1. Relevant commentary on your own dull life. Posts should be about your own dull, lived experience. This is our most important rule. Direct questions, random thoughts, comment baiting, advice seeking, many uses of "discuss" rarely comply with this rule.

2. Original, Fresh, Meaningful Content.

3. Avoid repetitive topics.

4. This is not a search engine
Use a search engine, a tradesperson, Reddit, friends, a specialist Facebook group, apps, Wikipedia, an AI chat, a reverse image search etc. to answer simple questions or identify objects. Also see rule 1, “comment baiting”.

There are a number of content specific communities with subject matter experts who can help you.

Some other communities to consider before posting:

5. Keep it dull. If it puts us to sleep, it’s on the right track. Examples of likely not dull: jokes, gross stuff (including toes), politics, religion, royalty, illness or injury, killing things for fun, or promotional content. Feel free to post these elsewhere.

6. No hate speech, sexism, or bullying No sexism, hate speech, degrading or excessively foul language, or other harmful language. No othering or dehumanizing of anyone or negativity towards any gender identity.

7. Proofread before posting. Use good grammar and punctuation. Avoid useless phrases. Some examples: - starting a post with "So" - starting a post with pointless phrases, like "I hope this is allowed" or “this is my first post” Only share good quality, cropped images. Do not share screenshots of images; share the original image.

Was working on the shed, and the Hammer head gave way. I found the store where I originally bough it and bought a new handle. Modified it to fit and put it on. Now the hammer can do its job again

The head looks fine. The handle looks like it gave way.

Hammer handle head gave way ;)

It brings me joy when the exact same item is sold over a long period of time like that.

Those are the best

So the hammer head is not new at all, but the handle is.

I love old pieces of metal that haven't really changed for centuries and still do their job perfectly. But regarding head/handle breakage you can't go wrong with Fiskars tools.

Their axes are famous (for that). They use some sort of special technique where the head and the handle are not quite one piece but still inseparable, indestructible. I'm guessing the same goes for their hammers.

Sorry for advertising, but everybody uses them around here, it's a no-brainer, and I live close to their origin.

I'm a sucker for traditional axes but that doesn't mean I can't still have a Fiskars.

Even on this older specimen you can see that they go beyond "traditional" axe heads:
axe head :: width=30%
Your Fiskars head has a lip that protects the usual breaking point. It evolves into this, which is still available today:
fiskars axe :: width=30%
But you don't see this model much around here, almost everyone has a variation of this:
fiskars axe :: width=30%

How do you make sure the head stays secured to the handle?

[–] JelleWho@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

Two metal wedges in the top, hammered in

[–] pishadoot@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

The part that goes inside the hammer has a slot in it when you get it.

You shove the hammer head down as far as you can onto the handle so that the base of the head rests on the part of the handle. You might have to widen the slot a tad depending on your handle and the hammer head to get it all the way down. Some of the slot part usually sticks up over the top of the hammer head at this point.

Saw off the excess so that it's flush with the top, and then you take the two small metal wedges that come with the handle and hammer them into the top of the handle, perpendicular to the hammer head, spaced evenly in the handle material.

Then it is customary to wild out and smack the shit out of things to test it.

This is worse than scissors packaged with zip ties. You need a hammer to assemble your hammer

[–] pishadoot@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Well, you need a hammer to perform a repair on a broken hammer. And you need a drill to get the old hammer that's jammed in the head out. And a saw to get rid of the excess on top. A band saw is best, and also my preferred method of taking material from the slot if needed.

It seems the workshop is a circular list of dependencies and the product is mostly the persistence of the workshop.

[–] pishadoot@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago

No. The workshop has a list of dependencies, if you don't want to just throw stuff away when something has a very simple break like a hammer handle.

I pulled a sledge hammer head out of a dumpster because someone didn't want to replace the handle. I did want to and did so, over 15 years ago, been using that sledge ever since.

Everyone's free to replace a broken tool and move on, but if you have a workshop in the first place you're probably the kind of person that likes fixing stuff. I think the disposability of modern urban developed societies is a crime.

[–] DeadDigger@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Well you don't need another hammer just a rock or hard surface. You can then smash them in by holding it upside down

[–] Kommeavsted@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Wouldn't that risk dislodging the head again?

[–] DeadDigger@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 month ago

Well it just depends how much force you can apply. As long as they are inserted fully they are normally secured

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 months ago

I find myself surprised at how similar the color of the old handle is to the new one. I feel I would expect it to be darker. Anyway, wishing you decades of happy hammering.

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 months ago

Everything is defective now, my new shovel just broke in half on moderate usage, 2 years old, my older ones are still in use.

It has been getting worse our entire lives, but now the enshitification has gotten to the point where I can't trust to buy products from previously trustworthy suppliers. Not just home depot shovels, but best buy electronics are all garbage now.

[–] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

This looks like it can be the new logo of my populist political party. Thank you!

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

You all need it as much as any. Yes you are absent a blowhard leader, but are heading in the wrong direction faster than any, currently cancelling the magna carta and even goddamn jury trials and the right to protest. Plus the masterbaitorbase, a whole big thing on age controls, so much else.

We are fucked in the US too don't get me wrong, but jesus christ, england was the birthplace of modern liberty, and it's being dismantled in real time to no real push back.

[–] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

OI OI MATE AT LEAST I DON'T GET SHOT IN MAFS CLASS, YEAH?

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Only assholes write in all caps.

That said, wtf are you talking about mate? You are surrendering freedom and giving me shit, oi oi oi.

[–] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 1 points 2 months ago

You need to go through a court to do something as simple as change your name and you need to cut your grass on the house you own or else get fined by a homeowners association.... Freedom my backside

[–] e8CArkcAuLE@piefed.social 2 points 2 months ago

if it’s not ash,
it’s trash!

(this handle, as well as the one before, appear to be ash though)
