Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

I am disappointed nobody mentioned that 42 is the perfect choice since it’s the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything.

[–] peopleproblems@lemmy.world 2 points 34 minutes ago

If the draft comes, I guess this is a perk of having POTS. But I would bet being the only male I've ever met with it, they're going to do all the stupid ass testing because they won't believe my entire medical record

[–] MartianRecon@lemmus.org 6 points 1 hour ago

They'll need adults to join to help clean up the fucking mess of epic proportions that the current administration is creating.

[–] WanderWisley@lemmy.world 13 points 2 hours ago (2 children)

Oh thank god I turn 43 next month…really dodged the bullet or draft on that one…

[–] PumaStoleMyBluff@lemmy.world 15 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

The draft was already authorized to go up to 45, just hasn't been used that high.

[–] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 1 points 52 minutes ago

I thought it was 44, and I’m seeing examples of that happening back during WW2, such as Pvt. William S. Frederick, Sr.

Along the dusty road to Camp Gruber, forty-four-year-old Pvt. William S. Frederick, Sr., encountered his own son, twenty-year-old Pvt. William S. Frederick, Jr. Both were taxicab drivers from Olean, New York; neither had dependents; and both had been snapped up by their local draft board.

[–] Jaegeras@piefed.social 9 points 2 hours ago

Watch them raise the age again, now it'll probably be up to 55!

I thought I dodged the bullet myself when I learned it was previously up to 35.

"If you're not with us, then you'll die for us and we'll make sure of it!" Their motto, probably.

[–] adubya@feddit.online 3 points 2 hours ago (2 children)

Welp, do they take a goofy dude near that age that needs to lose some pounds?

[–] P00ptart@lemmy.world 2 points 22 minutes ago

That's one way to get in shape. They've had pre-basic programs for that for quite a while now. They'll pay you to do it but I don't think it counts towards your contract time until you make it to basic.

[–] Jaegeras@piefed.social 2 points 1 hour ago

One way to find out. Enlist.

[–] Tempus_Fugit@lemmy.world 17 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

I hope they try and draft my ass. There is no way in hell I'll ever fight for this country again. Been there done that, don't recommend.

[–] P00ptart@lemmy.world 1 points 26 minutes ago

Same, even if they let me actively hit a blunt at the range.

[–] BillyClark@piefed.social 30 points 4 hours ago

Why did Trump get rid of all of that DEI stuff again? Wasn't the claim that it was lowering our standards? So, if that's true, then getting rid of DEI should mean we can meet our hiring quotas while still maintaining high standards, right?

Because if they get rid of DEI and they still had to lower hiring standards for the military, just as they also recently did for the DOJ, then that's pretty conclusive evidence that their objections to DEI were completely about bigotry and not about the competency of the candidates.

[–] kylie_kraft@lemmy.world 95 points 5 hours ago (6 children)

oh shit we're going to get drafted aren't we

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 56 points 5 hours ago (4 children)

A draft would be a civil war, especially if they set it at 42.

Nobody would fucking go, and we'd see ICE agents used to round up anyone "military aged" starting in poverty striken neighborhoods and eventually expanding.

trump's dumb enough to try it tho, so we're probably gonna find out.

[–] Montagge@lemmy.zip 1 points 21 minutes ago

Lol the draft isn't going to a civil war

[–] kylie_kraft@lemmy.world 13 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

You know that at very least Hegseth has been walking around with a half chub at the thought of reinstating the draft. We're talking about invading multiple countries at any given time. All of the strong man dictators that Trump admires are in countries with compulsory military service. Then there's the timing of the announcement that Barron is ineligible to serve because he's too tall or some shit, the press secretary refusing to rule out a draft, and now this. I think they are seriously contemplating the possibility of a mandatory draft in the future.

[–] wjrii@lemmy.world 5 points 2 hours ago

Then there’s the timing of the announcement that Barron is ineligible to serve because he’s too tall or some shit

I had to look that up. Apparently the limit is 6'8", and they claim he's 6'9". Now, the kid is clearly a tall motherfucker, but how much y'all wanna bet he actually tops out at 6'7"? (6'9" is 205.74cm)

[–] amateurcrastinator@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago

They will give you some free shit and people will flock like sheep. Or they will just snatch you off the street and instead of aligator Alcatraz it will be boot camp

[–] Dionysus@leminal.space 3 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Huh, so their logic is draft me, give me a gun, teach me to shoot, and throw a military parade birthday party.

This is going to be one for the books.

[–] CainTheLongshot@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago

Their logic is to draft you, put you in high vis hand-me -downs that have had their previous holes patched up, and put you on the front lines with rocks until his problem solves itself.

[–] cranakis@reddthat.com 44 points 5 hours ago

I think I'll go fight for the Canadians in the coming war.

[–] Jaegeras@piefed.social 23 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Currently, it's still voluntary, thankfully.

But, I wouldn't be sure considering who we're dealing with.

[–] JamieDub86@piefed.social 12 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

Voluntary but you cant say no.

[–] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.world 2 points 42 minutes ago
[–] kata1yst@sh.itjust.works 11 points 4 hours ago

Because of the implication.

[–] Carmakazi@piefed.social 12 points 4 hours ago

MP's looking to enforce a draft will need to wear flak vests. The whole thing, including the bits and bobs that infantrymen typically throw away to save weight.

[–] SwifferWetjet@thelemmy.club 14 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago) (5 children)

It's okay, just made a not so subtle reference to fragging. You might be locked up but you won't be murdering some innocent child who was born the wrong color!

That's my plan at least. Lol but the exasperated kind of lol not like a haha yknow

[–] Clent@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

The issue with assuming you can use fragging as an option is how it assumes you'll be near anyone that deserves a fragging. You'll likely be grouped with other drafties.

There was a Vietnam era strategy where enlisting decreased one's chances of being sent to Vietnam.

[–] SwifferWetjet@thelemmy.club 2 points 1 hour ago

Whoever is telling me go there, do that. I'm not looking for the General Supreme himself. Fight war not wars you feel me? That hydra may have so many heads you can't count em but I will be goddamned if I won't swing that sword when it's handed it to me :)

I'm all for the draft on one very strict condition; it has to be truly random with no way for rich kids to get mommy and daddy to buy them out of it or into a cushy assignment. When the rich kids have an equal chance of dying in oil wars, there won't be so many oil wars.

[–] Crackhappy@lemmy.world 8 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

That's a terrible solution to the current problem.

[–] nulluser@lemmy.world 4 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

I wasn't really offering it as a solution to the current problem. I'm just saying that I don't believe the current problem would exist if, for the past 10 years or more, rich kids were candidate fodder for the meat grinder.

[–] Eh_I@lemmy.world 40 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

I can't, my bone spurs hurt.

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 20 points 5 hours ago

Is your daddy rich? No? Off to the front with you!

[–] partofthevoice@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 hours ago

I know someone who is non reenlistable because they got drunk and did a bit of surprise cocaine the day before a surprise piss test. Wonder if they’ll ease the cocaine restriction too.

[–] SapphironZA@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

But you better not be black and not be able to shave down to the skin.

[–] AbidanYre@lemmy.world 2 points 34 minutes ago (1 children)

Kicking out all the minorites and then sending the white guys to go die in Iran seems counter productive for their racist goals.

[–] SapphironZA@sh.itjust.works 1 points 10 minutes ago

Its not about sending them to die. Its making sure that the military consists of a monoculture of people from similar background that can be used to oppress minorities.

[–] lemmylump@lemmy.world 17 points 5 hours ago

Bring out your morons!

[–] Donjuanme@lemmy.world 9 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

Does he think we're Russia? I don't think the American military has the same problems as the Russian one (besides an absolute monster at the very top)

[–] grue@lemmy.world 3 points 53 minutes ago

Does he think we’re Russia?

Literally yes. Russia is MAGA's vision for America.

[–] thespcicifcocean@lemmy.world 15 points 4 hours ago

just wait til they start throwing people at the meat grinder which is Iran. invading that place would be complete insanity.

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 10 points 5 hours ago

The waiver was rubber stamps anyways.

They give them out for almost anything, I knew a guy that got one for being forced into being a child soldier in South America before coming to America and joining our military.

And he was already out of bootcamp by the time he got the waiver because his recruiter told him not to mention it to anyone till after lol.
