if i remember it correctly the context was less on drinking per se but marketeers from Seagram complaining that people switched to vodka in the sixties and Seagram was specialized in brown liquor and saw their market share dwindle
I remember a line from some war movie that went something like, “The general prefers the soldiers to drink rum instead of vodka so he knows that they’re drunk and not stupid”. Rum smells awful.
