God damn it, not again...
deletes system32
It says delete a file, not a folder! Unfortunately, this means that deleting system32 doesn't count, so you need to find something else to delete
Hmm. I don't seem to be able to delete anything anymore. I'll reinstall, get the virus again, then delete something else.
That's certainly more complicated than just using UBO...
Cant do that on devices that arent running browsers, or browsers capable of extensions/add-ons. Like games consolesβ¦my xbox would be the only device on my network relying on a VPN for this and other things that my pi-hole cant block.
Skill issue
For devices that can run Android apps, there's SmartTube, free open source Youtube app that has no ads
It isnt true
There is supposedly no ads
But not due to laws preventing it
Some VPNs have adblockers built in. Or you could just install uBlock Origin for free if you don't have a VPN
YouTube is remarkably good at circumnavigating a lot of adblocking, my adblocker blocks ads for pretty much every other app on my phone, except YouTube, so this is a pretty interesting trick, assuming it works. Will definitely be giving this a try.
I've never had a problem with YouTube ad blocking. uBlock Origin + ProtonVPN (NetShield) works just fine for me. I haven't seen a single ad on YouTube since I installed them.
Mhm, I believe ublock does work, but I almost never use YouTube on a desktop browser. PiHole/NordVPN haven't had any success on the iOS app.
You can have firefox+ublock on Android. Idk about iOS though. Since apple is a monopoly and a bitch with browsers.
Reason is because the desktop version of YouTube is (still mostly? I think it's depends on the content) using client side ad serving. On the iOS and Android app, you are getting server side ad serving, meaning the content and ads are coming from the same CDN address. So if you were to block the ad manifest address in Pi-Hole you'd also be blocking the content.
Pi-Hole only really works in a client side served world. Server side it's harder if not impossible to get around. Server side implementations are more expensive to deploy, so that's why it's not as universal.
It's not clear to me exactly how New pipe and Vanced get around it, but I'm assuming it's just a browser wrapper?
Litube works pretty well for me. It's a webview app with adblock, sponsorblock and other QoL stuff.

I go out of my way to avoid using products that are advertised at me. Out of spite.
"as seen on tv? as seen on go fuck yourself"
If they can afford advertising then itβs ripping you off. Doesnβt have to be out of spite.
I have never bought native brand products specifically because the ads were all over the place and obnoxious. It created a negative association with the brand. The ads literally convinced me to do exactly the opposite of what it wanted.
You know what the last ad I cared about was? Cowboys herding cats. No idea what it was for, just a hysterical idea executed with absurd dedication to the bit.
Oh damn, this seems to work. When I'm on my phone I typically use YouTube on Firefox with ublock origin and that works, but I also have the YouTube app which has ads on almost every video. I connected to Albania with NordVPN and watched a few ad-free videos on the YouTube app.
Look into ReVanced for Android or YouTube Plus for iOS. They're nodded clients with built in adblocker and sponsorblock, including more QoL features. I haven't seen and ad in months
ReVanced has been iffy since they got too popular through reddit, but I use grayjay which is FOSS and I really like it. It's still in development but have to support the work they're doing !
Is ReVanced and uBlock are a very secret thing? Why do people look for the VPN alternative, i dont get it.
I don't know shit about networking (I failed you, lemmy) but I wonder if you can install a vpn to your router now. I heard they are are often using linux inside?
Damn, wish I knew this before I've been paying for YouTube premium for, like, since the beginning of when they first started extorting money out of us. I've had an active thriving YouTube account since 2005. I don't exactly remember when I first started paying them money, but I guess they implemented that frogs-slowly-boiling-in-a-pot-of-water tactic. I am a boiling frog.
Albania. Noted.
Nothing is more satisfying than blocking or ignoring ads. Fuck you capitalists!
How does this differ from just using an ad blocker though?
One thing that comes to mind is that if you're on iOS you unfortunately can't really run an adblocker on YouTube (sans running it in browser I guess), but you can easily use a VPN.
Also YouTube periodically tries to break adblocking. 99% of the time uBlock origin works, but this could be a backup if they ever succeed.
Oh and non-Android Smart TVs often don't have ad free YT apps available either. You can run those behind a VPN too.
