Mass casualty event

A community for discussing events around the World
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed.
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF OCTOBER 19 2025
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

Mass casualty event
It's a massacre, ffs.
That implicated with bombing cities. What the fuck do people expect to happen if you're throwing a couple tons of explosives on densely inhabited urban areas?
And people will blame Iran or Hamas for putting military targets near civilians, but that happens everywhere. Where's the Pentagon? Where's the White House and the Capitol? Smack bang in the middle of a massive population centre.
I don't think it's even possible to have war without a load of civilian deaths. At least not since "new advanced weaponry" meant "a slightly longer sword".
This is tragic and there needs to be answer for it.
It’s a girl’s school, it’s not a military target, there weren’t “militants” inside and this isn’t Hezbollah where they can claim it was being used as a base. What the fuck happened here, and who specifically is responsible?
This is not tragic, but a war crime - and this war is itself a crime, simply because it is completely contrary to international law.
This is not tragic, but a war crime
It can be both?
Of course it is tragic, heartbreaking even. But what bothers me about the term tragic in this context is that it makes it sound as if the deaths of these innocent girls were inevitable, as if they had been killed in a natural disaster for which no one is responsible.
However, that is not the case here at all: these girls were murdered by ruthless criminals.
Some videos show it appears to be a ballistic missle launch failure from a nearby launch site. The videos have not been verified. We likely won't know for sure until after Iran's regime falls.
Either way its a war crime, either the US/Israel struck a school, or Iran placed offensive missle launchers dangerously close to a school/city.

Same argument the Zionists were making about the hospital in Gaza... Recycling the same shit over and over again. It's very easy to distinguish a mid-range air to land missile from a short-range land to land missile.
Please, enlighten us with your knowledge about different types of missiles and how to distinguish between them.
I recommend you check out the analysis carried out by osint as explained by @MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net

It was 60 meters next to a military base
Wikipedia says 600, but I have not independently verified that.
Edit: I have indepdendently verified. From the school to the nearest perimeter of the thing that looks like an airfield, 200+ meters. To any structure likely to be targeted, more. I would say there was something military "in town", and the school was not in the middle of military stuff. It was in a civilian area of the town.
Photo obtained with Wikimapia. Several hundred meters off the possible mark (air field).
Possible clue from Time magazine:
According to Amelirad, based on reports from locals in Minab, the school had previously been used as a military facility but was later converted into a school attended by children from a mixture of military and civilian families attracted by lower tuition.

Speculation: the US targeted the school deliberately, because their software marked it as a military object. The software was not receiving timely intelligence updates. The building had been converted into a school years ago.
And I don't think we have missiles in our arsenal that are bad enough that they would miss a target by 60m. Maybe I'm wrong about that though.
They are able to strike a single moving car in a convoy, so I'd say that they wanted to bomb that school.
Don't tell me: there was a Hamas tunnel under it ...
The casualty numbers have risen - it's already 165 people dead from this strike. :(
Re "Hamas tunnel" - there was an IRGC base 600 meters away.
Since the US military is unlikely to release the data, we probably cannot know if a weapon malfunctioned or the strike planner clicked on the school.
In an ideal world, if a strike planner knowingly clicks on a school, they go to prison. If they aren't given the information to tell apart a school, their boss goes to prison. Unfortunately in the current-time US, as things are - nobody will be held accountable. :(

In an ideal world they would both be in prison regardless of who the bombs killed. Illegal war of aggression is a crime against humanity.
The other option is that this was done by Israel, and we know from Gaza that they actually target children for the Terror effect and because they see Muslims as "vermin" so don't really care that they're children.
I could totally see the Israeli military doing this on purpose "to break the spirit of Iranians" - I mean, the rest of the World has not punished Israel for doing exactly this in Gaza multiple times, so from that side they would get no downsides from committing more of such attrocities, whilst on the side of Israeli Public Opinion, given how widespread and normalized Racism is there (especially Islamophobia, with Muslims commonly described as "violent" and even "vermin"), they will probably get an uptick in public support from this.
My personal theories on this are that it was either some American military person choosing a target based on satellite imagery and mistakenly picking the set of "buildings with a large patio" which is the school rather than the IRGC base or the Israelis purposefully doing it because they can and for them all Iranians are "vermin" hence the young ones too are just more "vermin", not children.
I don't think the American Military is quite to the point of chosing to murder a school filled with children (though they have quite the track record from way back when they were droning Afghanistan of not caring all that much about large numbers of civilian casualties), but the Israeli Military have a lot of recent practice with purposefully targetting children of "vermin" races and are pretty much veterans at it.
I hate that it's so on-brand for the US to target a school.
Didn't America specialize in bombing weddings whilst Israel specialized in bombing schools?
...is it? Genuinely asking. I'm 40 and can't remember ever hearing about the US bombing a school.
The next time I hear someone say "thank you for your service" to a veteran I am going to fucking scream. That phrase always bothered me but this bombing has made it so much worse.
They're referring to how Americans love to shoot up schools. We have constant school shootings, it's only natural we'd take that next step to school bombings.
So far Obama has been pretty good at bombing schools. But that Trump guy might be the goat
Bombing schools prevents nuclear capability huh?
And to think the most recent recruiter for a defense contractor to email me about a job, didn’t like my encouragement for him to swallow a shotgun. Some people 😂
This president has done way worse to children then bombing them unfortunately.
Who one? The one in Mar a Lago or the one in Tel Aviv?
This was no accident.
There is no better way to create extremists than unjustified murder of their children.
There is no better way to keep a people subjugated than maintaining them in constant fear.
EEUU and Israel needs to keep breeding terrorists to oppress their citizens.
Wake the fuck up!!!
why bet on polymarket when you can just invest in kleenex and ky jelly due to the neocons and chicken hawks crawling out from under the rocks these next few weeks?
