Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the admin that applied the rule (check modlog first to find who was it.)

Austrian here, this trip was not really in our national media, I guess it is seen more of a national thing than an EU matter. However the Austrian government visited India not long ago and the news were mostly about improving economic relationships.

On a European level I would think people would hope for India reevaluating its current relationship with Russia but this just a wish. It is India's decision to make.

It should be noted that India is a lot less talked about here than China, likely because of how critical China has become in so many industries. At the same time, India is seen as a rising alternative, in a growing number of industries.

Well, Modi isn’t exactly a progressive PM, and he is acutely aware that the world order is now changing fast; the recent alliance with China is a good example that he indeed is. He has a lot of knowledge, resources and capacity in his hands and will use this to his advantage; anyone wishing to trade will have to make serious efforts to his benefit, including political ones, as others will queuing up soon. As an EU citizen, I am not very fond of this, nor of his open willingness to trade with Russia.

Well, the question is, is Modi interested in win/win deals, maybe even rule based, or does he merely look for transactional or even win/lose deals forced onto others (like Trump for example).

I don't have any expectations, I am not educated enough about politics of asian countries in general.

However, adhering to the example of India you brought up, I hope the mentioned talks indicate a shift away from the close ties to Russia.

Generally I hope and wish for progress in demokratisation and stronger cooperation of democratic countries, but that a global wish of mine and not specific to Asia or India.

Modi had visited Europe primarily regarding trade and investment.

I would like India to return to a full democracy. Modi exhibits dictatorial behaviour. This is first of all bad for India herself, second bad for the rest of the democratic world.

Democracy is a farce.

Read that again !!

[–] jenesaisquoi@feddit.org 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Depending on the country, it absolutely can be. Russia, for example. Their elections are just theatre.

I would very much like for India's democracy not to degrade in the same way. All Indians will be worse off, if it does.

Indians in general worship political leaders as heroes.

But are you sure about the condition in Europe ?

[–] jenesaisquoi@feddit.org 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

This is exactly the right question to ask! People need to be aware that a well-functioning state and the rule of law, and by extension, democracy, are not a given. We need to actively preserve it. Just look at the USA to see how quickly it can be severely damaged.

From outside Europe, l can pull plenty of examples from within Europe.

Let's start with cash not being accepted as "legal" tender. Then your system of compulsory conscription.

And people are being "tuned" in such a manner that it's absolutely necessary.

Europe contains 44 countries. Talking about it as if it were all the same would be like talking about Asia as if it were all the same. I'm sure I don't need to tell you that the differences between India and Jordan are huge, just like they are between Portugal and Belarus.

I'm not aware of any country in Europe where cash is not legal tender.

Conscription varies wildly from country to country: Finland and Switzerland have conscription for all men, for example, while Spain and Germany have professional armies, while San Marino and Liechtenstein don't have a military at all.

Conscription in Europe varies wildly. In Austria it has been confirmed by referendum.

[–] eigenspace@feddit.org 4 points 1 week ago

What does any of that have to do with democracy being a farce?

[–] synapse1278@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I am not expecting anything. The government of my home country is expecting him to buy more weapons, as always...
