What is enshittification?

The phenomenon of online platforms gradually degrading the quality of their services, often by promoting advertisements and sponsored content, in order to increase profits. (Cory Doctorow, 2022, extracted from Wikitionary) source

The lifecycle of Big Internet

We discuss how predatory big tech platforms live and die by luring people in and then decaying for profit.

Embrace, extend and extinguish

We also discuss how naturally open technologies like the Fediverse can be susceptible to corporate takeovers, rugpulls and subsequent enshittification.

Remember, some cars have essential systems looped through the 5g antenna. Check whether your car is one of them before clipping it with a pair of wire cutters, costing only $3.

What "essential" system could require a connection?

I know someone that removed the comms on their newer lexus, it knocked out the whole screen, radio and HVAC but only after a few weeks later. The touchscreen displayed something like it "could not authenticate to validate subscription" with no way to move past it. Had to take it to a dealership and get the telemetry reconnected and reprogrammed to get functioning again.

That's not essential. That's asshole design.

I hate this corny phrase. There is no such thing as ownership. It's just the state enforcing the arbitrary claims of the privileged with violence.

This slogan is just promoting the capitalism that's causing the problem.

Ownership is a very real thing that's different from property.

I hate this corny phrase. There is no such thing as violence. It's just the manipulation of objects that causes the molecules in an area to be disturbed in one particular way.

Man, Ford really doesn't want to sell any more cars, do they? I say let them have their "patent", and ensure that only Ford can do this kind of shit to their customers.

[–] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 5 points 2 months ago

Yeah, Ford was my last two cars and I won't again.

My next car will be a slate truck with no telemetry or something from 1995.

How the fuck can you payent like borrowing a car.

I'll patent borrowing umbrellas.

[–] LodeMike@lemmy.today 2 points 2 months ago

Thr U.S. patent office is terrible. They'll approve any bullshit as long as the forms are in order.

Just slap some tape over the sensors along the bumpers, side mirrors, and behind the rearview mirror. Best of luck to them getting it back to the repo-depot in one piece.
