You probably use AIs every once in a while, right?

Well what if I were to tell you that this means corporations will build more and more datacentres to satisfy the intense GPU and other computational requirements...

This is a problem

Massive problem

Why?

Because personal computing increased like 10x in price and I dont think its going to stop.

The end result?

No private affordable computing.

You might be able to rent a computer, but yeah

Solution?

Setting up an AI model is not that hard, in your owm hardware.

Other option would be just not to use AI. Let the corpos burn.

Though sadly general public will be the one bailing them out once the bubble bursts.

No, it's local models running on volunteer PCs

[–] alapakala@quokk.au -1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Those PCs aren't DC themselves?

So the computers hold no data, use no power, pass no communication, are trained on nothing?

[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

That's not the definition of a DC.

Read the definition you linked? Seems pretty accurate.

[–] alapakala@quokk.au 0 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Cool. Then your Horde is in decentralized DCs.

[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Sure mate, everyone has a "dc" at home...

[–] alapakala@quokk.au 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

you don't consider your battlestation a DC?

I would rather if we stopped producing new hardware altogether. There's already enough computer parts out there and the extraction of the necessary minerals hurts the environment.

[–] hoohoohoot@fedinsfw.app 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

The environment?

Really?

I heard about people working for like pennis and possibly even children, but I didnt hear anything related to the environment

[–] A404@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 4 days ago

Open pit mining, a widely used extraction method for minerals and ores, significantly impacts the environment through habitat destruction, soil erosion, and water pollution. The process involves removing large amounts of soil and rock to access deposits, leading to deforestation, loss of biodiversity, and disruption of ecosystems. Additionally, the exposure of sulfide minerals during mining can result in acid mine drainage, contaminating nearby water bodies with toxic heavy metals. Dust and particulate matter released during operations degrade air quality, while the substantial energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions contribute to climate change. Long-term effects include land degradation, altered landscapes, and challenges in rehabilitating mined areas, making open pit mining a critical environmental concern.

If thats your problem with it, maybe you should check your privilege. Seriously.

Little poetic text that highlights what I mean with other problems: Fairy Dust and Toxic Waste

[–] hoohoohoot@fedinsfw.app -4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Summarize.

No one has time for books worth of texts these days, ceetainly not me.

My point stands.

[–] punkisundead@slrpnk.net 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Lol ask your local LLM to summarize.

[–] hoohoohoot@fedinsfw.app 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I would

But

My servers were stolen

[–] A404@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

You can access AI without login on https://duck.ai/ It's even tor friendly

[–] hoohoohoot@fedinsfw.app 1 points 4 days ago

I know

But what does that have to do with the post?

Its AI and its not even self-hosted
