Fuck Subscriptions

Naming and shaming all "recurring spending models" where a one-time fee (or none at all) would be appropriate and logical.

Expect use of strong language.

Follow the basic rules of lemmy.world and common sense, and try to have fun if possible.

No flamewars or attacking other users, unless they're spineless corporate shills.

Note that not all subscriptions are awful. Supporting your favorite ~~camgirl~~ creator or Lemmy server on Patreon is fine. An airbag with subscription is irl Idiocracy-level dystopian bullshit.

New community rule: Shilling for cunty corporations, their subscriptions and other anti-customer practices may result in a 1-day ban. It's so you can think about what it's like when someone can randomly decide what you can and can't use, based on some arbitrary rules. Oh what, you didn't read this fine print? You should read what you're agreeing to.

This is good to know. I'm gonna pretend it's true anyways as personal fuel to guarantee I move off of Windows on my next machine. Nothing makes my brain revolt faster than forced subscriptions.

Whocaresfully? It's a new word I invented to describe how I feel about anything a dying company does in the background where it doesn't affect me at all. Do whatever you want, I will never buy anything from Microsoft.

It's news for the poor people who don't have the freedom to leave. Have some sympathy for them. Their numbers are fewer than they think but they are out there.

Anyone from or supporting microslop products.

[–] T00l_shed@lemmy.world 36 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

If its fully modular. I would remove the subscription and ai modules please...and the Microsoft module...

With such good gaming support on Linux, I have no idea who Windows is for anymore.

[–] tanisnikana@lemmy.world 24 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Corporate environments and people with two commas in their paychecks telling us to use AI for everything.

[–] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 13 points 4 months ago (1 children)

$000,000,045,000.00

I'm rich baby

[–] tanisnikana@lemmy.world 8 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Unless you’re getting one check a year, your paycheck won’t be forty-five grand.

No, I’m talking about the guillotine chow that makes two million a month.

[–] essell@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

It could be! Let's not assume they're poor just because they're on lemmy

I use it at work and keep it on one home machine for music software I've sunk money into (Ableton Live and various software synths and effects). Everything else has been Linux now for some years.

[–] saltnotsugar@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago

People who are into a digital dominatrix that makes you do dumb stuff for no benefit.

[–] fubbernuckin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 months ago

Anticheat still frequently trips on Linux. It's not Linux's fault but companies still go out of their way to screw over Linux users for some reason.

[–] 0ndead@infosec.pub 20 points 4 months ago (1 children)

A site I’ve never never heard of spreading unsubstantiated rumors? Shocked I tell you!

[–] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

This is tech 4 games, bud, the fourth installment in the series that started with tech gamers 1!

[–] Makeshift@sh.itjust.works 12 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Nope. Not paying a subscription for an OS. My next PC is officially going to be Linux!

Only reason I haven't yet is I'm lazy and not in the mood to make the huge leap. I can and will mess up the simplest instructions, so I'll be trying to fix my own screw up for a week, whatever I mess up.

Subscription is too far though. Bye, Windows!

[–] TowardsTheFuture@lemmy.zip 6 points 4 months ago

To be honest, install is easy, and if you just go with flat packs and app images you probably won’t have to mess with much. Sure you could be crazy and use Arch if you wanna tinker with everything, but mint, bazzite, and others are pretty stable and simple. Just a small amount of “which suits my needs/wants best” before you install.

But now is not a great time to try and build a computer so… womp

[–] mrmaplebar@fedia.io 5 points 4 months ago

Just back up your important data! Always backup before messing with operating systems or partitioning.

Microslop's Windows 12 reportedly set for release this year as a fully modular, subscription-based, AI-focused OS

[–] ButtonMcLemming@lemmy.world 7 points 4 months ago

That's what they think.

[–] cronenthal@discuss.tchncs.de 9 points 4 months ago

I'll watch this dumpster fire with glee, having switched to bazzite a good while ago.

[–] expatriado@lemmy.world 9 points 4 months ago (1 children)

i can avoid Microsoft at home, but not at work 😞, 40hrs a week of sloppiness

[–] 30p87@feddit.org 2 points 4 months ago

39hrs for me

[–] LostWanderer@fedia.io 5 points 4 months ago

Microslop Broken Window 12, is going to be a disaster and I hope it hurts Microslop!

[–] TomMasz@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago
[–] NutinButNet@hilariouschaos.com 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

This has to be a joke. Microsoft can’t be that stupid to actually do that.

[–] ButtonMcLemming@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

It feels like we're living in an Onion article.

[–] monstoor@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago

Glad I switched over in 2006!

Lmfao nope. Fuck you, Microslop.

[–] Feyd@programming.dev 3 points 4 months ago

Some features of Windows 11 might also be locked away behind a subscription model that are expected to be “advanced AI services”, but the core OS will be a one-time purchase only.

So same as now

[–] rafoix@lemmy.zip 3 points 4 months ago

Is Microsoft trying to release a live-service shooter version of Windows?

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 2 points 4 months ago

and you think folks like 11? this is going to make 11 look like a trumpy os.

[–] Pratai@piefed.ca 2 points 4 months ago

Win 10 here no plan to change that.

[–] ef9357@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

Absolutely not. Linux is a better OS anyway.
