As it says in the title, he crawled out from under the house while I was out on my stoop, having a cigarette break. I knew I couldn’t just let him run around, and he couldn’t go back under there and get lost.

I’ve seen his mother go in and out of there from time to time, but I also know her as a neighborhood cat that would likely abandoned him. So I grabbed him up and took him in. I have tried to poke my head and this access hole and another one on the other side of the house and look around a bit to see if there were any other kittens, but I couldn’t see or hear any.

It’s probably only about four weeks old, so I’ve been feeding him some wet cat food, giving him water. I have a roommate that’s going to foster him.

We’ve named him Raindrop because it was raining out when he emerged from under the house. He’s extremely snuggly, chatty, and active! ❤️

I get it. What a dazzling little baby.

Why does every kitten have a vacant stare.

[–] islandcoda42@lemmy.zip 5 points 3 hours ago

He’s like “Claimed.” Little paw, yup that’s a keeper. Many adventurers to come!

Kitten: “heh heh heh heh”

Maybe check if there are more kittens? Such a beauty, I'm so happy for you with your new buddy :)

I checked as well as I could, but the under side of the house is pretty vast, and access options are pretty few. It’s been a few days now, and I’m by the access port several times a day, and I haven’t heard or seen another one since.

As I said, I hope it was the only one

I would also recommend to go to a vet so you can get the best food and care for him. Like anti worm pills, the right food for its age, vaccinations, and in the future a chip and castration.

Especially if it's 4 weeks old, it's too young to be away from its mother so it needs special care. There are also YouTube videos of people taking care of these young fur balls which can help you give him the right care.

You built your house on top of a kitten spawner??? Noooooo!!!!!

[–] Osprey@lemmy.world 6 points 6 hours ago

I think the spawners are placed after houses are built.

There are several neighborhood cats that come by the house. I’m pretty sure I’ve also seen the father running around. It doesn’t surprise me that the mother chose the underside of our house to give birth. I’ve also seen an opossum running in and out of there before. :(

I can only hope that the kitten we discovered was the only one.

You could try putting some treats near the opening of the crawl space and watch them a while to see if any others come for them. I wouldn't leave them overnight though since there are other critters in your area that might be attracted by it

[–] homes@piefed.world 1 points 2 hours ago

Yeah, that’s a no can-do. There are way too many other critters around that would be attracted to anything left outside, even for a few hours.

I generally support this practice, and when I lived in New York and had better transport options, I would do this when I had the opportunity. But I live in Florida right now, and don’t have a car. That makes it significantly more difficult for me.

I’ve seen a few cats running around the neighborhood with clipped ears, so I know it’s practiced around here by some people.

If I hadn’t been out there smoking, I wouldn’t have seen him.

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world 5 points 6 hours ago (2 children)

But if you quit smoking you'll be able to save other cats for years to come!

[–] TigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

It's always good to stop smoking, but telling smokers they should stop is not going to help anyone. Especially after the smoking part caused the discovery of this little fur ball, your argument isn't really strong to be honest. But yeah, smoking is bad for so many things etc. We all know.

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world 3 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Second-hand smoke isn’t good for the cats either.

[–] kn33@lemmy.world 3 points 3 hours ago

Going outside to smoke helps, which they seem to do

[–] homes@piefed.world 4 points 6 hours ago

I can do that already.
