US Vice President JD Vance endured a chorus of “boos” as US athletes began their march at the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony, after Israeli athletes faced the same unwarm welcome.

Good. I hope he is made unwelcome everywhere he goes for the rest of his life.

[–] ToTheGraveMyLove@sh.itjust.works 143 points 3 months ago

This is what I like to hear.

"Stern warning".

Booo! Oh wait, you're serious, let me boo even harder.

BOOOOOOOOO!

[–] ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one 30 points 3 months ago (1 children)

“Why won’t the stern warning stop the booing? It will surely stop the fascists.”

[–] dellish@lemmy.world 9 points 3 months ago

Perhaps they should try a strongly worded letter next time? I hear that does wonders.

If greet we must, then this is how we must greet Nazis and Zionists.

It doesn't make up for genocide and attacking immigrants, but at least the war criminals' loss of narrative is out in the open.

Guess they kept people from bringing rotten fruit and vegetables in to throw at him.

[–] crank0271@lemmy.world 56 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Did he even say "thank you"?

The the international Olympics committee is an absolute joke. They claim they don't want to be political and that's why Israel is allowed to compete and expect not to get backlash.

They have to be taking bribes, that's the only reason they would be making these otherwise insane decisions.

Why is israel allowed to play but not russia again?

[–] KiloGex@lemmy.world 16 points 3 months ago (5 children)

Russia was caught doping. It has nothing to do with politics.

Going to watch the opening ceremony when I get home. I'm glad that it sounds like the boos were directed at JD Vance instead of the athletes. Fuck that guy. I don't know what he expected to happen. That would suck to be training to be a top-tier athlete and your country does something shitty and you get boo'd for it.

[–] lividweasel@lemmy.world 39 points 3 months ago (4 children)

I’m watching it on delay right now, and they just came in. The athletes got a great cheer, but that quickly switched to boos when they showed him. It was perfectly done.

Its quite cold out right now, but those boos just warmed me right up. I'm surprised he didnt try to have Usha stay home so he could take Erikkka though. Maybe listen to some Coldplay.

Just Dumb's oligarch convoy required 14 airplanes and 100 vehicles. WTF, how much did that shit cost?

[–] Atelopus-zeteki@fedia.io 14 points 3 months ago

Boooooooooooooo!

[–] EndlessNightmare@reddthat.com 13 points 3 months ago (3 children)

It's not like we can actually do anything about them. Booing at least makes us feel good for a brief moment.

People are allowed to vent, and it is healthy to do so.

This genuinely makes me happy

[–] thorhop@sopuli.xyz 12 points 3 months ago

OoOoooOoo. Stern warning.

As an Usian, keep it up...

[–] SocialMediaRefugee@lemmy.world 11 points 3 months ago

Lucky it was just "boo"

[–] KiloGex@lemmy.world 9 points 3 months ago

We deserve it.

[–] Bloomcole@lemmy.world 8 points 3 months ago (1 children)

So? They are still allowed to participate.
And none of the EU or other vassal states will do anything against them, despite what the population wants or thinks.

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago

I think they should treat US athletes like the did clean Russian athletes.

Allow them to compete, but not as representatives of the US.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 7 points 3 months ago (1 children)
[–] ramenshaman@lemmy.world 19 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I mean, I think Russia has been banned for a while now.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 6 points 3 months ago (6 children)

I actually had not realized that. fine to me if the ban hammer swings this way to but maybe let the athletes compete for other countries.

[–] deacon@lemmy.world 14 points 3 months ago (1 children)

They usually let them compete under the Olympic flag I believe

They weren't banned for the Ukraine thing, but for doping. There are Russian athletes that compete under ROC in Olympics now.

Edit-well, looks like I was wrong. The ban was rescinded in '22, than there were banned again for the Ukraine invasion. And now some athletes compete under AIN, Athletes from Individual Neutral Athletes
