Example:

  1. Articles must be relevant to politics. Links must be to quality and original content. Articles should be worth reading. Clickbait, stub articles, and rehosted or stolen content are not allowed. Check your source for Reliability and Bias here.
  2. Be civil, No violations of TOS. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). I thought the point of Christianity was that everyone deserves mercy?

[–] Perky@fedia.io 101 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Theologically speaking, it's the opposite: nobody deserves mercy, but God gives it to them anyways. But you'd have to open a Bible to know that, which none of these ghouls have.

[–] meco03211@lemmy.world 45 points 2 weeks ago (16 children)

I thought that was no one deserves God's mercy. Not that the mewling masses don't deserve mercy from each other.

The point of Christianity is that if you can convince people that they shouldn't expect any rewards until they die, you get a really compliant set of workers and soldiers who will let you impoverish and mistreat them because "the meek will inherit the earth." You know, after your value has been fully extracted by the owners.

Christianity went from a cult to a state religion REALLY fast because of this concept.

I don’t think that applies here. Hegseth is straight up evil.

[–] stringere@sh.itjust.works 21 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Yes but he can/is using religion to get what could otherwise be good people to do evil things.

I say could be otherwise good because once you're doing evil...well, evil is as evil does.

Not sure that’s how Christianity is supposed to work…

[–] halloween_spookster@lemmy.world 41 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

glances at the history of Christianity

[–] TranscendentalEmpire@lemmy.today 26 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

The saddest thing about the history of Christianity is just how juxtaposed it is to the actual theology contained in the new testament. Anytime in history a movement actually starts to apply the actual lessons of Christianity they seem to get hunted down by their fellow Christians.

My dad's side of the family got kicked out of Europe towards the end of the bohemian reformation, and then got kicked out of colonial georgia for accepting slaves and native Americans into the church.

There isn't a religion on the planet that hasn't been manipulated and misconstrued to encourage violence against others.

Maybe not how it's supposed to work, but it is how it's always worked.

Why the fuck is the Pentagon hosting a Christian service anyway?

As an aside, with as evil as they are, we should be calling them The Pentagram.

Oh man, he really wants to subject himself to that? Well good for him, he deserves no mercy

[–] Wataba@sh.itjust.works 38 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Don't cry when violence comes to your doorstep then, Petey.

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 17 points 2 weeks ago

When you encourage violence against others, you invite it on yourself. It would normally destroy me if I caused grievous harm to another, but Nazis? I could off them and sleep with a clear conscience.

[–] nosuchanon@lemmy.world 36 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

This is a religious war for these people. They believe they are sending the next wave of the crusades.

[–] aeiou@piefed.social 9 points 2 weeks ago

Some years ago I'd seen studies showing a 'religiosity cycle' - war and strife drives people to religion, religion drives more war and strife - and I can't help but wonder if that's the goal here.

Did he consider that if his prayer was granted, he'd get a lightning bolt right up his own ass?

He's praying for violence against the United States?

[–] tgcoldrockn@lemmy.world 24 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

His words are antithetical to Jesus's teachings. Diametrically opposed even. Perhaps even a smidge Anti-Christ-ian to anyone with morals or brains or a shred of bravery to stand against this? Hmmm?

[–] zalgotext@sh.itjust.works 10 points 2 weeks ago (5 children)

It irks me when people try and counter this kind of stuff by arguing that Jesus was all about love and peace and kum-bah-yah blah blah blah. Because

  1. Trying to mount arguments based on logic with these people is an exercise in futility
  2. If you've read the book, he kinda really wasn't
  3. His "teachings" are either the fanciful musings of some illiterate shepherds, or state-sanctioned propaganda, and either way, are kind of worthless from a philosophical or moral standpoint
  4. Most importantly, religion has absolutely no place in government, and that's what we should be saying every time something like "the monthly Pentagon Christian religious service, headed by one of the highest officials in the federal government" crops up in the news, instead of this pedantic attempt to paint Jesus as some peaceful figure

I too pray for violence against Hegseth, Trump, and others

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, hosting his first monthly Christian worship service at the Pentagon since the Iran war began, prayed Wednesday to have “every round find its mark.”

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 12 points 2 weeks ago

Ah, so the GOP and MAGA.

[–] CosmoNova@lemmy.world 11 points 2 weeks ago

[–] Gork@sopuli.xyz 9 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

If you kill Americans, if you threaten Americans anywhere on Earth, we will hunt you down without apology and without hesitation, and we will kill you.

A previous statement by Hegseth some time ago. Man, this guy's bloodthirsty.
