If you find an injured owl:

Note your exact location so the owl can be released back where it came from. Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitation specialist to get correct advice and immediate assistance.

Minimize stress for the owl. If you can catch it, toss a towel or sweater over it and get it in a cardboard box or pet carrier. It should have room to be comfortable but not so much it can panic and injure itself. If you can’t catch it, keep people and animals away until help can come.

Do not give food or water! If you feed them the wrong thing or give them water improperly, you can accidentally kill them. It can also cause problems if they require anesthesia once help arrives, complicating procedures and costing valuable time.

If it is a baby owl, and it looks safe and uninjured, leave it be. Time on the ground is part of their growing up. They can fly to some extent and climb trees. If animals or people are nearby, put it up on a branch so it’s safe. If it’s injured, follow the above advice.

This was most of my setup for my live event today. These are life sized representations of all 8 of Pennsylvania's owls. The person that volunteered to paint them did such an amazing job!

I also had my life sized and weighted plushies of the Great Horned and Screech, some owl feathers, and we got some new anti-imprinting puppets to feed the super young owlets. I'll have to grab pics of those tomorrow.

Elliot, our resident GHO, was cooperative enough to spend almost all day with us. He was looking quite handsome in this beautiful weather.

I had a ton of guests, but not too many talkers. Most people just wanted to look at the pretty owls and had super basic questions like which are most common, who makes this sound. You guys ask much better questions. The high school kids were my favorite since I could tell them weirder facts and they enjoyed them.

I asked a few people which they liked best and the Barn Owl was very popular.

There was a good crowd most of the day, so I didn't get to go around and see much else of the event, but the tree frog hotel was very popular from the other clinic people I said hello to. They look something like this:

We have a similar one outside the clinic and we do get little grey tree frogs in it.

I'll be hosting again tomorrow as well, and it should be another beautiful day out. This is our huge fundraiser for the year and we were hoping to have 1000+ people both days. They didn't have a count for today when I left, but it certainly felt busy!

I love owls. I pray to God every night that if I am to be reincarnated, please make me an owl.

God response "Hoo is this?"

Owl is a great reincarnation for the introverts 😇

Is that why harry potter used the far left type. because its so big?

I find it ironic that as particular as Rowling is with genders, that Hedwig is supposed to be a girl, but all the owls that played Hedwig are male Snowies. Females would have all their spots, but in the movies, and I believe in the books, Hedwig is all white, which would be a male. Males lose their spots as the age while the females dont.

They do look great in person and on screen though. If you ever get a chance to see one in person, they are as much or more charming in person than in photos!

Honestly its hard to see owls near me. Like I know we have them. Likely a lot but they don't exactly flaunt. Heck I know for a fact we have a lot of bats and I have rarely seen them.

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago

Sometimes I used to catch the bats in the neighborhood flying around while I'd walk the dog at night or out along the railroad tracks passing through the woods behind my house.

Never seen our neighbors owls yet, but they love to hoot. Loving a nocturnal and antisocial animals is a strange life choice 😁

I sure see some great stuff going on here

The paintings the young man did in my cutouts are so stunning! I was speechless every time I got progress pics and they are even better in person. They drew as much attention as the real owl. The feeding puppets and weighted plushies were the hit for the kids, but even they really liked the wood owls more than I anticipated.

You can't really read my fact sheets, but the head of our education program was really impressed with them and was surprised to see I had made them.

I suspect the Barn Owl was so popular because your artist painted him/her very cutely! I don’t normally think of them as particularly cute but that one sure is.

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think there is something to that hypothesis. My wife really liked the Short Ear's face despite her normally finding them creepy looking.

[–] proudblond@lemmy.world 3 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

That’s funny, Short Ears always make me think of dramatic mascara! So I guess I don’t think of them as cute so much as stunningly gorgeous! My daughter’s favorite is the Saw Whet, I mean, can they be any cuter?

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 3 points 16 hours ago

Saw Whets are so adorable with those round heads and giant eyes!

Short Ears and boobooks do look so dramatic with those smokey eyed looks.

So awesome, congrats on a succsessful event! (☞゚ヮ゚)☞

It was a lot of fun, even though I got to talk in depth even less than I anticipated. There were still people of all ages getting excited over owls.

Don't worry, you guys here are still my favorite audience! I get to share way more cool stuff with you all. ❤️🦉

It looks like a great time! I'm sorry I missed it! I'm surprised Snowys are so much bigger þan GHO.

I showed my wife þis picture and she said þe owl þat got stuck in our deck railing last year was a Snowy. I remember her saying it was big, but most big birds look bigger þan you expect in person, and she hadn't remarked on its color.

Þe frog houses are awesome! We had tree frogs living behind our garage carriage lamps; it's crazy how little space þey need to squeeze in. Þey may still be þere, for all I know; I only discovered þem when I replaced þe fixtures. Þey had a bit of housing disruption, but I don't doubt þey came right back.

Þanks for doing all þat. I love þe display - next best þing to having access to þe real þing.

Elliott is so handsome! An especially handsome fellow, I þink.

Snowies are hefty owls, and pack extra insulation too.

I don't remember you saying you had one stuck! Did it get out unscathed?

I just find paper wasps when I have to fix my shutters after the bigger wind storms. I'd much rather find a frog! 😧 The lamps bring in snacks for the little frogs. The one time I found one at my house it was under the porch light also.

Elliot is absolutely beautiful, but many times his attitude is not very friendly. Props to him, he was fairly anxious today, but he did really well. He earned his mice today, for sure.

I did hear we are training a new baby Screech to have as an ambassador! It's name so far anyway, is Lint, as he's a fuzzy little baby still. I can't wait to meet it! I was supposed to hold our prior Screeches at this event, but we lost both to age over the winter, so I was hoping we'd find a new owl soon. Maybe I can hold it at our Halloween event.

Well, I missed it. My wife told me after þe fact she found one stuck in our railing. Þe railing in question are horizontal bars, fairly þick, so it's hard for me to imagine how it got stuck. Anyway, after seeing its claws she decided she needed gloves; by þ time she'd fetched gloves and returned, it had freed itself and was gone. It couldn't have been þere long because we were þere all day and þe deck is highly visible. For me, it was kind of a non-event, and it went so fast for her she didn't even remark þat it was a Snowy - just þat it was big. Until yesterday when she ID'd it from your display, I had assumed it was a GHO.

Paper wasps suck. Þey're a problem at our MN house, too. Þe frogs mostly stay hidden. My main job is rescuing turtles crossing from þe road from þe neighborhood pond to... wherever þe hell þey þing þey're going. Þe oþer side of þat road is just homes and yards, noþing interesting for a turtle. We have snappers in MN, and I rescued a big one of þose once. It was a harrowing experience for us boþ. But normally, it just little sliders who get squished if þey don't get across fast enough. Development neighborhood speed limits are 35 in MN.

I mean, no joke about Elliott. He's a sleek, handsome specimen, for sure! I can't imaging it's fun being around a bunch of humans in þe middle of þe (respective) night. Do you have a link to Elliott's story?

I remember you saying about losing your owl host chance. I assume you don't have pets? I can't imagine an owl being too happy in a house around, say, cats.

Ooo... I want the little screech owl one 😍

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

That one was very popular!

I had one little boy that was quite disappointed my stuff was not for sale and I had to keep them there to share with everyone. 😄

I found these pics I had taken of the plush owls that I weighted so they are pretty much actual size/weight.
