What made you choose your Fediverse Instance?

Why did you choose your Fediverse Instance, does it have a bigger meaning than it was a bigger instance or was it for a certain reason? Did you have to be on your instance you chose?

Well the german feddit.de stopped working where I initially was after the reddit exodus thing. Feddit.org became the best successor. They have a sensible block list and a lot of german and european communities so I like it here. And I think the mod team is doing a pretty good job

[–] cepelinas@sopuli.xyz 1 points 5 hours ago

More reliable than lemdro.id, European (low ping) and it isn't .ml or lemmygrad.

[–] ContactClosure@lemmus.org 4 points 8 hours ago

I didn't know about instances, it was the first one that popped up. 🤦

[–] guynamedzero@piefed.zeromedia.vip 2 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

I’m hosting my own, I don’t wanna have to rely on someone else to do a good job for me

[–] fedicate@break3.social 1 points 2 hours ago

Amazing choice, it's what we've ended up doing with break3.social and social.fedicate.org our Sharkey instances but running more instances is the goal with Lemmy or Piefed in the future.

Glad to see others host there own instance

[–] pomegranatefern@sh.itjust.works 4 points 19 hours ago

I was looking over instances sorted by uptime, saw one that had high uptime, a lot of users, and a literal promise that shit will just work in its name. I did a bit of scoping to see that it was easy to view communities across all instances from SJW and figured, fuck it, seems like as good a choice as any.

[–] Atomic@sh.itjust.works 4 points 21 hours ago

I picked one at random. Then I quickly realised .ml is nuts so I picked a different random one. How do I feel about about my instance? No strong feelings one way or the other. It's ok I guess

[–] rockandsock@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

I just picked the biggest one this time. I've had 3 others shut down on me since I've been using Lemmy.

[–] fedicate@break3.social 0 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

That is understandable, would you not want to run your own to make sure it can't shutdown without you knowing?

[–] rockandsock@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

Maybe at some point but I don't have the time or mental bandwidth for that right now.

[–] ada@piefed.blahaj.zone 33 points 1 day ago

It would be weird to host an instance without using it...

I didn't give a shit

My account on the old nsfw stopped working because apparently someone shit the bed or stopped doing something or whatever

It's not something that I care about, so I just did whatever

I have no idea what instance I'm on

I don't even know what instances are, or what difference it makes

[–] bonenode@piefed.social 12 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

You know, I actually love reading this. People complain a lot about how complicated the fediverse/lemmy/whatever is and they cannot even sign up, yada yada. And yet here you are, not giving a damn about it all and still you manages to make an account and you are here. Kudos to you!

[–] Skavau@piefed.social 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

You are on lemmy.world

You can see the instance others are on by the @ after their name. If they don't have one, they are local to you.

maintainer is from my country, rules are good and reasonable, nice local content, no local drama

The other furry instance shut down. 😞

[–] AstroLightz@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Dring the Reddit Migration, this was the first one I heard about, so I picked it. Haven't been bothered to change it since.

Supporting Canadian because I am Canadian.

[–] ageedizzle@piefed.ca 2 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Same except I prefer piefed to lemmy so I’m on piefed.ca

[–] sveltecider@lemmy.ca 2 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

what even is the difference idek at this point

[–] ageedizzle@piefed.ca 2 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

For me the biggest difference is that it organizes different crossposts into a single unit. So if the same link is posted in several different communities you can see the comments for each post in the same comment section. Whereas on lemmy you might see duplicate posts with the same link and the comments would be scattered between them.

Piefed also has emoji reactions (kind of like Discord) whereas lemmy just has upvotes/downvotes

[–] sveltecider@lemmy.ca 1 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Well time to wait however long to get approved.

[–] ageedizzle@piefed.ca 1 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Welcome to the dark side

Note that these features aren't always supported on every mobile app. For cross posts I recommend trying out the Mlem app. Interstellar works too for that but it's not as nice of a user experience in my opinion. Emojis aren't supported in any of the major apps yet (at least not that I know of) but if you're a big emojis fan and want to see them then you can use the mobile website and it should work.

Have fun!

[–] sveltecider@lemmy.ca 1 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

I already use mlem for lemmy

I wanted a place for the digital nomad and travel niche, so I made it. I'm hoping to have resources like maps, tips, and other things like blogs

check out the communities https://piefed.keyboardvagabond.com/communities?home_select=local

there's also [pixelfed](https://pixel/ fed.keyboardvagabobd.com) and mastodon, though it's been a bit harder to get them as full with content

[–] 100_kg_90_de_belin@feddit.it 3 points 1 day ago

It's located in my country.

[–] LeapSecond@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Very small blocked list and doesn't block NSFW. Users should make their own choices. Also awesome stats every month.

This is probably the first sharkey post I see on lemmy. It looks really good, nice.

I heard people I respect talk about it in ways I enjoyed :)

The public feed, rules, etc. also looked like a good match for me. And I'm absolutely grateful to be able to post from here!

[–] mnemonicmonkeys@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I migrated during Reddit's API debacle. I picked sh.itjust.works for several reasons:

  • No email required to sign up (at the time)
  • Hosted the only NonCredibleDefense community on Lemmy (at the time)
  • Had almost no defederated instances (at the time)
  • Consistent uptime (was 99% at the time and still not far off)
  • Hosted in Canada but accepting of US citizens
  • Powered by 98% renewable energy
  • TheDude abides

While some things have changed like defederating from more servers, it's left up to a vote by users of the server and the vote doesn't get proposed unless there's a good reason (such as a server being Nazi-friendly or constantly harassing/trolling users)

[–] Lor@mander.xyz 3 points 1 day ago

i chose mander.xyz because they do not de-federate or block any instances (other than threads) - I would like the opportunity to do my own censoring. That said, it is a great instance with good up time and hosted communities. Science FTW. A++

[–] BradleyUffner@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

It was the first one I saw that didn't have a "silly" name.

[–] neidu3@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 day ago (4 children)

After reaching out and proving I was human, the admins agreed to activate my account manually so I didn't have to enter a valid email address.

Slrpnk was down for a few days and the admin was super transparent about what was going on (iirc, they were on a business trip and something happened to their home server that needed a physical button press). I was happy with that level of communication, and occasional down time is good for getting out and touching grass.

edit: I was on sdf before, but they're a lot less transparent about maintenance issues.
