. Even just for web browsing it's nice to be able to do extra stuff with one button press.

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 2 points 4 days ago

I could literally not live without them anymore. It's great even for browsing/desktop use with some extra common actions, and pretty much every single game plays smoother with a few thumb-bound hotkeys.

[–] BreakerSwitch@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago

Had the same issue with their controllers. Got one, was busted on arrival. Got replacement, was busted within a week. I've never had such a bad experience

[–] SlothMama@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

Yes this, the scroll wheel breaking is driving me insane. I'm thinking I'll not buy anymore mice from them now because it's happened to every single one

[–] Sylvartas@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 4 days ago

It's really hit or miss with the mice. All of mine lasted several years or more but I know some models are pretty bad. I had a copperhead that lasted a while, then a naga "green" that didn't last very long but I could probably fix (I think the PCB inside came off its fixations and then some soldering broke) but to be fair it did travel across the Atlantic ocean and back. My current naga with the magnetic panels has been going strong for some years.

Their gamepads are junk though, a good old 360 controller feels better and lasts infinitely longer. I've also owned a few pairs of kraken headsets which were comfortable but overpriced and not durable enough. Then again the other gaming brands aren't fairing much better on that front (I currently have a corsair virtuoso I got as a gift, it's ok but the planned obsolescence ear pads are driving me nuts). The keyboards look like they're gamer status symbols more than anything else, just like the laptops. I got a cheapo mechanical keyboard from some random brand and it feels better than the 200€+ razer keyboards I've tried.

The green poop emoji?

[–] PieMePlenty@lemmy.world 12 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

I dont particularly like Razer, but if there's anything they do well, its marketing. They're right.. if they're able to sell a key cap for 90 bucks, their marketing must have been so good in the past they created a literal materialistic cult.

This obviously isn't for me, its for their cult members. I hope one day, they can exit the public peripheral market and sell exclusively to their cult members at 1000% markup.

[–] moonburster@lemmy.world 14 points 5 days ago

I wouldn't pay it, but that is the price you'd normally pay for custom keycaps on Etsy as well. Quite often for lower quality too

[–] myotheraccount@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

I read the last part as "oil of snakes" at first, and that fits so muc better

[–] dreadbeef@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

this is for richer middle and high school kids to get to show status, and I guess any adult who is still attached to marketing aimed at teenagers

[–] iocase@lemmy.zip 6 points 4 days ago

Considering the majority of Americans can barely read at the 4th grade level

Gestures vaguely in all directions

[–] tal@lemmy.today 10 points 5 days ago (2 children)

$90, which makes it one of the most expensive keycaps I think I've ever covered on this site.

Gold Greenman - 14K Solid Gold with Genuine Emerald Gemstone Eyes / Keycap Worthy of Royalty 585 Golden / Artefact for Mechanical Keyboard

$4,837.37

[–] glasratz@feddit.org 1 points 2 days ago

For that price, it has a really, really bad surface. You can see the marks of the rotating tools.

[–] eyelevel@lemmy.world 14 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

Wealth inequality makes me so sad sometimes.

Like I don't have any objection to people wanting to have good experiences in life, or sometimes buy some quality item that they might really like. But then I see shit like this $5000 keycap or a $15000 action figure or some other ridiculously overpriced dumb thing and I think whoever is buying this is probably just bored. They probably just have more money than they know what to do with, and maybe they think that automatically more expensive means better, and so they just throw their money away on these hollow objects.

And obviously $5000 isn't going to solve homelessness or end world hunger, but if you are in the position to throw $5000 away on some dumb decoration that literally not even one other person will ever look at or care about, then you probably do have the resources that you could be doing something else with that money if you wanted to.

But instead, it seems that basically all of us are caught in an endless cycle of vapid consumerism, and while most of us are trying to survive, a bunch of other people just don't really care, and meanwhile the world is literally burning down around us.

[–] Sylvartas@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

It doesn't even look good. I understand throwing 5 grands at a really nice piece of craftsmanship made with expensive materials but at this price it better look amazing

[–] glasratz@feddit.org 1 points 2 days ago

Yeah, when you look at it, it's not very good craftsmanship. You can see the traces of the rotating tools. Since it doesn't look bad overall, that's a sign of someone not really putting a lot of effort in it. The creator could, but didn't really want to.

[–] tal@lemmy.today 8 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Most of those artsy keycaps that I've seen go do their blingy design and then encase the whole thing in clear plastic shaped like a regular key so that it doesn't have a weird shape.

Example:

https://www.keychron.com/collections/artisan-keycaps/products/magic-animal-resin-artisan-keycap

[–] DeadDigger@lemmy.zip 1 points 4 days ago

Eh that depends a lot especially not frequently used keys like esc are off the roof in shapes F1-12 following after. Only if it is a key intended to be used somewhere else it is in the very profile

[–] DrSleepless@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago

Suckers gonna suck

[–] caut_R@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Their marketing dept. - if they have one - has to be insane

[–] Sylvartas@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 4 days ago

The CEO was doing the heavy lifting through his socials, when I was still following them. It really is kind of a cult

[–] THE_GR8_MIKE@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

The Razer Blackwidow Ultimate 2013 I got new is still working fine. Hell, Synapse just started working again for me after like 8 years. I kind of wanted a V4 Pro but the 2013 keeps kicking, so why bother. I'm beginning to wonder if their newer keyboards also live up to the same standards or if I just got lucky in some small window of time. 2009-2012 was a fun time to be building a computer.
