“Records continue to be smashed with this government’s promise to cut migration in absolute tatters, as half a million would-be migrants arrived on a net basis over the twelve months to January – the highest in recorded history,” said Dr Kevin You, Senior Fellow at the Institute of Public Affairs.

Today, the Australian Bureau of Statistics updated its Overseas Arrivals and Departures database, with the reference period January 2026. IPA analysis of the data shows:

  • Net permanent and long-term arrivals (i.e., people who have arrived in Australia with a declared intention to stay in the country for 12 months or longer) in January 2026 were 57,270, the highest January net arrivals on record.
  • Net permanent and long-term arrivals totalled 494,540 in the twelve months to January 2026, the highest in recorded history.

This article claims to cite the ABS, but the ABS has a very different story: https://www.abs.gov.au/media-centre/media-releases/annual-net-overseas-migration-falls-second-year-row

Overseas migration added 306,000 people to Australia's population in the 2024-25 financial year, according to data released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

Jenny Dobak, ABS head of migration statistics, said: ‘Net overseas migration dropped by 124,000 people in 2024-25, falling for the second year in a row since the financial year high of 538,000 people in 2022-23.

‘The change in net overseas migration was driven by both a 14 per cent decrease in migrant arrivals, particularly temporary visa holders, and a 13 per cent increase in migrant departures.

‘While net overseas migration is not currently at the level seen prior to the pandemic, this year’s overseas migration figures are the closest to pre-COVID-19 figures since annual net overseas migration peaked in September quarter 2023.

‘Migrant arrivals in 2024-25 were only 3 per cent higher than in 2018-19, but migrant departures remained 15 per cent lower than they were in 2018-19.’

The irony is: Most people's jimmies would not have been rustled even if this article hadn't been full of shit. Go back a few generations and almost all of us are migrants.

And I imagine we'll have to take more refugees too (which I completely agree with) considering the number of displaced people that are growing in the ME because of our allies' insane and brutal actions

There’s no world in which people from the Middle East should need to be taken in as refugees half way around the world in Australia. Why won’t any closer country take them in?

Look at the state of the ME. It's become a near-disaster across many countries. Among these countries, most have been taking refugees for decades even though their economies are not necessarily well-off. They are unlikely to be able to take more in high numbers. Here's a map that shows where ME refugees tend to go (to countries near by): https://www.refugeecouncil.org.au/how-many-refugees/2/

Our country has been first off the rank to approve the bombing of Iran by Israel and the US. Iranian voices had already warned before the attack what this would mean to the region. If we are going to support unsanctioned bombing of civilians, their homes, schools, hospitals, we should have the decency to care for some of the survivors who are not to blame for the catastrophe.

Almost 1400 new net permanent and long-term arrivals per day, every day, for 12 months. The media and the government told us that this number was shrinking. Turns out they lied, as always.

No response to people pointing out the ABS data contradicts you? You have zero credibility, just another conservative clown eating up the misinformation you're being fed by propoganda.

How do you reconcile this assessment with these statements on the ABS site:

"Net overseas migration was 306,000 in 2024-25, down from 429,000 a year earlier. Migrant arrivals decreased 14% to 568,000 from 661,000 arrivals a year earlier."

When people have an agenda, they won't let a little thing like facts get in their way.
