The current whack-a-mole spam user that I keep having to block due to spamming awful AI imagery in many places is Owbid Catob. Is there any way that admins of communities can block this person's IP addresses so that they have a harder time posting anything? I will keep blocking the new accounts as they pop up, but I'm getting so tired of this spammer.

Honestly it seems that they are exposing a pretty big vulnerability in the current lemmy setup. What's to stop someone from effectively DDOSing an instance by just posting a shitload of trash to a bunch of communities via a few dozen bot accounts? If this one guy can cause this much of an issue, I'd hate to see what would happen if some dipshit with a computer science background decided to take out a grudge. Not that that's happened at all recently.

That's a good point. These AI tools do make this nonsense more broadly available to folks who haven't a degree.

But also, two finger salute to that bastard Admiral Tesseract.

[–] chris@lemmy.grey.fail 24 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

While there's no real solution yet, please don't engage with him.

[–] apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world 11 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Agreed, just block the account and move on. But I was left wondering after today's outburst if this is a token generated hostile action.

[–] chris@lemmy.grey.fail 6 points 3 weeks ago

An interesting consideration, considering he doesn't seem to tire.

[–] Grimy@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Posts like these are what he craves.

Don't engage, don't comment, don't make threads about it, ignore.

[–] apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

I don't think it is a person.

[–] OriginEnergySux@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago

Im starting to think he actually wasnt a tv extra from ireland...

[–] fork@feddit.online 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Your must be new here. This happens a lot. Just block and ignore them and they'll eventually tire themselves out.

Mr. Four Month Old Account telling me I'm new here.

[–] fork@feddit.online 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

This is like my third account. I moved here when Reddit fucked their API up.

Calling people children is pathetic

[–] apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Commenting with an exceedingly narrow summary of it is even more pathetic. It wasn't ad hominem, and I apologize for not making that clear. People who live in the real world use that sort of talk as an endearing joke about naivety.

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Don't feed the troll. That includes posts like this.

[–] apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world 0 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (2 children)

As I said in the post, I don't see any evidence to suggest that it is a person/troll. Its specific behaviors and actions are so narrowly scoped that it seems to be an AI agent "programmed" for establishing the bounds of a DDoS test. The periods of very intense rates of account creation to post incoherent text with AI imagery to a narrow set of communities seems to indicate token driven hostile action. Some of the comments adding to the discussion rather than dismissing the post as "feeding the troll" have been helpful.

[–] VidyaPlayuh@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Bruh. I’ve seen his other social profiles. If this is an AI, then it’s fucked up whatever the hell it is

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Nevertheless, blocking and moving on is the only real solution for the general user. They're not worth wasting brain-space on.

[–] apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I agree with blocking, but discouraging discussion about topics that affect users is where I'll respectfully disagree with you.

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

You do you, bro, but I won't be engaging any further.

Except it'd have to be from every separate instance?
