I adopted a senior shih tzu that was extremely aggressive and blind from cataracts. the person holding my future dog was at a pet store about to consult to see what the pet store can do about finding her a new home. my mom was passing by and commented how cute the dog was, and the woman asked if she wanted her.

apparently, she was bouncing around home after home because of her aggression, the second to last family abandoned her with church people that didn't have the resources to help her after two months.

when I got her, she was covered in knots everywhere because local groomers could not handle her aggression and would quit midway. hell, there were 2 moments I was ready to give her up... I was tired of the constant biting and blood she was drawing from me. however, I am so glad I persevered.

if you are reading this and have the capacity to not give up when working with an aggressive dog, please do.

I will not lie, the road to where she is now was very hard and difficult. she was always biting me, cutting my skin and making me bleed, anger management issues like crazy at first. she is still aggressive and doesnt like to be touched at all, but it is absolutely nowhere around where she was before I gave her stability and I was able to get her eye surgery to fix her vision. now that she sees, she is so much more confident and actually allows me to pet her sometimes

My late boy Jake was also scheduled to be put down within 12 hours when we made the call to adopt him. He traveled for 8-ish hours from NM to CO in a van to get to us… then took the biggest fucking shit on his first walk with us.

We were used to like, medium dogs, and he was an 80-lb pit bull and pointer mix. An immovable object if he wanted to be. An unstoppable force because he just couldn’t help himself.

My husband and I looked at the shit, look at each other… and said “Ok, buckle in.”

9 years later, when Jake turned 13, we said our tearful goodbyes as he wagged his tail and ate his last meal, a bacon cheeseburger.

I love you, Jake. I still think of you.

Same, we got a rescue that was at a kill shelter in texas and brought to the east coast to be adopted. I'm not gonna lie, he was a lot for a couple months, chewed a lot of things he shouldn't have, but now he's a sweetie and knows the routine and what's ok. He's an 80 lb chocolate lab mix and currently bundled up on the couch living the life.

It's the crime of living in a capitalistic society. The only thing that anyone recognizes is money. And stray animals being kept alive costs money. And space to store them costs money. And people to volunteer costs money.

Without money, the institutions collapse and it's seen as acceptable to purge anything that was causing the system to lose money.

Empathy, like SS Musk says, is a "weakness" that capitalism has been purging from the system for centuries.

Its a simple logistics issue. The sheer number of abandoned pets makes keeping them all alive a financial and spatial impossibility. Each shelter is a microcosm basicly on its own within a set region. Some regions are high birthrate zones for strays, as well as hotbeds for abuse. In a perfect world these problems would not exist and every animal would have a caring home. Sadly our world is anything but perfect

Yesterday I started to try not murder animals. I've been vegan for a few years now, but not murdering animals felt so good! Today I didn't murder any animals. I'm going to try tomorrow.

My Prius Does use up energy from dead dinosaurs and plants. So hopefully that doesn't count?

But yeah, not a single puppy. Last week it was a puppy left and right. And you feel bad, specially cuz you're vegan. But this week, yeah not even one puppy.
