Everywhere is Ohio. There is no escape.
Eh, there's a lot of this in Ohio for sure, but as someone who lives here I think people forget how much nature there is too. I've worked in several environmental conservation jobs and there's a lot of truly beautiful places here.
Examples:
Mohican State Park
Gorman Nature Center
Strouds Run State Park
Hocking Hills State Park
Miami University Natural Areas
Even New Jersey has nature though. What people want are sustainable and walkable urban landscapes to live in, with protected natural landscapes nearby to visit. Being mostly empty space spotted with strip malls is not pleasant.
Imagine having to drive to an enclosed area where people specifically protect nature to experience nature...

It's gross but I think the stroad is still liminal space as it is between the origin and destination (defined places) for most of the people pictured.

It's been a problem since we starting arranging life for cars over life for humans, so probably all the way back to when gasoline was $0.24 a gallon...
