Russian authorities have begun restricting access to Telegram, one of the country’s most popular social media apps, as the government continues to push everyday Russians toward its own tightly controlled alternatives to foreign tech platforms.

On Tuesday, the government said it was restricting access to Telegram for the “protection of Russian citizens,” accusing the app of refusing to block content authorities consider “criminal and terrorist.”

Russia’s telecommunications regulator Roskomnadzor said in a statement that it would continue to restrict the operation of the Telegram messenger “until violations of Russian law are eliminated.”

This is a good reminder for people to run Snowflake relay if they can. Just installing the relay extensions is all you need to do.

I've had the extension for a bit now, and I usually get a few connections the moment I open my browser. I quickly forgot about having it installed, and it never gave me any trouble.

Snowflake allows you to connect to the Tor network in places where Tor is blocked by routing your connection through volunteer proxies located in uncensored countries.

Similar to VPNs, which help users bypass Internet censorship, Snowflake disguises your Internet activity as though you’re making a video or voice call, making you less detectable to Internet censors.

A logical next step in Russia's descent into the worst kind of police state. It will never quite be totalitarian, that era is over and anyway the Kremlin is too cynical and incompetent to actually control people's thoughts. The model is obviously China. China has successfully locked down its internet and every dictator in the world has noticed.

The whole world is going that direction. Russia, north korea and china are leading the way, wester countries are more sly and subtle in how to do things, but america and UK are going the same direction.

OK but I tend to think that this kind of hopeless cynicism kinda risks being self-fulfilling. There are fundamental differences between Russia and the West, ordinary people (especially in Western countries) do have some agency, and nothing about the future is set in stone.

Oh that's just the delusion of freedom. USA is great at selling that. We will still fight but accepting the truth is always the sane approach compared to hopeful optimism .

Russia and china and easterns are more straight forward. "We don't want you to have privacy and control" Western countries wrap it around a populistic shiny wrapper. "This is the land of freedom, you are encouraged to have privacy and controll, unless you actually try to do so" they also let people play in the dirt unless they are doing something serious and pose some threat. But eastern governments are much less tolerant. You will be punished even for minor inconvenience.
