Aukus would've been a shit deal for aus even if we got the subs. The fact that we're not getting them is just perfect. We should drop ties with the fickle US and strengthen partnerships with reliable defence partners such as Japan and France.

Honestly, why wouldn't he?
Frankly, because Australia has things that the USA does not have and really needs. Australia is a stable and reliable political friend in a region of the globe that is close enough to the antipode of mainland USA. Our proximity and unused land affords our US allies with space and privacy to operate with relative comfort. Their bases in Australia also have much shorter logistic chains to operate compared with other remote locales like islands as well.
The USA would be impacted militarily if they lost Australia as an ally. Not irrevocably, they'd get by. But it would cost them a lot more than the simple civility and respect it takes to maintain their relationship with Australia.
Neither nations really needs the other. Our partnership has been convenient for both of us, and it really would be a shame for both nations if that partnership were to lapse.
Nothing you said is untrue, but the topic is how trump views Australia, and I think you're giving him far too much credit. I'd like to see Australian leadership pull back from the US or at least not bend over to the imbecile American president.
Not kowtowing to Trump is not the same as ending our relationship with the US.

Why is everyone jumping on this. It's a congressional research report. It's not even spearhead by a particular party or politician.
It's simple report that says we're not making enough subs so instead sell some b-21 raiders to the Aussies.
I'm surprised no one even saw that part.
