Clarke's Third Law:

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

[–] stiffyGlitch@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

further proves my point

I've always loved the Unix wizard poster.

Picture of a poster featuring a wizard-looking type with Unix references on the objects around him

I am one, and it's the closest you can get to being a wizard. You use the in-depth knowledge and tools of your domain to do things the general population often doesn't fully understand and can't do well themselves, if at all.

Sounds like wizards to me.

wow

a real wizard commented on my post!!! I'm starstruck!!!

I'm even the kind in your picture, though he's not seeing anything in that microscope.

It's more like a perspective than a theory

Nah, it's programmers. They write complex spells in esoteric languages to channel the power of lightning to do their bidding.

[–] stiffyGlitch@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

They're sorcerers. Big diff

I like to think of myself as an enchanter, not a wizard.

wizards are more similar to hardware/soc engineers.

No that’s Artificers

I dunno where I heard this but

"Any phenomenon that you cannot comprehend, is indistinguishable from magic."

Imagine trying to explain electricity to a society that has both copper and magnets. You would be a legit wizard if you could make a spark.

Clarke's three laws, referring to Arthur C. Clarke.

The laws are:

  • When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong.
  • The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible.
  • Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

Thank you!

There's actually a very cool philosophical argument that we are actually creating new fundamental rules of the universe by studying them. Simulation theory maybe? Dunno how much stock I put into it, but it's kinda cool to think about.

[–] Deme@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 days ago

That would imply that the phenomena behave differently over time as the rules are refined, wouldn't it?

[–] TargaryenTKE@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

I've believed this ever since I saw my first NileRed video

Wizard and wisdom come from the same root, so yeah. A wizard is just a person that knows more than people around him. The wise person.
