It's a known phenomenon called revenge bedtime procrastination

[–] HazardousBanjo@lemmy.world 49 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Ladies and gentlemen, the real cause of sleep deprivation in America.

[–] CyberTheProtogen@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago

This was why I got 6 hours of sleep per night near the end of the school year

[–] BipolarSilence@lemmy.cafe 29 points 1 day ago

Oh oh! I know this one! It's revenge bed time procrastination and it fuckin sucked when I was in highschool + working. The only way I got rid of it was by quitting lol

Fuck minimum wage

It's not a new day untill you sleep.

Endless scrolling has got your brain hooked on that content drip. Companies pay a lot of money to do this to you, serving ads along the way.

[–] Visstix@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago

Yeah... I somehow go to bed at normal times more often if I have a day off.

It's important self-care. Do it for your mental health!

[–] Shellofbiomatter@lemmus.org 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Begrudgingly i agree, i wish it wasn't like that, but sleep is important and shouldn't be neglected.

[–] lath@piefed.social 12 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Quality of sleep is also important and not decompressing before going to sleep will very much lower quality.

And drinking caffeine too late in the day. No caffeinated drinks should be consumed 6h up to half a day before going to bed.

Limiting caffeine only to morning has had significant impact to how deep my sleep is and over time, improved energy levels from better sleep have noticable reduced the need for coffee all together.

Though can you elaborate a little more on what does the decompressing point. Like how it's done?

[–] lath@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago

The coffee thing depends on the person. I know some ADHD sufferers who say drinking coffee before sleep has made it much more peaceful.

Same thing for decompression. It depends on the person finding something which works for them. For me, it's sudoku or crosswords. For others, it's having a drink with friends and venting about the day. Or letting the tv run in the background. Or having a small lamp projecting stars on the ceiling. A long, warm bath. A walk in the dark through open spaces. Cuddling. Having sex. Etc.

It changes every time, but the idea remains the same, to remove the imprint of the day and allow the mind to move on.

Also using a phone before trying to go to sleep degrades your ability and quality of sleep

[–] CyberTheProtogen@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago

I’d argue it’s a smaller effect than stress or anxiety will though. Can’t go to sleep when you’re edging a panic attack

[–] Saapas@piefed.zip 13 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Not great for mental health to be tired as fuck at work though

[–] lath@piefed.social 4 points 1 day ago

It would be were the rewards reflecting it.

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 1 points 1 day ago

eh, I'll snap out of it by the time I'm off.

[–] mfed1122@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It issssss but sitting on your phone scrolling tiktok or Instagram or in my case Lemmy doesn't really qualify. People should play a board game or read a book, or sketch with pencil and paper. Or if they're gonna be on the phone, screen off and on a voice only call with someone. I love screens but before bed its just a horrible idea, it feels waaaay better to sleep if you haven't been on a screen for at least an hour beforehand, speaking from experience.

[–] CyberTheProtogen@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You do make a fair argument. But at least in my case I have no one to play with, and with my ADHD reading is way too dang (idk if you can curse here) understimulating if I’m trying to get rid of anxiety in the most effective way (that will also probably make it worse in the long term)

[–] mfed1122@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh wow you're brand new to Lemmy! Yes you can say whatever the fuck you want here for better or for worse. I mean, depending on the community a mod might get upset. Welcome :)

And yeah that's true, it can be hard to be stimulated adequately with a lot of that stuff. Sometimes I like to listen to audiobooks, which I think can be more engrossing if you make it challenging for yourself by really trying to picture the changing scene like a movie. Other times I will 3D model structures in my mind or think about code or something like that. But I really recommend finding something to get off the screen, its so worth it.

[–] CyberTheProtogen@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

Oh thank you so much for the warm welcome!

Yeah, while I personally have a few bigger issues to solve, since I left Reddit I’ve been listening more to Legends of AVANTRIS podcasts and it’s a fun thing to listen along to. I’m currently listening to Icebound Ep6 and it gives me some much needed laughs.

Ironically, responding to this message it’s 11:45 right now for me, so I should probably get off lmao.

Once again thank you so much for your kindness and have an amazing morning/day/evening/night!

Me refusing to sleep because I'm addicted to my phone

This is why I wake up and go into work early. More sunlight after work for me.

[–] Azteh@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

The issue isn't sunlight but rather hours of the day. No matter how early or late you work, the hours don't change
