Meanwhile, the US spends it's time destroying other countries and installing dictatorships that people flee from and are wondering why the hell there's such a problem with migrants from said countries.

"But US"

This argument needs to die already. Someone else being bad is not a counter-argument

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

It's a well- known fallacy and propaganda strategy.

In fact, the USSR itself used it a lot, typically deflecting any criticism from the US with "but you hang negroes" back when that particular atrocity was a frequent occurrence.

[–] Mulligrubs@lemmy.world -1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

If you look at the same source that you've provided, you will also see that using the label "whataboutism" is in itself a fallacy and propaganda strategy.

So... irrelevant... your fallacious propaganda strategy is rejected.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

using the label "whataboutism" is in itself a fallacy and propaganda strategy.

That has been CLAIMED by people defending their own use of whataboutism, sure, but they're wrong.

They're literally claiming that it's a tu quoque (appeal to hypocrisy) fallacy to point out this particular tu quoque fallacy 🙄

So... irrelevant... your fallacious propaganda strategy is rejected.

Right back at you.

The US was actively trying to get whatever talent they could out of the USSR. It's called brain drain, and it's an effective way to prevent rival countries from growing.

[–] Katana314@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Last I checked, people with brains have legs. Unless this happens through mass kidnapping, the best way to do this is to have a good place to live.

Brain drain happened during the Nazi uprising, in 2025 after MAGA took over, and it happens at many game companies that treat their employees badly. But it’s generally poor management and a simple external invitation, not a “stealing” effort.

[–] hark@lemmy.world 0 points 1 week ago

It's easy to provide a good place to live when you've got tons of wealth. Just because the US treats some people well to score political points, doesn't mean it's a better place to live overall. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, you can see how the US acts when there's no competition. Wealth inequality soars, civil rights get rolled back, social services get cut, and the cost of living goes crazy, including the cost of schooling that was supposed to put us ahead. It's why the US screams endlessly about how dangerous China is, because they don't want competition that would require them to provide some benefits for their peasants so they can continue thinking the US is "the greatest country in the world".

[–] balderdash9@lemmy.zip -2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You judge socialist states by their worst blunders while forgetting half the shit the US did around the world. Then you people argue that socialism could never work-- while living under an economic system that only works for rich pedophiles.

[–] REDACTED@infosec.pub 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

No, I judge socialist states because I was born in one. I'm not an American, I'm from Baltics (Latvia SSR)

[–] Mulligrubs@lemmy.world -2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Why do you think they are arguing? They are comparing.

We all do it every day, it's unavoidable and will never die until the last human is dust. You need to keep a stiff upper lip and carry on. Be brave! Comparisons can't hurt you.

[–] nooch@lemmy.vg -2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It's relevant since the US is an actual, current threat. Arguements don't happen in a void, what about the fucking thing happening right now is a valid argument under a lazy irrelevant post like this one

[–] REDACTED@infosec.pub 1 points 1 week ago

"But Russia (China's ally)"

[–] TheMightyCat@ani.social 22 points 1 week ago (2 children)
[–] Skankhunt420@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 week ago

Holy shit this is actually real.

What the fuck lol

Thank god the East Germans did not have systemic sexual abuse of children. Phew.

[–] Gold_E_Lox@lemmy.dbzer0.com 21 points 1 week ago (2 children)

ussr has been gone for what 30 years?

why do i see memes abt it every fucking day here

[–] Godric@lemmy.world 24 points 1 week ago (1 children)

When clowns stop defending and downplaying the USSR 30 years after the empire collapsed, I'll stop joking about it!

[–] Gold_E_Lox@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 week ago (2 children)

couldnt you put your effort into something worthwhile? make fun of the current authoritarian regimes instead of trying to "own the ~~libs~~ tankies"

[–] Godric@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

I do loathe authoritarians of all shapes, yet nobody crawls out of the woodwork to moan nearly so loudly as when I "own the tankies", as you put it.

I ain't religous, but there's not much use in preaching to the choir!

[–] Gold_E_Lox@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 week ago (2 children)

not much use in preaching to the choir!

ah yes, thats why this is posted on lw, to really get those differing opinions!

[–] Godric@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

How I got banned for "spam" on .ml:

If you have suggestions where differing opinions aren't censored, I'm open to it! Sadly the Soviet approach to jokes is more common than not.

[–] Skankhunt420@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago

Why does this meme bother them?

[–] agent_nycto@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Loathe has an e at the end of it

[–] Mulligrubs@lemmy.world -1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

You forgot to end your sentence with a period, and "loathe" should be in quotes, because you're quoting them.

[–] agent_nycto@lemmy.world 0 points 1 week ago

You're forgetting that I'm speaking with what I'd like to call "modern Internet grammar and syntax" so it's comfortable appropriate given the context to not use quotes or periods. The quotes are debatable here because I'm not necessarily quoting the person but I am making a statement of fact on spelling.

So this is less of a gotcha than you think.

[–] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

I am seeing more tankie posts recently mocking anyone to the right of them regardless of extreme. Maybe OP is only trying to counter that.

[–] MehBlah@lemmy.world 22 points 1 week ago

tankie bait. They get their knickers in a twist every time.

[–] anton@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Socialism builds walls to keep people in, capitalism builds walls to keep people out.
The commonality is that people aren't happy where they are and are prevented from moving by systems of violence.

I can hear .ml screeching from here

Boy, OP, here comes all the angry tankies in this post and in your comment box. RIP.

[–] Alloi@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

not a fan of authoritarian state capitalist regimes parading as "communist states" myself.

but what do i know. im just some prole. :(

[–] ptu@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Which communist states would you qualify?

[–] flandish@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

there can be only one and it’s never existed.

[–] Alloi@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

the only one of course. let me show you how to get there.

[–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Welcome to cop city.

[–] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Despite the differences, ideologues from any group say the same thing: "But, but, it wasn't real [insert favourite ideology]. It has actually never even been tried!"

Yeah, I don't really care about what the rose-tinted form ought to be, I am more concerned about what it has been in practice. I can't remember who it was but a Greek philosopher mentioned practising and observing a concept to see if it works in real life or not, or what could be rectified. This is important.

[–] darthsundhaft@piefed.social 0 points 1 week ago (2 children)

As opposed to Trump's wall which aims to keep people out...

[–] Godric@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I can't tell if this woooshed, or slammed too hard into your forehead, so well said!

[–] darthsundhaft@piefed.social 1 points 1 week ago

Thx It's called a disorder 👌

You actually think its to keep people out?
