An unofficial chapter of the popular Dull Men's Club.

1. Relevant commentary on your own dull life. Posts should be about your own dull, lived experience. This is our most important rule. Direct questions, random thoughts, comment baiting, advice seeking, many uses of "discuss" rarely comply with this rule.

2. Original, Fresh, Meaningful Content.

3. Avoid repetitive topics.

4. This is not a search engine
Use a search engine, a tradesperson, Reddit, friends, a specialist Facebook group, apps, Wikipedia, an AI chat, a reverse image search etc. to answer simple questions or identify objects. Also see rule 1, “comment baiting”.

There are a number of content specific communities with subject matter experts who can help you.

Some other communities to consider before posting:

5. Keep it dull. If it puts us to sleep, it’s on the right track. Examples of likely not dull: jokes, gross stuff (including toes), politics, religion, royalty, illness or injury, killing things for fun, or promotional content. Feel free to post these elsewhere.

6. No hate speech, sexism, or bullying No sexism, hate speech, degrading or excessively foul language, or other harmful language. No othering or dehumanizing of anyone or negativity towards any gender identity.

7. Proofread before posting. Use good grammar and punctuation. Avoid useless phrases. Some examples: - starting a post with "So" - starting a post with pointless phrases, like "I hope this is allowed" or “this is my first post” Only share good quality, cropped images. Do not share screenshots of images; share the original image.

"I've been shaking my ass for hours but nobody joined in. Turns out I misheard you"

I sure hope that last gear does not have anywhere to be any time soon.

Something something… heat death of the universe.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago

Don't stop cranking it before you achieved a full turn on the last gear, or the world will come to an end! You started it, you have to finish it!

Now put the cordless drill on it

[–] Krudler@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I did.

The plastic on the crank spindle started melting lol

Dang. I did not say go full blast ;) do you have that video too ???

Imagine the speed if you had driven the red-dotted wheel ......

[–] Krudler@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

It could be turned by hand up to the gear with the green dot, then it became physically impossible by hand. I didn't dare try hooking up the drill because I thought the plastic gears would just explode

Already by the green dot gear, one turn of that was spinning the 1st gear about 500-1000 times

[–] redlemace@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Yeah, probably would explode. Only way might be to set it in motion from the green one and take it overt on the red one once the cogs picked up some speed. But most probably they will melt before that, the speed will be much to high.

But fun, thnx for sharing!

This is one of 8 computer pads that I use as crafting mats to protect my counter. I got them at Goodwill for $1

Is this the worlds weirdest excercise equipment or some other purpose or a 'hey look what I can make' thing

[–] Krudler@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It's an idea I came up with when I was 24 years old, so that's 27 years ago. I finally managed to salvage enough gears to make it happen.

I'm sure I'm not the only person to come up with this, it's not a particularly clever thing it's just neat to me.

[–] Hello_there@fedia.io 2 points 1 week ago

An extra idea: grab solar panel. Grab motor. Attach to bottom gear. Attach a big stick to last motor. See how long it takes for big arm to go all the way around

"What does it do?"

"Gears"

[–] Drekaridill@lemmy.wtf 2 points 1 week ago (2 children)

What's the ratio on this bad boy?

[–] heatofignition@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Looking at the diameters of the gears and eyeballing it, approximately 10,000:1

[–] Krudler@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

I'm actually not 100% sure because I made it all with salvage gears that I've gathered from years of electronics repair. A couple of them I had to glue two together to get the reduction.

I think there are four that are 11:44 (1:4) and four that are 22:44 (1:2)

4x4x4x4x2x2x2 = 4096 turns of the first wheel to make the final wheel turn once.

Again this is an approximation because it's all salvage, and I didn't really count teeth except a few times. Also I later attached to the handle and the offset gear there, and there's a teeth mismatch so I think that's like 62:50 or something oddball... I'm not counting that.

Screw the math. Count it.
