/c/TenForward: Your home-away-from-home for all things Star Trek!

Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. Use spoiler tags in comments, and NSFW checkbox for posts.
This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

~ 8. No Political Upheaval. Political commentary is allowed, but please keep discussions civil. Read here for our community's expectations.

Fun will now commence.

Hey Picard man, check out subspace channel 5

I laughed the first time they showed a Borg sphere. They really cut corners with those things.

The Queen wanted to keep cubes but she finally came around to the idea of spheres

[–] IcedRaktajino@startrek.website 42 points 6 days ago

In the novels, that's what the Borg finally do, and surprise, it works.

Do you have any idea how long it takes to manufacture a cube?

They would need to start sourcing it from contractors 2 centuries before the war, and the effort they put into it would destroy their economy.

[–] mercano@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago

It’s believable that a cube is such an investment in resources that only a few exist. Then we come to Voyager, where the Borg practically become the villain of the week with more cubes than a D&D enthusiast.

The concept of a borg economy intrigues me. There's no need for a currency. What would it even be?

[–] marcos@lemmy.world 21 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

I mean... It was a cheap joke, but money and trade are not requirements for an economy.

If you look at ants, balancing defense (and offense for some species) with colony upkeeping is a serious problem. The Borg also have a "Roman Empire" situation where their wealth comes from war, so yeah, it would be really complicated.

Exactly - resources is resources.

If they build this cube, something else has to give.

If they need significant amounts of material resources they'd likely strip mine entire planets, much like the cardies. But unlike the cardies they wouldn't need to enslave the local population and devote additional personnel as prefects, guards, etc.

[–] CookieOfFortune@lemmy.world 10 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Maybe like an organism. Sure there’s no currency but resources are still allocated.

Since their cubes regenerate, do they Build the cubes, or just kind of let them "grow". Are they build by board nanoprobes?

[–] Spacehooks@reddthat.com 3 points 5 days ago

Didn't they destroy a bunch a ships because a few borg went rouge. I think it was voyager. Point is they care about losses too much.

[–] RiceMunk@sopuli.xyz 11 points 6 days ago (1 children)

They should have done it when Janeway was stuck in the Delta Quadrant, though.

Downside, then they wouldn't be able to come back to the Delta Quadrant.

Explain (I'm not following the reasoning)? Not saying you're wrong, just been a while since I've seen it.

[–] RiceMunk@sopuli.xyz 9 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

Been a while since I've seen it myself, but I remember at least in the finale the Voyager roflstomping a bunch of borg cubes. Shitposting logic means that any time travel shenanigans are ignored and we must conclude that Janeway is the bane of all Borg everywhere.

[–] Onomatopoeia@lemmy.cafe 4 points 6 days ago

Ah, OK.

Yea, it's been forever so I only vaguely rember that.
