John Brown died too early.

It's better than it used to be. When I was in elementary school I heard the "War of Northern Aggression" as an alternative name. But by the time we were covering history in middle and high school no one called it that.

I think you'd maybe still find some teachers saying that in the most rural parts of the state, but it's definently lessened.

However, things are getting worse in other ways. Wouldn't be surprised if they start bringing back Jim Crow

Maybe it has lessened since 1965 or whatever, but I bet it's gotten worse since 2000

Except I was in school from about 2000 to 2020 (slightly increased range not to dox myself).

So yeah.

Do you live in the South or are you reliant on media depictions and lemmy?

I mean look at Georgia. The state flipped blue and voted for Biden. Abrams a black woman nearly became governor within 1%. I know it's not a win, but even coming that close was unthinkable for most of my life. Currently both Senators are democrats too. I never once thought that would be possible.

Of course with Trump 1 and 2 it's become worse and is definently sliding back. I definitely feel like the worse people have become emboldened and no longer fear repercussions (because there are none).

Growing up it felt 70% Republican 30% not. Now it's near 50/50 but it seems as that gap closes some things got better and other things got worse. I think it's Republicans clawing for power and willing to support the worst shit to make that possible.

In high school in North Carolina in 2007-2009, my textbooks had the War of Northern Aggression in them, but the one teacher I remember told us that that name was bullshit

Wow, it was never actually in our textbooks. How old were your books?

NC is pretty damn southern in a lot of ways. I'm always surprised by some of the stuff my friend (an NC native and current resident) tells me.

In junior year, brand new at the nice newly built charter school that had the first day start at 11am because the building crew was literally still there putting in last minute stuff, and a lot of it still didn't work until they finished finished over the next weekend. That one had a blurb about how some states called it War of Northern Aggression.

Sophomore year, though, that was the actual title of the section, and I don't remember how old the books at that school were because the only thing I remember from that year other than course material is hearing a teacher say, obviously in earshot of students since I heard it, that no one was gonna bother to fix the fire alarm because the district zoning made our school "the ethnic dumping ground" (exact words)

You know that actually fits in pretty well. Your time in high school was my time in elementary school.

Your books went from a section titled "The War of Northern Aggression" to a mention in the text.

My textbooks went from a mention in the text to no mention at all by high school.

"War of Northern Aggression".

The Ironclad Oath is lookin' mighty attractive now, ain't it?
