Lefty Memes

7282 readers
77 users here now

An international (English speaking) socialist Lemmy community free of "ML" (read: Dengist) influence. This is a place for undogmatic shitposting and memes from a progressive, anti-capitalist and truly anti-imperialist perspective, regardless of specific ideology.

Serious posts, news, discussion and agitprop/stuff that's better fit for a poster than a meme go in c/Socialism.

If you are new to socialism, you can ask questions and find resources over on c/Socialism101.

Please don't forget to help keep this community clean by reporting rule violations, updooting good contributions and downdooting those of low quality!

Rules

Version without spoilers

0. Only post socialist memes

That refers to funny image macros and means that generally videos and screenshots are not allowed. Exceptions include explicitly humorous and short videos, as well as (social media) screenshots depicting a funny situation, joke, or joke picture relating to socialist movements, theory, societal issues, or political opponents. Examples would be the classic case of humorous Tumblr or Twitter posts/threads. (and no, agitprop text does not count as a meme. Please post agitprop here)

0.5 [Provisional Rule] Try to use alt text or image descriptions to allow for greater accessibility

(Please take a look at our wiki page for the guidelines on how to actually write alternative text!)

We encourage alternative text (from now referred to as "alt text") to be added to all posts/comments containing media, such as images, animated GIFs, videos, audio files, and custom emojis.
EDIT: For files you share in the comments, a simple summary should be enough if they’re too complex.

We are committed to social equity and to reducing barriers of entry, including (digital) communication and culture. It takes each of us only a few moments to make a whole world of content (more) accessible to a bunch of folks.

When alt text is absent, a reminder will be issued. If you don't add the missing alt text within 48 hours, the post will be removed. No hard feelings.

0.5.1 Style tip about abbreviations and short forms

When writing stuff like "lol" and "iirc", it's a good idea to try and replace those with their all caps counterpart

  • ofc => OFC
  • af = AF
  • ok => OK
  • lol => LOL
  • bc => BC
  • bs => BS
  • iirc => IIRC
  • cia => CIA
  • nato => Nato (you don't spell it when talking, right?)
  • usa => USA
  • prc => PRC
  • etc.

Why? Because otherwise (AFAIK), screen readers will try to read them out as actually words instead of spelling them

1. Socialist Unity in the form of mutual respect and good faith interactions is enforced here

Try to keep an open mind, other schools of thought may offer points of view and analyses you haven't considered yet. Also: This is not a place for the Idealism vs. Materialism or rather Anarchism vs. Marxism debate(s), for that please visit c/AnarchismVsMarxism.

2. Anti-Imperialism means recognizing capitalist states like Russia and China as such

That means condemning (their) imperialism, even if it is of the "anti-USA" flavor.

3. No liberalism, (right-wing) revisionism or reactionaries.

That includes so called: Social Democracy, Democratic Socialism, Dengism, Market Socialism, Patriotic Socialism, National Bolshevism, Anarcho-Capitalism etc. . Anti-Socialist people and content have no place here, as well as the variety of "Marxist"-"Leninists" (read: Dengists) (actual ML's are welcome as long as they agree to the rules and don't just copy paste/larp about stuff from a hundred years ago).

4. No Bigotry.

The only dangerous minority is the rich.

5. Don't demonize previous and current socialist experiments or (leading) individuals.

We must constructively learn from their mistakes, while acknowledging their achievements and recognizing when they have strayed away from socialist principles.

6. Don't irrationally idolize/glorify previous and current socialist experiments or (leading) individuals.

Notable achievements in all spheres of society were made by various socialist/people's/democratic republics around the world. Mistakes, however, were made as well: bureaucratic castes of parasitic elites - as well as reactionary cults of personality - were established, many things were mismanaged and prejudice and bigotry sometimes replaced internationalism and progressiveness.

  1. Absolutely no posts or comments meant to relativize(/apologize for), advocate, promote or defend:

This is absolutely praxis. This is directly denying the owning class from profiting off of the people and getting resources directly into their hands.

The only thing that could be better is raiding the stores and giving the food away for free.

while the profits are near-record levels, the companies say their profit margins are shrinking

The complete lack of self-awareness these companies have is astounding.

The Robin Hood Economy. If they don't pivot from Trickle Down to Trickle Up, we will spontaneously pivot to a Robin Hood Economy, and that often comes accompanied by things like guillotines.

This is denial of a broken system at this point. Luigi was right. Mortality is not something they feared could be used against them.

Luigi was with me. But whoever did it was def right. Edit: And after scrolling down a bit further... Goddamnit.

Oh no oooo I accidentally forgot to scan the most expensive item and still removed the tags oh noooooooooo

Ah, damn, I forgot to weight the item again so it's being sold at 0lbs, my bad.

Oh shit my dudes I accidentally returned an extra two items the customer didn't actually bring in.

What can I say, I'm a clumsy and forgetful cashier. (just not in the company's favor)

I’d say modern security programs would tag such a thing, but Fred Meyer got 200 hours of footage of someone I knew stealing before they made a move, so maybe they wouldn’t be that particular.

[–] whats_a_lemmy@midwest.social 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

That's probably just so the cops can pin heftier charges

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Walmart does that. They don't prosecute people for petty shoplifting, but they keep track. When the cumulative total hits felony level theft, they prosecute.

[–] webghost0101@sopuli.xyz 1 points 3 days ago

I think this is general for most stores.

It makes sense, considering the majority of petty crimes are for a lower value then the gas police would use to get on scene.

I do not get paid enough to care if I charge someone correctly/fully/at all. Even if I got paid more, I still wouldn’t care for that matter. The industry I work in has gotten so expensive for customers. It’s pathetic how corpo and hierarchical it’s become. Used to be really anti-establishment.

[–] raef@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Trying to imagine which industry both has customers and is/was ant-establishment

[–] Arkhive@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

I guess it wasn’t really an industry before per se, but it got over taken by a commercialized version of itself…

[–] Arkhive@piefed.blahaj.zone 5 points 3 days ago

Okay, okay, I’ll cave. It’s the rock climbing industry, so honestly not that far off hahaha!

The opposite of this is fun ways to mess with abusive customers.

Back when I worked font desk at a hotel, our ancient phone system had a "flaw" where if you transferred someone to an extension that didn't exist in the system, it would ring for 30 seconds then transfer the call back to the front.

If my usual attempts to diffuse the situation failed, usually because the person was actively looking to abuse someone, I'd say, "Please hold while I transfer you to someone who can help." Then send it to ext 1234 which didn't exist.

When the call inevitably routed back to me, I'd say, "I'm sorry, it looks like they didn't pick up, let me transfer you again," without giving them a chance to speak.

Rinse and repeat until they hung up.

I also helped out the nice customers by giving them a free microwave and mini fridge, since I was also the bellman who set those up. Usually it was $20 each, which is bullshit.

It is important to practice disobedience. Disobedience is a skill like any other, and it needs to be practiced. There will come a time in your life where your ethics will be tested. And in those cases that truly test a person's soul, doing the right thing almost always requires breaking the rules. If doing the right thing involves following the rules, then there isn't likely to be an ethical dilemma. Doing the right thing is easy when you're following the rules. There is no ethical dilemma involved in a police officer arresting someone for a murder they really committed against an innocent victim. The law and morality are on the same side. But sometimes doing the right thing requires violating the rules or the law. Teaching slaves to read was illegal. The rules of insurance companies require their workers to deny as many claims as possible. Countless soldiers have had to violate direct orders in order to do the right thing. Doing the right thing when faced with an ethical dilemma usually requires the violation of some sort of law or rule.

But again, disobedience is a skill. And it must be practiced. The easiest path will always be to simply go with the flow and follow the rule. Just do what you're told, regardless of morality. Often such decisions have to be made in a split second. If you're not practiced in disobedience, then your instinct will be to simply comply.

Thus it's important to practice disobedience. Find harmless ways to break minor rules, just to get in the practice of it. Retailer wants to make you wait in a long line to check your receipt for the goods you already paid for? Walk right out the door. Tell them "no thank you" when they ask to see your receipt. At the airport, decline to have your face scanned at the TSA checkpoint. You're entirely within your rights to do so, but they certainly make it so having your face scanned is the default option. And find little ways to help people, like this story here, even if it breaks the rules.

Then when you do face a true test of your character, you will already be practiced from years of minor disobedience.

Absolutely it is. And I want more of it.

Chaotic good. Approved.

This isn't really chaotic enough for my tastes.
