Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.

Rules
  1. πŸ˜‡ Be Nice!

    • Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.
  2. 🏘️ Community Standards

    • Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
    • Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
    • Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
    • Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.
  3. 🧬 Keep it Real

    • Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.
  4. πŸ“½οΈ Credit Where Credit is Due

    • Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
    • Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!
  5. πŸ“‹ Post Formatting

    • Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
    • Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
    • When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,
      βœ… Correct: https://xkcd.com/386/
      ❌ Incorrect: https://xkcd.com/
  6. πŸ“¬ Post Frequency/SPAM

    • Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 πŸ–) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 πŸ–) will be removed.
  7. πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ Internationalization (i18n)

    • Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
      SΓ, por favor [Spanish/EspaΓ±ol]
  8. 🍿 Moderation

    • We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.
    • When reporting posts and/or comments, quote which rule is being broken, and why you feel it broke the rules.
Web Accessibility

Note: This is not a rule, but a helpful suggestion.

When posting images, you should strive to add alt-text for screen readers to use to describe the image you're posting:

Another helpful thing to do is to provide a transcription of the text in your images, as well as brief descriptions of what's going on. (example)

I feel that kind of violence every time I look at my tiny girl bunny. She’s so cute I want to hit something lol

[–] tpyo@lemmy.world 33 points 4 days ago (1 children)

It's got a name!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cute_aggression

It's a thing. I definitely feel it, too

I know people who feel this, but like, why? It makes no sense to me. Like is it a crossed wires thing?

[–] FosterMolasses@leminal.space 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Allegedly, it's piggybacking off some evolutionary tribalism instinct to protect our species' young. But the instinct went too hard, so we want to preserve everyone else's young too, like puppies and kitties.

But this explanation still doesn't account for people who respond to baby schema in animals but find it repulsive in human babies lol

But this seems like the exact opposite. Squeezing the young until they pop is the opposite of protecting them.

For me it's squeezing the thing until it pop.

... Don't imagine that.

Oh gosh no, it’s not like that. It’s more like that feeling when you get really really frustrated at something and you get a tense and angry feeling in your chest. That is what it’s like sometimes when I look at my bunny because she’s very small, soft, and extremely cute.

[–] RustyNova@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

It actually manifests differently depending on the person!

Does anybody else not feel what cute is? Idk i just see a baby kitten or something and im like yes that is a younger version of an adult cat.

Love cats but i don't feel much different between kittens and adult cats.

Same for human babies, i just see them as very young humans. Then you hear adult women calling adult men cute if they're sexy and it confuses me lmao, i just dont know what people mean when they say cute.

Cute is part of our "don't kill the screaming baby" programming. Best described as emotionally attractive.

It makes parents bond with children. As a spill over, it makes other adults not want to drop kick annoying small humans. It also stops older siblings wanting to murder the attention magnet that came into their life.

The level of activation of this effect varies. It kicks in hard during pregnancy, both for mum, and anyone around them. Not feeling it strong is not a huge issue.

It also tends to be blended with other emotional responses. You might actually feel it, but not recognise it as a separate emotion. The positive feeling towards cats is partly due to them being small, squishy, and big eyed. We default to them being babies/small children, and give them the leeway we would a child causing minor chaos. Cuteness is part of that effect.

Fair enough, i just don't think i feel that at all. I also never felt the desire to hurt children lmao i mean yesh they can be annoying and loud but so can adults idk i guess im just missing that part of my brain or something lol

[–] cynar@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

As a parent I fully understand the need to curtail it. I also get how some parents could shake their baby to death. Feeling it and acting on it are totally different things.

It's ok not to feel it. Our brains are often wired differently. I personally only get cuteness mildly. I mostly notice it by how I'm being biased, rather than a strong, independent emotion. You likely have chunks of it, but mentally bundle them into different emotions.

[–] ExtremeUnicorn@feddit.org 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I do get what you mean and I feel similarly when people talk about cats, dogs and especially human babies.

But does this do anything for you? Because it does for me.

Lol, no idk i just see a tiny lizard and i get sensitivities like definitely dont step on that but idk for all i know it's an adult of a tiny species of lizard

it means the appearance of the animal triggers a desire to hug or cuddle or pet it. evolutionary explanation is it's a natural instinct resulting from reproductive success from a stronger desire to care for offspring.

with sexy men being called cute by woman I think it means they find them attractive in a way that's not necessarily masculine. evolutionary explanation might be that they appear that they might produce offspring that are cute and therfore induce the desire to care for offspring in the parent.

The legal basis for 'illegally cute'.
