I've got my doubts. Body sculpting, explicitly including sculpting to look "animal like" existed even back in Cyberpunk 2020, which was released in 1988.

Furries were around before that of course, but the first furry convention wasn't until 1989, and furries didn't really reach mainstream awareness enough that uninvolved people started to think hating on them was cool until even later than that.

I don't doubt someone involved in Cyberpunk Red took some enjoyment in making someone who dislikes furries uncomfortable, but I'd be VERY surprised if that's why they were included back in 1988.

Here's the text of the citation: (including the link)

J Gray on Discord: "[...] Exotics? There because it was amusing to make a guy who hated furries draw them."

I wasn't able to find when J Gray started working on Cyberpunk, but in a few AMAs they mention working on Red and the "2070 era".

Ok, to be fair, he could have meant "still there"

It's very possible this explanation is the reason they ended up remaining in RED, but 2013 was in 1988. 2020 was in 1990, and I'm pretty sure that was the edition Exotics were added.

Plus, there were already furries in the RPG scene at the time. Albedo was released in '88.

2013 was in 1988. 2020 was in 1990

Imagine this with no context.

Oh, well that's interesting! In theory, they could have been talking about 2020 then...

I remember playing 2020 when I was in high school, but apparently, I was playing basically as soon as it came out, which I didn't realise at the time

Thats the cyberpunk way.

They should have had the exotic animal body sculpting in the video game. At least mods exist.

I was never that into Judy in the unmodded game. But furry Judy ... that's a whole different story. Definitely went through the whole romance angle on that one!

That mod about tripled the total playtime I got out of that game. It's the good shit.

On my chrome I wish they forced them to draw my fetish instead, SMH my head

As a former writer for 2020 I can say that the idea for exotics came from other source material and not the furry “culture” as it were.
