In case you need a reminder (discuss.tchncs.de)
submitted 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) by CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de to c/memes@lemmy.world

Edit, since people are now seeing this post who did not see the the reason for it:

At the time of creating and posting this, there was an account that was created using a well known username and spamming extremly transphobic hate posts. Some users were starting to interact with this very obvious troll, so I thought it might be a good idea to generally remind people how to treat these trolls. This is not about some light hearted banter or good faith jokes, this is about trolls that are truly only about spreading hate.

Instance block chatgptjailbreak.tech. Another set of problems solved.

[–] GoldenDeLorean@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Could someone please explain how to block an instance from boost for Lemmy, or if I had to do it from lemmy.org?

[–] adhd_traco@piefed.social 4 points 2 weeks ago

Sure. Click your profile top right -> settings -> Blocks -> Block instance

[–] Zagam@piefed.social 22 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Hey discord, my age verification is that I remember when trolls were named after people that went trolling for fights and flame wars by leaving a trail of bait-posts.

Either way though, don't feed the trolls and stop making stupid people famous.

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 5 points 2 weeks ago

this is the only definition of an internet troll I know

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

stop making stupid people famous.

um, i would like to apply for an exception please. some day i would like to be famous for a piece of art i make eventually and i am very, very stupid.

[–] Zagam@piefed.social 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Ha. Fair enough but if you make art, thats not the kind of stupid I mean,

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

oh it's a worse stupid. there was a dude who once put a bunch of oversized beach umbrellas every 50 meters along the spanish riviera for like 20 miles (i think i'm remembering the story right) and it was gorgeous and everything and a beautiful work of art until the wind picked up and not all of the umbrellas were 100% solidly anchored because beach wind and so they started rolling down the coast and like those things are sharp and if i recall he got charged with involuntary environmental ecoterrorism and i've always kind of been inspired by that

i'm thinking something with kudzu

[–] Zagam@piefed.social 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Thats fucking awesome. Its like a cross of Andy Goldsworthy, Christo, and the Cat in the Hat.

If you ever need a hand, I'm right here.

That person really has a hate boner for the 2 people they are impersonating.

[–] ameancow@lemmy.world 25 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

Lemmy has about 100 active users and seven of them are 50 of them.

[–] Mac@mander.xyz 5 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (3 children)

I actively run 12 accounts, myself! You wouldn't believe how much self-arguing we do!

this is a joke

[–] ameancow@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Okay but do you ever lose an argument?

You’d really think someone would do that? Just go on the internet and be an asshole?

[–] Una@europe.pub 9 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Can I eat the trolls? 🥺

[–] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 14 points 2 weeks ago

I won't kinkshame.

[–] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

You can. But it hurts to pass their little tummy gems. Those don't digest.

[–] BillyClark@piefed.social 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Don't feed the trolls. Report, block, move on

Very good advice. But if you have some sort of personality defect that makes you occasionally engage with trolls like I do, here is some additional advice:

Make your comment less effort than the trolls. Don't argue every point. Focus on their weakest point.

Essentially, if you can't resist responding to a troll because you're an idiot like me, make it like one short sentence where you point out their biggest mistake, and then if they respond to you and you respond back, keep doing that and never let them change the subject. At least you're causing them to waste effort.

famine is not a moderation policy

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 5 points 2 weeks ago

There's only so many trolls on the internet because of people bridging their network. If there were no bridges, the trolls would have no where to live. 😌

[–] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Countertrolling is more fun, though :(

[–] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 12 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

You can't countertroll someone who's just spitting hate.

[–] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

You vastly underestimate my abilities

[–] tomiant@piefed.social 4 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Have you got any examples? Because in my experience a lot of the time people who are block happy just happen to have extreme views they refuse to have challenged and rather just stick their heads in the sand so they don't ever have to entertain the possibility that they're wrong.

Blocking just creates echo chambers, leading to group think effects and fanaticism.

[–] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

https://t.feddit.org/modlog?other_person_id=13878687

I did not make this post out of nothing. The accout with that modlog was created and just started to spam maximally offensive transphobic shitposts over multiple communities. And because people started to comment and argue with that account, I felt some should be reminded to not feed trolls.

[–] cepelinas@sopuli.xyz 3 points 2 weeks ago

I saw another account from the same instance spamming porn, it probably is one trolls self hosted instance the instance should probably be banned.

Yeah, even in instances where one side is clearly right, it's still important to be challenged often enough to know exactly why it's right. As soon as you're comfortable enough with "knowing" something is right without being able to explain why, you risk believing things that "feel" correct but might not be. You don't have to actually argue with trolls, but you should still see and process their arguments enough to formulate a counterargument in your head that would stand up to a hypothetical person arguing in good faith.

[–] ageedizzle@piefed.ca 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I agree with you wholeheartedly. But in this case I one of the two trolls was spamming pornographic images, in which case I don’t think theres any issue with blocking

[–] Signtist@bookwyr.me 2 points 2 weeks ago

No! Argue with the porn! Haha, yeah, definitely block that kind of crap.

[–] Siethron@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

What if their untrue statement is purely for a really good pun?

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago (10 children)

If you block a troll, then you will no longer be able to report or monitor their bad behavior. So the problem isn't solved.

[–] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 10 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

That's why the steps are ordered this way. First report, then block. And if you want to, you can view the reported post while logged out, check modlogs, etc.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I meant future bad behavior. A lot of people view blocking as a last resort and I think that's a valid viewpoint.

[–] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 2 weeks ago

Just read my post text. This is about accoints that usually should get banned outright anyway.

[–] Flames5123@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 weeks ago

I block for my mental health. Bad behavior is for the moderators to worry about. I got enough shit going on in my life to be a vigilante on lemmy.

[–] Rooster326@programming.dev 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

How does block work on Lemmy?

On Reddit you used to be able to block to filter out the spammers but they changed it so it didn't block their posts.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

On lemmy, if you block a user, you will not see any post or comment they make.

I won't feed the trolls, but you (moderation) will in part need to remove them from under the bridges and banish them from the town squares. You may even have to remove them from your own ranks.

[–] Nomorereddit@lemmy.today 3 points 2 weeks ago

But op will starve!

[–] other_cat@piefed.zip 3 points 2 weeks ago

The irony of people arguing with OP.
