"multiple ways to skin a cat"
Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !uspolitics@lemmy.world
7) No Hit-and-Run questions.
Please don't delete your post for no apparent reason. If you plan on deleting a question later, say so in the post, or if you feel that you have a good reason to remove it, message a mod beforehand. It's not fair to the ones who took their time to answer, and it's not in the spirit of the community.
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

Like a fart in a skillet.
American here. I live in a Northern urban area, and have never heard this. I wonder if it's regional or old or new. Looked it up, the internet says it's Appalachian, so, Eastern US. I might start using this now hahaha
Apparently, "like a fart in ..." is a common thing. There's this website that shows movie scenes with certain phrases: Playphrase.
Have a look at yourself: https://www.playphrase.me/#%2Fsearch%3Fq=like+a+fart+in&pos=0&language=en
I've come across two "like a fart in the church" one, which I did not really understand. I think it is used for unpleasant situations.
"Thank you for having me"
It's weird
Probably short for "thank you for having me over" or another word implied at the end.
"Thank you for having/picking/tolerating me as your guest"
Ain't no way I'm clicking that link...
As for cool phrases, my favourite is: "It's raining cats and dogs" (because it's funny if you imgane it, bit also macabre when you know th reason behind the phrase => back in the days the dead cats and dogs from allays would wash up on the main street when it was pouring down like crazy).
I didn't know the backstory of cats and dogs being so dark. Wth?
I was looking for a better open-source platform to upload the file. If you suggest any, I could do that. :)
You could use https://gitlab.com/timvisee/send, but honestly since there's no well known privacy-friendly platform (catbox.moe is great but only for images/video), it's bound to look sketchy
Wow I didn’t know that. Dark.
"half assed" was quite funny
Don't half ass it. Full ass it.
Me being Catalan, a culture with many poop related phrases and traditions, I'm pretty fond of "when shit hit the fan"
It's even funnier to imagine it happen lamo
It never stops to make me smile that most Germans cannot pronounce "squirrel" properly, while most native English speakers cannot pronounce the same word in German "Eichhörnchen".
Ike cough hyorn chin
How'd I do?
Despite the many advices from AI, that knot in your tongue won't help.
"When you mess with the bull, you get the horns."
These kids run through the house like shit through a goose.
Native English speaker, never heard this one.
Same, but that's hilarious
It's a West Texasism.
It definitely sounds both rural and southern
"Fleshed out" just means to explain & expand upon.
+1 for it's raining cats and dogs
But also
that's the way the cookie crumbles is just adorable
dinkin flicka just rolls off the tongue
bite the bullet is so raw and literal and
Bob's your uncle is just... No. Who the fuck is Bob 😂
If you didn't know, biting the bullet doesnt mean killing yourself. It comes from back in the day when soldiers would be given a bullet to bite down on while they got their leg amputated. Which is kind of even more gruesome
