A community for Cartographers with nothing left to lose.

Rules:

Don’t be awful Lemmy Guidelines Still Apply.

We are agents of chaos I’ve created this to be the alternative to the community I used to manage on the website that shalt not be named “mapporncirclejerk”

Live and let die Meme trends happen, so please don’t message mods asking to take down maps that are repetitive to a bit.

Reposts Vs. Covers Not all reposts are evil- if someone posts something that has been done years ago, it serves to bring old memes to the new users. I call these meme covers. However it can be done in excess which makes it a repost and spam. Mods will determine if a post is a cover or a repost.

No impersonating mods I can’t believe I had to make this rule.

No harassing mods on an appeal We can talk it out, and we will be acting in good faith when making decisions. If you disagree with a removal, you are free to message for clarification or to appeal by giving some added context.

Bans Bans will be set to a maximum of 365 days for humans, and a minimum of 365 years for bots. I believe people can change, so if you are banned for good reason, do know that it is not permanent, it is just a way to say “take time to grow and come back when you are ready”.

Which, in a great piece of irony, no longer produces oranges.

It’s too far north and gets frosts, plus citrus greening has killed the Florida citrus crop. There are a whole lot of abandoned groves in Orange County, Florida.

Frankly, I’m not surprised that you can’t grow oranges in Orange County, Vermont.

What about orange cheddar?

[–] PyroNeurosis@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You cannot grow orange cheddar either.

Incredible that they chose to color the Orange County counties not orange, and every not Orange County county orange.

What's with all the specks in Virginia? Some weird Commonwealth bs?

[–] lividweasel@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

The Commonwealth of Virginia is divided into 95 counties, along with 38 independent cities that are considered county-equivalents for census purposes

In the Commonwealth of Virginia, all municipalities incorporated as "cities" have been "independent cities", also called "free cities", since 1871, when a revised state constitution took effect following the American Civil War and the creation of West Virginia.

Yep. There are 95 counties and 38 independent cities (the blobs).

[–] just2look@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They are independent cities. They are separate legal entities from the counties that surround them. Not sure why cities in VA do that though.

Outgrowth of the early colonial charter system that Virginia had and a few centuries of evolution from that point. In at least a few cases was a "great" way to maintain segregation, but many of the cities were independent well before that point and some actually ended up annexing the county they were initially independent from, leading to the weird situation in the southeastern tip where there are seven "cities", almost all of which are county-sized

And not a single one is named Blue County!
