Lucky for her, she can afford to leave. Most people do not have that financial luxury.

[–] JillSteinsPuckeredAnus@lemmy.world 31 points 2 weeks ago (7 children)

I left with $10k and 3 suitcases.

[–] Chozo@fedia.io 48 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Nice, so I'm just 2 suitcases and $10k away from renouncing my citizenship!

No. You're 1-2 years of visa applications and paperwork and job searching away from deciding to sell all your possessions and make the move.

You wont be able to renounce until you've gained citizenship in your destination country, which takes about 5 years usually.

[–] Snowcano@startrek.website 21 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

You should do an AMA. Not even kidding.

Which is more than many can afford.

[–] JillSteinsPuckeredAnus@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I sold everything I owned online marketplace, down to mugs and dishes.

[–] zebidiah@lemmy.ca 12 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

That's about $30-40k more than most people have.... Before student loans

Edit: I ain't hating, good for you for making it out! It's an incredibly difficult thing to do, to uproot your entire life and move to a whole new country, and especially if it's not an English speaking one.

[–] Pyr_Pressure@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I mean, what they going to do if you take out a 10K loan and leave it all behind? Does US debt follow you to other countries?

[–] ThunderQueen@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Yes and many countries have extradition policies with the us. In order to renounce your citizenship, it costs like $2000 now. So it is double taxes otherwise in lots of places.

Most countries you'd want to go to have a tax agreement with the US to negate the effects of double taxation.

...so what was in the 3 suitcases?

[–] ramble81@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Do tell. How did you do it and how are you doing?

[–] JillSteinsPuckeredAnus@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

10 years. It was a lot of paperwork. Got a job in new country, built a new life.

There are a lot of valid excuses why one cannot emmigrate, but "I'm not filthy rich" is not one of them. Some people use that theory to assuage the cognitive dissonance. In other words: emigrating is a fuck load of work, and it's easier for many to simply lie to themselves that they need to be filthy rich.

i knew someone in college 10 years ago, was starting the process after finishing degree, will try to get into grad school in canada or elsewhere, he had advantage though his wife had some residency in canada.

[–] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.world 0 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Love to know where I can retire for $10k and three suitcases. And a spouse and children.

[–] JillSteinsPuckeredAnus@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Notice that I didn't say that I retired with $10k and three suitcases.

[–] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.world -2 points 2 weeks ago

So it's not practical advice.

It would be funny if the US lost it's main propaganda machine, Hollywood, as actors move away.

It won't happen, but it would be funny.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

thier propaganda machine is mostly right wing propaganda; copaganda and military propaganda to keep the population complacent, and hollywood movies/shows are part of that. reinforcing christian values through esoteric shows like supernatural , other god related shows. MALE LEADS, as a military leader or groups.

Can’t blame her a bit. I’d bail if I could.

[–] Zizzy@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Same, ive been looking at ways and trying but im an "unskilled" worker and have very little money.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 2 weeks ago

if you dont have a degree, might want to work towards and look for a grad school in other countries. during obamas era i knew someone in college looking at grad school in canada after he would finish a degree, although i remember he mentioned his wife had canadian ties/citizenship.

[–] Pyr_Pressure@lemmy.ca 22 points 2 weeks ago

Must be nice to be rich and able to leave the mess whenever it gets uncomfortable

[–] Krankenwagen@lemmy.world 19 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

Is a born American with huge amounts of money and a platform. Instead of fighting for her country/values, she chooses to flee. I know it's the safe choice, but man, so many Americans are cowards when it comes down to it.

[–] myspecialpurpose@lemmy.ca 30 points 2 weeks ago

And do what? Yell at people on twitter? Make a “powerful” statement during an acceptance speech? This country is so fucked and anyone that thinks we’re coming back is delusional. We would need to imprison the vast majority of republicans in office. Even with that, it’s corporate money that runs this country and they would just get replaced and voted in by our idiot population. We are not where we are because of one administration, this is decades in the making. If I had the money and 7 children or however many she has that weren’t white, you can bet I’d be taking them somewhere they could grow up without the fear of being picked up by the Gestapo for being brown.

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 12 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Even SunTsu says that fleeing is the best option sometimes.

[–] Juice@midwest.social 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

He describes a feint, an offensive retreat. I don't think Ang is pretending to leave just to make the USA follow her into a trap.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Gods the history would be funny if she does though

[–] Jax@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago

Sorry to burst your bubble guys, but Jolie is a way too old to matter to the Epstein class.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 4 points 2 weeks ago

only fools would stay and be slaughtered bya fascist regime. intellectuals and rich people(that are not supporters) are often the first targets

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 weeks ago

Instead of fighting for her country/values How. a Lemmy account?

[–] boaratio@lemmy.world 17 points 2 weeks ago

Must but nice to be able to afford doing that.

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 15 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I'm not gonna blame her for something I'd do in a heartbeat if I could.

[–] Nomorereddit@lemmy.today -2 points 2 weeks ago

Be a narcissist that buys an 8th home?

[–] switcheroo@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Wish I could just LEAVE because things are awful. Unfortunately we have to stay and suffer and those who have the ability to influence flee...

[–] doingthestuff@lemy.lol 0 points 2 weeks ago

Are there people listening to her!

[–] Snapz@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

Your country looks a lot like your Dad

[–] Nomorereddit@lemmy.today 6 points 2 weeks ago

So she buys her 8th home abroad. Enjoys it for a little bit, then comes back. Like every rich person fake leaving.

[–] roserose56@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

When you have money, it's easy to do say and do stuff.

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 weeks ago

still better than not doing it, though

[–] Glytch@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

ITT: people vastly overestimating the influence of an actress's "platform".

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca -3 points 2 weeks ago

She probably doesn't recognize 1/3 of her kids and half her ex-husbands.
