He also ruled that the tribunal was wrong to say that discriminating against transgender women would automatically be unlawful, as he believed it is possible that the discrimination could result in a “positive” outcome.

Australia still practices forced sterilization. It is literally not illegal to do so.

The conservative party and coalition has been the dominant force since 1944. It's only very recently that the left has started gaining real ground.

lol that photo of course they all look like that. Glad that no young people have joined them.

Welp, time for the left to start hating lesbians.

TERFs are pretty widely hated already by most reasonable people who know what they are.

As a lesbian trans leftist, mind explaining why we would do that?

On the one hand I feel like this is an example of an oppressed group engaging in some discrimination of their own.

On the other hand, I feel like a trans person is basically a straight (cis) person who was born with the wrong hardware. Therefore a trans person is not the same thing as a lesbian and is unlikely to be call themselves a lesbian. So, this ruling might not be as bad as it might initially seem.

Is there a nuance that I am missing? I have no dog in this fight, I am just trying to understand what is happening.

There are trans lesbians (and bi people, etc.). Sexual orientation and gender identity are distinct things.

[–] BillDaCatt@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

That's helpful. Thank you.

Nope, literally call myself a lesbian - sometimes we say transbian to further identity ourselves but that just means trans and lesbian.

Also Lesbians are on the whole the most supportive demographic and the least likely to have issue with trans women. We consider them our biggest allies.

This is TERFs (Trans Exclusionary Radical "Feminists") trying to push trans women out of womens spaces.

Judging by the internet presence (as an outsider), most trans people are former straight men who transitioned without changing their sexual orientation and thus became lesbians.

Can’t speak for others but before transitioning I always wished I could be a lesbian. I often found myself hanging out with lesbians and surrounding myself in lesbian culture. 9/10 times I was attracted to someone it turned out they were a lesbian, etc.

It was very confusing, because it’s like “I’m male so this must just be straight” but inside being a lesbian just felt right?

In AmeriKKKa English, colloquially they are called “Pick mes!” Historically we called them Quisling. In this exact case, they deserve to be called Sturmabteilung.

They are praxing exactly what Nazis want: division, exclusion, and dominion.
