The main dispute is broadly between developed and developing countries. Negotiating blocs such as the Group for Equity and the Africa Group want a standard contract that makes it mandatory for pharmaceutical companies to share any medical products developed as a result of countries sharing dangerous pathogens with them.

Several European countries have argued this could stifle research and development and reportedly proposed a hybrid model, with a mix of mandatory and voluntary requirements.

It's all about the monieeeeesssss

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Not to worry, I've heard everyone is doing their own research these days.

We'll just blissfully ignore that the "research" is them asking a batshit doomsday cult on US social media. Or worse, the US government.

[–] WaxRhetorical@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

No, please, stop spreading disinformation.

..

They're doing their "research" with Grok now.

[–] FistingEnthusiast@lemmy.world 56 points 2 days ago (4 children)

Let's be blunt:

'Murica is a root cause of this, not just because of their stupidity, but because they export it to the rest of the world

If they weren't so fucking stupid, they could be leaders

Their scientists and working their bollocks off making life-saving vaccines and doing amazing analysis, but their administration and population are basically toddlers

[–] FenrirIII@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

Don't blame America, blame the billionaires forcing propaganda down the throats of millions. It's happening all around the world.

[–] Skankhunt420@sh.itjust.works -3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

If other people follow the US governments stupidity then that's on them.

All the signs are there to make better decisions and not do that.

USA didn't make this shit in a lab and spread it. So no, it isn't their fault. (And to be clear since people with low IQ gravitate to this comment, No country did that. It was highlighting the fact that no this isn't a single countries fault)

And last I checked there were rich fucks from a lot of different countries on those cruise ships that knew there was something going on and jumped ship and ran into their respective countries anyway.

[–] FistingEnthusiast@lemmy.world -1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

USA didn't make this shit in a lab and spread it. So no, it isn't their fault.

Oh

You're stupid

I thought as much.

[–] Skankhunt420@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

So you think that they did? If that's so, please tell me more about stupid.

Or are you saying its still Americas fault for it spreading even though it didn't even originate here?

If so, make that explainable in a way that isn't stupid.

Unless a country made that shit in a lab (which is stupid because that didn't happen) or allowed it to spread from their own borders then how is it any of their faults?

You seem to love voicing your opinion a lot while calling others stupid so I look forward to the thought provoking conversation I'm sure you will have about this.

[–] FistingEnthusiast@lemmy.world -3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You're following me around like a lost puppy

Do you have a crush on me? 👉👈🥹

[–] Skankhunt420@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Yeah so no opinion you want to share now? Surprising. You were so loud before.

I know it can be heard to keep up, but this is all the same thread of a single comment you made.

You called others stupid a lot in this same comment section of a comment you made so I thought wow let's get an intellectuals opinion on the subject.

Sad you don't want to play the game anymore. You seemed to have a lot of very smart opinions, after all. You should share them. Let us all know how it is the US fault about a virus spreading.

Maybe you could teach us something!

I'll bet by the way you dodged that lab comment that you believe some dumb shit like that. But then call others stupid.

[–] FistingEnthusiast@lemmy.world -3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh,

I don't want to leave you with any doubt whatsoever that I think you're stupid

But you also seem to be racist, or at least prone to conspiracy theories brewed up by other stupid people

I'm not going to engage with you any more

[–] Skankhunt420@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

So again not able to make a coherent response to the bullshit you peddled.

I am not surprised.

Also I'm not a racist and you jumping to that conlusion with zero evidence is further proof that your coherence needs some work.

And nope. I brought up the conspiracy theory shit since that would literally be the only way someone could try to blame a single country for a communicable disease and stated that that was stupid as fuck and didn't happen twice. (Pay attention)

I know its hard to keep up. But hey at least you didn't have to think too hard about a reply to your bullshit! You can just call people racist and avoid having to explain or take accountability for anything you say!

Good strategy you'll get far in life with it.

I'd probably opt for that strategy too if I didn't know what the fuck I was talking about.

[–] ElysianBladeRunner@piefed.social -4 points 2 days ago (3 children)

From your other comments, I can tell your aren’t an American living in America. I didn’t vote for this. I vehemently stand against it. I go to rallies, curved all our spending, and voting for a different country and hopefully a planet for my kids that isn’t fucked. I speak my mind in person to everyone.

The US is not helping itself or anyone else currently. Fact. But shut the fuck up about how stupid we are. Pull yourself up by your boot straps. The system has been failing our population, intentionally. For decades.

There are other players on the world stage using other countries like puppets through our politicians. Representatives casting their vote against what their population voted for. (Ie datacenters and support for Israel).

[–] FistingEnthusiast@lemmy.world -3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I started to reply to you, but after reading your reply a few times, I've realised that you're not worth it

When you said "pull yourself up by the bootstraps", you showed that you don't actually understand anything

Most of all, if you had actually understood my position, you would know that I don't hate all Americans. I'm marrying one soon, in fact.

I think that the American people are victims, but too many of you are victims by choice, and the real victims of the regime have been fucked from the start.

Native Americans

The descendents of people brought there as slaves

But there are plenty of dumb fuck white people who will gladly see everyone get hurt, just as long as they are told that they are better, not because they do anything differently, but just because they hate the idea of anyone who doesn't look like them being their equal

I recognise that there are good people in the US

But there's a disproportionate number of people who are cruel and hateful

We all know that your education system has been gutted.

We know that the system is designed to pit people against each other and keep you all desperate.

What we don't understand is the hate, and the way you will shit on each other to try to get ahead in a system that has been engineered specifically to make sure that you stay right where you are

And so many of you are stupid enough to think that somehow, you will be different, if only you can shit on everyone else hard enough

This might not be you, but it's too many of you.

[–] Skankhunt420@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

"I started to reply to you, but after reading your reply a few times, I've realized you're not worth it"

goes on for nine paragraphs

Lol

[–] ElysianBladeRunner@piefed.social 2 points 21 hours ago

My thoughts exactly. Not sure where he finds the time. I’m too busy being shafted by this government working my 60 hour work weeks to get back to this. A lot of assumptions from this ass hole. Thinks his country is immune to political sabotage. WOW is me because he thinks I didn’t outright lose friends over the hate this admin and past admins have been spewing.

I feel sympathy really for every one stupid out there. Sometimes they don’t know how to remove the inshitification clogging their arteries and ears. Suffering is suffering regardless of where or whom is doing it, and I don’t stand in support of atrocities in the present nor in the past.

[–] Holytimes@sh.itjust.works -2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Save your breath Lemmy is an extremely racist and xenophobic place.

You have about as much chance to convince your avg loud mouthed European to stop being a racist xenophobic asshole as you do getting a south baptist good ol boy to stop being a racist xenophobic asshole.

There's not a single community iv come across on basically the entirety of Lemmy that isn't just filled with hateful pricks. Sort of like a few furry ones that actively ban idiots for being xenophobic assholes.

But most of the time the mods never give a fuck so long as it's Americans or Indians being attacked.

[–] FistingEnthusiast@lemmy.world -3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's a lot of words to say "I'm stupid"

[–] Skankhunt420@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Lol you couldn't even use words to explain your position on how you think the US is responsible for the outbreak and spreading of hantavirus but call others stupid?

You could even just use a small amount of words to enlighten us all bud.

Can't do that either huh?

The nerve of this dumbass.

[–] Foni@piefed.zip 28 points 2 days ago (5 children)

One of the things that shocked me most about the pandemic was that no country had plans in place for the situation. I had always imagined the basement of some boring government building filled with folders containing plans for all kinds of contingencies, how naive of me.

If you make plans on calm, pleasant days, you'll forget things; if you make them on the fly in a panic, it will be complete chaos. And it wasn't just one country, it was everyone; nobody knew what to do. From what I can see, we're still the same.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 27 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

They all relied on the CDC's lead, and Trump fucked the CDC.

There were plans like that, but Trump fired the people who made them in 2018.

[–] ericatty@infosec.pub 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I remember reading about how Bush 2 was kind of paranoid about a pandemic and had plans made while in office. And that during the handover to Obama it was one of the things Bush told Obama to not ignore for the safety of the country. The admin after Obama ignored everything.

[Insert Archer gif of "do you want ants? Because that's how you get ants." Bonus if "ants" marked out for "pandemic"]

Anyway, I think about this a lot. Especially with the CDC gutted and measles outbreaks popping up. And now the Andes hantavirus strain.

[–] Holytimes@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Bush may have been an idiot about a bunch of things but at least he was smart in some places.

Trump has just been an idiot in every thing.

[–] cmbabul@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 day ago

For all his faults Dubs did seem to understand that millions of people getting sick is a bad

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 days ago (2 children)

The entire world relied on the US's CDC? I would think other countries would have their own plans.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The entire world relied on the US’s CDC?

I mean, kinda, with the exception of countries like the USSR and whatnot. It was one of those "US is the world superpower" things. Obviously that's not a good thing lately (if it ever was, which I won't opine on), but it's true. That's why, for example, the only places left in the world with samples of smallpox are one lab in Russia and a CDC-run lab here in the US (not too far from where I used to live, actually).

[–] Holytimes@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

Inherently there should be nothing wrong with one country having a reliable and effective system in place that everyone else relies on.

The problem is that it only takes one fucking idiot leader to ruin it.

The cdc after bush and Obama was extremely competent and reliable. It was perfectly reasonable to rely on them.

The trump attacked.

[–] elucubra@sopuli.xyz 2 points 2 days ago

Oh, you know, pandemic, plagues and shit have been kind of a recurring thing for centuries here in Europe. We're kind of jaded.

[–] bedwyr@piefed.ca 14 points 2 days ago

While there are contingency plans for everything, 1) we didn't follow them because if they admitted the truth they would need stricter protocols and they wanted the economy moving, and 2) we have all the wrong people in charge.

[–] SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

There are plans. But you can't plan for every detail

But the biggest problem is, that those plans somewhat rely on the population to help out and not turn into complete morons

[–] Holytimes@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

But your average person is a moron

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago

asia did. they already had practices for previous pandemics. Heck people where all going crazy over the super outdoor area cleaning trucks china had going.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

And most countries still don't

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

is this like china, the us, and russia not agreeing or the world.

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Developing countries want equality. Developed countries don't.

[–] Croquette@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

What's the saying? Equality feels like oppression to the privileged?

[–] Holytimes@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You just described the world.

According to China the us and Russia

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago

can add I guess NK and israel. All the current dicks.

[–] Zephorah@discuss.online 12 points 2 days ago (2 children)

It’s bizarre this isn’t a foregone conclusion. It’s also bizarre science isn’t plotting a course for a hantavirus vaccine. 50-80% mortality last check, on those contracting the HPS version.

[–] homura1650@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

They've been working on a vaccine since 2023.

https://www.wired.com/story/a-new-hantavirus-vaccine-is-in-the-works/

The reason we had a covid19 vaccine so quickly was because of all the work that was already done for a vaccine due to prior Coronavirus outbreaks (SARS in 2022, and MERS in 2012, with the latter seeing a resurgence in the past few years).

[–] bedwyr@piefed.ca 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Plus some of these transmissions don't seem so close contact, one person caught it sitting two seats behind someone on a plane with it.

It this goes airborne in a real way it could get bad. And if it was doing that, they would be telling us exactly what they are telling us now. Hopefully they can contain it still.

[–] Zephorah@discuss.online 2 points 1 day ago

You can get it from sweeping a floor with dried mouse droppings or contaminated materials. Which is part why you want to wear a mask cleaning or moving things in any space that might have mice: attic, storage shed, barn, etc.

I assume cruise ships have ventilation systems.

Just vacuuming with a unfiltered vacuum could do it.

[–] BrightCandle@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

We aren't handling the current pandemics in the world very well at all so its no surprise there is poor preparation for the next one. But having heard the WHO once again with its transmission mechanism as "close contact" rather than the actual known transmission vector of airborne it isn't a wonder agreements aren't being made. Every party involved is twisting reality and wants to be able to keep doing that into the future and the drug companies want to make sure they can maximise their profits when they do develop something.
