At first I thought it was only Java edition but now it seems that all platforms will have it. We have to upload things like Digital ID or other methods to Yoti, a third party company, to verify our age if we want to use social features such as the chat. This means if we don't even in single player the chat will be removed. Then we can't even use coords or commands in Java single player. As of now it is unclear how and when exactly they will add this but they said on their website it is next month sometime. Not sure if it will be online only and if it will be a certain update or all updates. I doubt mods will be able to get around this. Mojang will probably tell them to be removed.

*UK only? Unless something has changed.

[–] me_myself_and_I@lemmy.world 12 points 4 days ago

Yes, sorry should have said. UK only

[–] RegularJoe@lemmy.world 11 points 4 days ago (1 children)

According to this,

https://www.sportskeeda.com/minecraft/news-minecraft-introduces-age-verification-social-features-uk

However, Mojang has stated that even if players choose not to verify, it will not affect any previous purchases, entitlements, achievements, or gameplay history. It will also not impact the ability to play and purchase games, making it a requirement strictly for social interaction within the ecosystem.

[–] me_myself_and_I@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Nonetheless, it will impact useability of the chat in single player mode. Which is very important for things like commands and coordinates.

[–] TheLeadenSea@sh.itjust.works 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

You can't even use commands? That's not a social feature.

[–] me_myself_and_I@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

The chat will most likely be disabled if you don't do age verification. Thus you can't put commands in the chat. Even in single player.

[–] TheLeadenSea@sh.itjust.works 8 points 4 days ago (1 children)

They have the ability to enable you to open the chat on singleplayer, and if it's a command let you do it, but block anything that doesn't start with a / or that starts with /whisper from being sent to servers. It's not all or nothing. Although knowing Mojang I don't have great faith in them.

[–] Fiery@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 4 days ago

That's gonna be impossible to block, as plugins can just add their own commands /msg /send /w /etc. So this will either fall on the plugin developers having to 'mark' their custom commands, be very impossible to enforce or command usage will be blocked

[–] TheLeadenSea@sh.itjust.works 10 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Ah yes, let's add age censorship for social feature such as chat on a game targeted towards children /s

First chat censorship and now this, fuck Mojang honestly

[–] EarMaster@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I am pretty sure Mojang wouldn't do this if not forced by law to do so. So it you want to "fuck" someone do it on the UK government…

[–] TheLeadenSea@sh.itjust.works -1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

So disobey the law. If everyone disobeys it en masse and people refuse to enforce it it won't have any power. But yes, the UK government is also pretty bad lately

[–] EarMaster@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Why would the UK "refuse to enforce it"?

[–] CameronDev@programming.dev 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Honestly, age verification for chat in a game targeted to children makes sense, but in the other direction...

[–] cactusupyourbutt@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

scuse me, Im a 30 yo guy playing with similar old friends, Id like to use chat as well

[–] CameronDev@programming.dev 1 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I don't mean 30yo's can't use chat, you just can't use chat to talk to 14yo's. There would be a virtual dystopian age wall that separates the olds from the youngs. Like Logans Run, once you turn 18 you get tossed in with the olds. :D (in case it's not clear, very much tongue in cheek, I don't want this).

But let's be real, none of these laws are gonna stop pedos grooming kids, or keep kids safe, it's all just a giant waste of time. I'm sure you and your mates will either verify, or just use a different platform for chat that doesn't require verification.

[–] Luminous5481@anarchist.nexus 8 points 4 days ago

I wouldn't worry too much about that, because I imagine it won't be long until a mod comes out that adds the chat back in, like they did to disable the chat reporting back when Mojang thought they were going to police speech.

I can't find any reliable information about this. I have the email which they sent to my second account (which I let my son use while supervised)

The email I got was about restricting communication on the Xbox app such as unknown players, discord, steaming, etc. but I don't have any email specifying what changes will be in Minecraft itself. It said games will function as normal but the restrictions are specifically on Xbox.

The articles I find online seem to be quoting parts of the Xbox email. If anybody can find an article refeerencing a solid source please do share.

[–] me_myself_and_I@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Someone did link it in one of the first comments I think. Maybe they took it down? I looked on the website but I couldn't find it either.

[–] Digestive_Biscuit@feddit.uk 2 points 2 days ago

Oh yes I've just found that. The article seems consistent with the Xbox email I received. I'm guessing the article is weirdly spinning this from a Minecraft perspective when it's probably it's Minecraft and every other game on Xbox.

Other than being required to have an Xbox account I don't use it. I'm happy not verifying if it's only Xbox which is limited.

[–] Allero@lemmy.today 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Pretty sure pirated Minecraft will still have all that. The more reasons to switch to the dark side...

[–] me_myself_and_I@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I don't play that version plus you run the risk of not being able to use modern updates.

[–] xianjam@programming.dev 5 points 3 days ago

Minecraft is insanely popular. Even if they use advanced DRM, someone will find a way to crack it.

[–] Allero@lemmy.today 1 points 3 days ago

For all I know, all modern versions are available

[–] TheLeadenSea@sh.itjust.works 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

So what if Mojang says to remove the mods? They probably also wanted to the remove chat filtering mods to be removed and yet they still widely exist. Mods will be able to fix this, have hope.

[–] me_myself_and_I@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

They could force websites to take down those mods. We will have to wait and see. I am sure there will be work arounds and loopholes.

[–] AndyMFK@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Lmao, under what jurisdiction?

Microsoft have no power over what other websites host

[–] me_myself_and_I@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The British Government as I said in my post. They have the power to make Microsoft and Mojang do anything they want.

[–] AndyMFK@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The British government have no jurisdiction over websites hosted outside the UK.

[–] me_myself_and_I@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

They are not forcing people outside of the UK to do age verification. However, they are allowed to do that in the UK. Please reread what I wrote. All people IN THE UK must do age verification. Mojang have agreed to comply with the British government. So we don't have a choice.

[–] AndyMFK@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I'm talking about mods that could allow running commands. Please re-read this comment chain.

Mods hosted on websites not based in the UK cannot be taken down by the UK government.

So yes, people in the UK have to abide by the age verification ( if they want social features, so you do have a choice). But people in the UK can also download and install any mod they want.

Age verification sucks, but at this point in time all we know is that it will be required for social features. Running commands, which seems to be your main concern, is not a social feature

[–] me_myself_and_I@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Mojang will prevent those mods from being visible in the UK the same way that Imajur is not available in the UK without VPNs.

[–] AndyMFK@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 3 days ago

Again, Mojang has zero control over what websites host. And the British government has zero control over what websites host in other countries.

Yes the government can try to block access to certain websites, but as you've started, a VPN is an easy way to get around that.

But also if you think Minecraft mods are high up on the government's radar, you're not really thinking clearly.

Like, think it through... If I have a website that runs on server in Switzerland, serving a Minecraft mod, how the hell would Mojang know about it? How the hell are they gonna stop me? They can't and they would be foolish to try. The British government can't shut it down, they have no jurisdiction. Any attempts to try and block the UK population from accessing it would be thwarted by a VPN.

So while I agree the age verification stuff is stupid. You're assuming it will prevent you from being able to use commands (highly unlikely), and your assuming Mojang will somehow take down websites they have no control over to prevent mods from changing this? And you're also assuming the UK governments will care enough about Minecraft mods to block access to mod websites?

You're making a lot of assumptions and literally none of them make any sense

[–] me_myself_and_I@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The chat will be disabled if you do not do age verification. That prevents the ability to use commands. How else can I explain it? And yes mods can be removed by the government and by the studios themselves such as the infamous hot coffee mod for GTA 5 from Rockstar or various modded versions from Nintendo games like emulation. The mods only stay up as long as Mojang or Microsoft do not send a cease and disist order. In fact, a quick google search shows that many mods got banned on Curse Forge for going against the terms of service from Mojang and Microsoft. Such as mods featuring guns or content they deem to adult oriented. They also have a profanity filter that they implimented recently to censor things. You are clearly just trying to argue here so I am not going to continue this conversation.

[–] AndyMFK@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 3 days ago

The chat currently is how you enter commands. But guess what... Mojang has the ability to change that. You know, like they've been changing the game for as long as the game has existed.

You litteraly have no idea how they're going to implement this change. It's stupid to assume that they're going to block the chat window without any other way to run commands. You are clearly experiencing a severe lack of critical thinking skills.

But sure, go ahead and assume the worst
