Amongst a smattering of largely ineffectual feel-good changes, there is a lot of horror from this government - in laws as well as words shaping our social landscape.

It boggles my mind that in two short years we seem to have stepped back into the 80's for race relations, social policy, opinions on law and order, and on matters of the environment.

It's a disgrace.

I do hope, come November, that enough victorious voters of this round are shamed enough to recognise their error - and that enough of those that didn't vote because "it wouldn't count" get up and make a damned difference.

Greetings from Finland (literally the other side of the globe).

We went from a solid social-democratic government (and thank doG we had them during Covid, they managed it near perfectly) to an unholy coalition of neoliberals, conservatives and fascists, pardon me, far-right populists.
The results are palpable after a bit over 2 years now; esp. low and no income people are getting fucked over hard, misbehaving fascists make the news, while prestige projects cost a multitude of what was saved from the poor.

And of course they're harping on immigration, too, although Finland really does not have that many to start with.
But tbh I have no idea how the new regime affects our own indigenous people.

Thankfully this is still a well functioning democratic state and you can't just willy-nilly "executive order" things.

We don't have the greatest controls here. A large amount of law passing has been passed 'under urgency' for the weakest of reasons - let's you bypass most of the debate and public opinion. This government has no shame (not that a sense of propriety should be the control we count on to rein in political ambition and ideology... or possibly obligations to donors... ahem).

Yeah despite having lots of neoliberals (pro business basically) and other forms of *cough* conservatism, people still believe in the democratic process and regulations. It's not getting better though, there's a plague going 'round the globe...

OMG it sucks that NZ Aotearoa voted in these fucking colonizing assholes that seem hell bent on taking away Māori rights. When the next election??

He’s a cunt. Generally, however, house spiders are good.

Yes, we hate him.

Yes the current status quo that favors me so much is actually good for everyone else, don't let anyone say otherwise okay

Its always the old white men! Mate just retire already , seriously boomers are not fit for any job.

[–] taldennz@lemmy.nz 5 points 1 day ago

Please don't lump all 'old white men' in with that arsehole.

You'll hurt my feelings.

It's always the old white men!

Here's the mindblowing part:

On Feb 5, Mr Seymour, who himself is Maori, told those assembled at Waitangi that colonisation had been a net positive for the indigenous people of New Zealand.

[–] taldennz@lemmy.nz 8 points 1 day ago

Mind-blowing indeed... since he managed to overlook all those deaths, the loss agency in their governance, the inequalities of wealth, education and health, the fact that home ownership looks likely to become a statistical anomaly for Maori.

...and you know, let's remove use of their language and references to the treaty from education...
