What made you choose your Fediverse Instance?

Why did you choose your Fediverse Instance, does it have a bigger meaning than it was a bigger instance or was it for a certain reason? Did you have to be on your instance you chose?

when I started here there were not many people and only some instances were big enough to interact. Have you been to .ml? only crazy ppl. So I came to world and prayed for the best

[–] hanrahan@slrpnk.net 1 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

while there might be some crazy people like that man of them have different options to the status quo and provide me with food for further thought. That doesn't mean I agree with everything there, but that thay the same with any instance.

i find how we are in this world isn't because of the likes of the opinions on .ml bit the apathy and opinions of the average voter and citizen, so normal (as in under the bell curve) is the new crazy.

an example

Susan Sontag was asked what she had learned from the Holocaust, and she said that 10% of any population is cruel, no matter what, and that 10% is merciful, no matter what, and that the remaining 80% could be moved in either direction.” — Kurt Vonnegut

this is the US now for example...

i wanted an instance that wasn't defederated from them.

[–] TheHotze@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

Seconing this. Plus I didn't know that many instances, and was too lazy to change.

Your girlfriend is on the Instance or created the instance?

[–] meow@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 6 days ago

She is on it

[–] timestatic@feddit.org 2 points 6 days ago

Well the german feddit.de stopped working where I initially was after the reddit exodus thing. Feddit.org became the best successor. They have a sensible block list and a lot of german and european communities so I like it here. And I think the mod team is doing a pretty good job

Tee hee, funni name.

"Shit just works." Oh good! I like it when shit just works!

The server you're on!

Like how you're on infosec.pub, the OP is on break3.social, the community (subreddit equivalent) is on lemmy.world, and I'm on pawb.social. :3

More reliable than lemdro.id, European (low ping) and it isn't .ml or lemmygrad.

[–] ada@piefed.blahaj.zone 35 points 1 week ago

It would be weird to host an instance without using it...

I didn't give a shit

My account on the old nsfw stopped working because apparently someone shit the bed or stopped doing something or whatever

It's not something that I care about, so I just did whatever

I have no idea what instance I'm on

I don't even know what instances are, or what difference it makes

[–] bonenode@piefed.social 13 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

You know, I actually love reading this. People complain a lot about how complicated the fediverse/lemmy/whatever is and they cannot even sign up, yada yada. And yet here you are, not giving a damn about it all and still you manages to make an account and you are here. Kudos to you!

[–] Skavau@piefed.social 7 points 1 week ago (5 children)

You are on lemmy.world

You can see the instance others are on by the @ after their name. If they don't have one, they are local to you.

Very small blocked list and doesn't block NSFW. Users should make their own choices. Also awesome stats every month.

This is probably the first sharkey post I see on lemmy. It looks really good, nice.

I heard people I respect talk about it in ways I enjoyed :)

The public feed, rules, etc. also looked like a good match for me. And I'm absolutely grateful to be able to post from here!

[–] neidu3@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 week ago (5 children)

After reaching out and proving I was human, the admins agreed to activate my account manually so I didn't have to enter a valid email address.

[–] Cracks_InTheWalls@sh.itjust.works 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

HALT! Surprise mandatory sock inspection!

[–] neidu3@sh.itjust.works 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Best I can do at the moment

Still wearing my caterpillars

This will suffice. Carry on! :)

I needed to make a new account when lemm.ee shut down and feddit.uk was the first one that came to mind. I'm not even from the UK.

I migrated during Reddit's API debacle. I picked sh.itjust.works for several reasons:

  • No email required to sign up (at the time)
  • Hosted the only NonCredibleDefense community on Lemmy (at the time)
  • Had almost no defederated instances (at the time)
  • Consistent uptime (was 99% at the time and still not far off)
  • Hosted in Canada but accepting of US citizens
  • Powered by 98% renewable energy
  • TheDude abides

While some things have changed like defederating from more servers, it's left up to a vote by users of the server and the vote doesn't get proposed unless there's a good reason (such as a server being Nazi-friendly or constantly harassing/trolling users)

Dring the Reddit Migration, this was the first one I heard about, so I picked it. Haven't been bothered to change it since.
